James S

"Earlier protests had erupted into violence on previous weekends - Orthodox Jews throwing rocks at police, or setting rubbish bins alight, even throwing dirty nappies or rotting rubbish at anyone they perceive to be desecrating the Shabbat."

Sounds more like a turf war. So the sable fur hats are really just gang colours?

David

“So the sable fur hats are really just gang colours?”

MY turf! MY rules! Sorry, God’s rules. Ahem.

Anna

When I saw the "drunk on Jehovah's breath" photo I thought they'd caught the Joker.

Gaw

All in Life of Brian, of course.

Karen M

Let me get this straight. Turning on a tape recorder is a desecration of the sabbath because it resembles work. God doesn't like that. But mobbing an innocent woman, hitting her and spitting on her - God's okay with that?

David

“God’s okay with that?”

Maybe it’s some kind of work/pleasure distinction.

JuliaM

"You’d think any deities that exist could take care of themselves, such being the nature of deity. And if these hypothetical beings have egos to bruise and a need for vicarious payback then I fear we’re all in trouble."

Luckily we aren't ancient Greeks. THEIR deities really knew how to hold a grudge!

David Gillies

I dunno, Julia. You might want to check with the Midianites on that one. Or the erstwhile inhabitants of Jericho. Or Egypt's first-born. I'd say when it comes to really no-holds-barred smiting, Zeus can't hold a candle to good old YWVH.

"When I saw the "drunk on Jehovah's breath" photo I thought they'd caught the Joker."

More like Krusty the Clown.

Rich Rostrom

I'd like to subject these clowns to a truly strict "Mosaic Law" regime, under someone else's interpretations - with lots of monitors watching 24/7 for any violation and inflicting public floggings for any lapses.

One irony is that a lot of these people live off the Israeli government, because they're too pious to work or do military service.
