As a regular user of ANSI standards (now replaced by ASME, for my field) and a former drinker of martinis, I'm amazed that I'd never seen that before. Neat.

Just a heads up people. If Trump suddenly turns into frog or his head explodes, at least now you'll know why!

Also, does witchcraft really occur to these people before trying to make a coherent argument?

Spiny Norman

Apparently, Trump's "lies" about Sweden's immigrant problems are the cause of Sweden's immigrant riots. Witchcraft!

So says the 1000-Millimeter Reich.

Ehn, my literal first thought was; Who's strangling the cat?

Well, no, neat would be straight gin or straight vermouth.

And downthread another "Moron" responded, "It's best not to annoy any Finns. They've been known to cut a bitch." Which led to stories recounted of drunken knife fights in small town bars, where once the participants stopped bleeding, they went back in the pub for another drink.

I found the whole conversation hilarious.

And in recent announcements . . .

Awhile back I noted that what could be quite entertaining would be to play totally standard poker, using a tarot deck.

That's an old Stephen Wright joke - "I got a full house and three people died."

The use of tarot decks for divination is fairly recent; they were originally invented for gaming. I've played Tarocchi with my Hanson-Waite tarot in the university student center, much to passersby's chagrin and our amusement.

The French, at least, still commonly play Tarot as a game. I presume other Europeans do too.

We live in a world where this is a headline.

Possibly related.

And feigning chronic victimhood and externalising all responsibility for your life is somehow righteous and empowering.

Translation: YOU ARE HELPLESS. NOTHING IS YOUR FAULT.

David

Translation: YOU ARE HELPLESS. NOTHING IS YOUR FAULT.

That does seem to be the general thrust of these things. “Everything is hopeless” is an odd rallying cry. And given that the forms of “oppression” typically being invoked are, to put it generously, somewhere between negligible and non-existent, it’s hard to see any obviously positive benefit. For the students, I mean. It is, however, easy to imagine the kinds of personalities attracted to such thinking, both as peddlers and consumers.

Anna

Whingeing (and being praised for it) is easier than doing the work.

Ah, that must be some uncanny quantum mechanical version of leftism, whereby acknowledging an obvious and alarming problem is what’s actually causing it to spontaneously occur, even in the past. And conversely, if only people would stop noticing the problem - no-go areas, riots, rising rates of rape and assault, and, in Paris, mobs of savages attempting to burn random people alive - it would somehow go away.

I used to run a scaffolding company in Russia, sort of. Anyway, I got to know a fair bit about scaffolding and what is possible using scaffolding. The answer is "anything". Those examples in the album are good, but I've seen others slung under platforms above the sea which are equally impressive. Don't underestimate good scaffolding, it is as essential to human advancement as soft toilet paper.

I am ashamed to say that I momentarily thought that the Martini one was genuine . . . -sigh- The Cold War relics though look like screen shots from a video game, with a touch of Ozymandias thrown in.

Incidentally, the creation of a glasswork horse features prominently in the Dick Francis book Shattered. Recommended.

A while back in a Friday Ephemera, David posted a video of a laser cleaning rust and paint off pieces of metal. It was awesome and I thought I'd point out why. The regular way to clean a pipe of paint, scale and rust so it can be welded is to use an angle grinder and rapidly swing it back and forth in a 2-3 inch arc. The grinder only contacts a small area of the pipe so you slowly rotate the pipe to clean it all. If the pipe can't be rotated then you have to go around the pipe which can be awkward. Spending an entire day doing it is tedious and usually dirty work so the laser is pretty awesome.

I really love Dick Francis's books, not just because they tend to be cracking yarns, but because they're interesting historical documents; once he decided that he needed settings a bit more varied than just the racing world, he picked areas of endeavour, researched the hell out of them and then wrote protagonists as either experts in them or who got thrust into them. When these areas were more high tech (for the time), he left a fascinating snapshot of the state of the art at the time. Other settings, such as the glassblowing, may still be essentially unchanged...

More witchcraft!

Following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey is attempting to use witchcraft to remove Donald Trump from Presidency.

Trump has the best haters.

Or maybe that should be, to borrow a feminist idiom: "The comments on a Trump presidency demonstrate the need for a Trump presidency."

Elsewhere: Lese-majeste, reinvented. Or perhaps blasphemy. Man says "I've been working like a Hebrew slave". EEOC fines him ten thousand dollars because the Jew hearing it was very offended, stating that the remark was a harassing religious* slur creating a hostile work environment. Because Holocaust.

*According to the EEOC, "Hebrew" is inherently religious.
