Wasn't there something about comic books once?

Seriously, congrats!

Dom

You know, I hate to say this but, I think I've been reading this blog since February 2007. Haven't missed a post. I feel like a dork.

Spiny Norman

Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the varsity swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode.

Congrats, David. It's been a wonderful, strange trip. Here's to ten more!

[ spills drink on the bar ]

Oh, sorry 'bout that...

Gerard Van der Leun

Great great work. Many more years. I read every post. Have done so for years. Friday is one of my favorite linkposts.

Spiny Norman

Tip jar rattled.

Sheesh.

Why yes, I'd like another. *hic* How'd you know... ?

Thanks for the decade. Here's to many more posts and much health and happiness besides.

Cheers!

Congratulations David. One of the best, if not the best read on the Internet and yes I have been reading this blog since 2007.Guys like yourself put the MSM to shame.Tip jar will be hit on payday.Oh, and what happened to the Gorilla? I was rather fond of him.

sH2

So, er, group hug.

Look, just take the damn money. *hits tip jar, runs away*

Novus

Congratulations, David. I don't post here very much but a quick search of my emails reveals that I've been linking friends to your blog since at least January 2008, usually with words like "inimitable" or "indispensable". I too miss the gorilla, although I think as you found your métier he started to seems a bit incongruous.

Jen

Does this make you a silver age blogger?

Have a bottle or two on me.

TimT

Well done! This blog is now one of my regulars. My blog started, unbelievably, in 2004. Still enjoying it!

David

You know, I hate to say this but, I think I’ve been reading this blog since February 2007.

No refunds. Credit note only.

I'm English, so I don't go in for those - what do you call them - "group hugs"? Urgh. I have however tossed a few sovs into the appropriate receptacle. Carry on.

John D

Will it be a manly hug?

Congrats. Hitting Amazon now.

Been coming here since it opened. Best place in town (after the fried chicken shop near the flyover) .

BTW, the toilets have backed up again.

Something to keep the wine cellar stocked. :-)

David

Thanks to all who’ve chipped in so far, or subscribed, or done shopping via the Amazon links. It’s much appreciated.

R. Sherman

Dropped something in the kitty. Might I ask, though, that you change the credit card statement notification to something other than "Lesbian Meter Maids In Bondage." Domestic harmony is important, you know.

Meanwhile, Godfrey. Or this if you prefer.

Not sure how a duplicate comment occurred. I moved to the new "Brave" browser which seems to be OK, without the SJW implications. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Heh.

In other news,

A Buddhist monk has been arrested after a grenade, ammunition and more than four million methamphetamine pills were found in his car and in his monastery.

Par-tay.

R. Sherman

BTW, I searched the archives of my now off-line blog which existed from 2006-2011. There's a reference to you regarding a Cadbury Gorilla advert in 2007. My first substantive post inspired by these pages was in 2008, entitled Ne nos inducas in tentationem. . .
. . . sed libera nos a Malo
which commented on your Cost of Piety post.

Something for the retrospective dinner later.

Killer Marmot

We should all thank the left-wing radicals who have contributed so much to this blog. It could not have been done without them.

More seriously, the American far left appears to be embracing violence in a way we have not seen since the 1960s. Antifa, BAMN, BLM ... these are becoming terrorist organizations.

Which means this blog will have plenty of political material for a while yet, although some of the humour may be missing.

David

More seriously, the American far left appears to be embracing violence in a way we have not seen since the 1960s.

Speaking of which.

Spiny Norman

The "through the looking glass" world of the campus radical. I should be shocked at the stupidity and total lack of self-awareness, but I'm not. Next week, they do something even more infantile.

David

Forget the “leaky barge” thing- I prefer to say “an oasis of sanity”.

Heh. No pressure, then. But I think one of the reasons this place is still here is that the peculiarity of some modish ideas, among supposedly clever people, prompts a look to camera and the question, “Is it me, or is that really as messed-up as it seems?”

Bad News Quillan

Hi David:
*Clunk* [Sound of a tin cup being hit]
I do miss the baboon. What was the story behind it?

Time to re-read "Brain Wave"; we may have just re-entered the Galactic "Slow Zone".

David

I do miss the baboon. What was the story behind it?

This one?

I think it was lifted from an old issue of Fantastic Four, the particulars of which now, sadly, escape me. Ten years and all that.

And here’s a chap making the most of a noisy laundry appliance.

Been lurking and laughing for years, David. Tip jar hit.

Any favourites?

David

Any favourites?

Um, well, I don’t really have favourites as such, but the Reheated series has plenty of things I found entertaining to write, and the end-of-year summaries are fun, for me at least. This post, from 2010, seemed to strike a chord with quite a few people. And this one pretty much wrote itself.

David

This just in:

And yet she wonders why so many people mock her and find her disagreeable.

Sporkatus

There's an implicit dishonesty, there. Several, actually. First, racism is held equivalent to slavery directly (!), thus cannot be held as any kind of lesser sin than the actual imprisonment, rape, and debasement of others; and second, she disallows any claim to not having engaged in any kind of racist acts oneself - enslaving and invading are just things some person called "white people" does. Racism is a mystical miasma, you see, by which oppressive slave/slaver relations are transmitted to people.

To sum up, "slavery (and invasion, but only if committed by white people) produced a lingering racism, which is reflexively equal to slavery in every way, and for which every white person carries a blood guilt even if innocent in every possible way it is possible to be innocent".

Saurie, Lorry, I reject the premises. Wholly, as should anyone.

I'm going to guess the super ape picture is from FF Vol 3 #3.

This cartoon that someone I know posted on Facebook seems to be trying to justify pre-emptive violence. If anyone can explain it to me I'd be most grateful.

Spiny Norman

And yet she wonders why so many people mock her and find her disagreeable.

Ah, it seems the "red pill" has completely worn off.

All this monkey talk and not one Harambe joke. This truly is a classy place. I dropped a few pounds. Pick up a case of Night Train. Party on, Wayne.

This heathen appreciates what you do. Ten more years!

Along with the baboon, I seem to remember a kind of radio dial turning between "Hard" and "Harder", on a device labeled "Blow".

Good times.

Learning To Scream Again: Promoting Leftism for Artists and Writers

Wow. It’s almost in Laurie Penny territory. But apparently the Democrats have moved “so far to the right” that it’s necessary for writers and artists, the “creatives,” to “fight back” against the election of Donald Trump with – wait for it - crisp typography.

It’s strange how these “creatives,” these grown adults, so often sound like teenagers in a student union bar.

Spiny Norman

It’s strange how these “creatives,” these grown adults, so often sound like teenagers in a student union bar.

What's amusing is that these "creatives", our supposed "intellectual betters", have everything exactly reversed.

Oh, and this little "factoid":

...the popular vote was lost to the tune of 3 million plus.

Grandma Clinton won California by almost 4.5 million (how many of those votes were by illegal aliens non-citizens? A million? 3 million? We may never know, because an audit would be rayciss...). Trump won the entire rest of the US by more than a million votes.

'Learning To Scream Again: . . . .

As far as I can figure out, the gist seems to be that for someone who is left wing, possibly extreme left wing, then everyone else, from the conservatives out through the right wing, are off to the right.

Well, yes.

And of course the same applies in reverse; for someone who is right wing, possibly extreme right wing, then everyone else, from the conservatives out through the left wing, are off to the left.

Presumably, any followup essays will note that water tends to be wet, and that sunrise tends to be seen when looking east, and sunset occurs off to the west.

David

It’s a sad day for art.

Can’t help thinking there’s some symbolism there.

JuliaM

Many happy returns! :) And here's to 10 more!

David

Every one of those “editorial” writers is a future resentful Starbucks barista.

Not necessarily. Some of them, a few, may end up in positions of varying influence, as columnists, TV writers, etc.

Thanks for hours of good reading. Consider your tip jar hit.

Blaxploitation movies streaming; women and children hardest hit.

(The service is actually a couple of months old; in doing some searching on the Internet I found that Black-oriented sites like The Urban Daily and Hip Hop Wire actually like the idea.)

David

Saurie, Lorry, I reject the premises. Wholly, as should anyone.

It’s also worth noting that while Laurie imagines herself as heroically and selflessly fighting against “hate,” her own worldview, as illustrated in that tweet and any number of others, is premised on fostering resentment, tribalism and scapegoating. In this case, by encouraging brown-skinned people to believe that “every white person is personally complicit” in some pervasive racial animus that can be construed as explaining almost any failure and dissatisfaction a person might have.

An inch or two further and we arrive at “fuck whiteness” and then, inevitably, “fuck white people.

Hal

Congrats, Mr. Thompson!

I bookmarked your U.S. Amazon link and I'll do my best to feed my evil consumerism and sate my obscene desire for material goods in the coming year. Gaia be damned!

Keep up the good work. We're entering an era of peak liberal lunacy. Yet even more comedy gold lies ahead.

David

I’m sure that if you concentrate you’ll realise that there’s a long list of very expensive things you suddenly need.

Jonathan

Congratulations on 10 years David. Much pleasure, hilarity, disbelief and even anger has been experienced.

So, er, group hug.

Happy to buy you a drink.

David

I sent my son a couple of links to this blog to help him cope with life at university and now he’s a regular reader. :-)

I believe that makes you a “based mom.” Or a person of interest for social services. Could go either way, depending who you ask.

And again, thanks to all for the support. I shall endeavour to keep on trucking.

Excellent blog....bravo Monsieur !!

And, ten years on, the Guardian remains very much the same. Here they let us know that Johnny Depp spends his own money - that he has earned himself - on things that make him happy, such as guitars and even - wait for it - expensive wine. Because of this we must all now disdain Mr Depp.

On a slightly different tack: alleged 'comedian' Sarah Silverman gets it very wrong, with hilarious results!

Sporkatus

The whole thing was, ironically enough fueled by the swastika hoax culture. She, seeing a poorly drawn swastika (or so she thought) automatically chalked it up to another "h8r" with a lack of literacy. Except... not only did her rarified sense of better-ness (all who disagree with me are plainly fools, and thus would a Nazi be) get the better of her, but she fails utterly to recognize the origin of bad swastikas in general.

Hint: not the actual neonazis.

The fact that she crowned her idiocy by displaying ignorance of regular people's ways and the working man is icing on the cake, really.

Professing herself to be wise, etc. Pride goeth and so forth.

Microbillionaire

At this rate I shouldn't be surprised if the letter "K" eventually gets mistaken for a bad swastika.

That dial going from blow to blow harder was about the first thing I saw on this blog. So that's how long I've been hanging round this dubious neighbourhood.

Hal

That dial going from blow to blow harder was about the first thing I saw on this blog.

Likewise.

Captain Nemo

Congratulations on ten years. A question, if I may - when did you remove that dial from the site? I definitely remember it being here when I first started reading, but I didn't realise you'd removed it. Also, I will be monetarising my fondness for this establishment when my dividend from a recent business venture comes through. You should find a little something in the kitty by the weekend. Slainte.

David

A question, if I may - when did you remove that dial from the site?

Um, can’t recall. A couple of years ago, maybe more?
