Er, how is it homophobic?

David

Er, how is it homophobic?

I’m not sure. The ‘worst’ construal I can think of is that the stick figures may symbolise a support for traditional, heterosexual marriage. But even if that’s the case, that doesn’t necessarily indicate anything approaching homophobia. And we’re still left with the conceit that stealing things from someone else’s car – a someone else who has presumably given you a lift – is somehow not only righteous but something to boast about on Twitter.

Novus

Er, isn't Led Zeppelin a bit, you know, heteronormative for our heroine hero herze? All that patriarchal stuff about coolin' and lemon squeezing and Valhalla and workin' from seven to eleven every night just to buy her rings pearls and all?

Jacob

What's with the tattoo?

Sam

Also symbolic- she's now deleted her Twitter account.

Joan

Is she assuming xir genders? Hater!

abacab

Isn't what she did there rather...erm... heterophobic and based on unfounded presumptions?

ACTOldFart

And so the boundary between social justice warrior-dom and paranoia becomes ever more blurred ... (cue the 'deedle-deedle' music from "Twilight Zone")

Rafi

Has anyone told her about Pioneer 10?

Tom
Has anyone told her about Pioneer 10?

Well, now that's just completely problematic.

R. Sherman

Make no mistake. People are not born this twisted and broken. She learned that somewhere.

David

For some reason, I was reminded of this video, in which a rather unhinged feminist takes umbrage with the snow plough markers in a car park as being “a declaration of male dominance.” It seems to be the logical end-point, as it were, of that kind of cultivated hair-trigger outrage.

David Davis

Oh, er did you people know that Newton's Principia Mathematica is classed now as a Rape Manual? There are dissertations about it.

Uma Thurmond's Feet

And she has the courage of her convictions by deleting her account. What courage.

David

Oh, er did you people know that Newton’s Principia Mathematica is classed now as a Rape Manual?

I’m pretty sure we marvelled at the “scholarly” outpourings of Sandra Harding some time ago.

Lisboeta

She learned that somewhere

My first thought was a Gender Studies/Humanities degree course. Rapidly followed by the thought that everything we know/believe was learned somewhere. Otherwise our development would've been arrested at babyhood: lying on the floor, wailing, kicking and hand-waving. Ah. I think I see a flaw in my analysis.

bilbaoboy

So if I declare my love of Imperial (a very good Rioja: http://www.cvne.com/tp-bodega/imperial/) I am somehow dissing breweries???

This girl/woman is wasting someone's space.

Incidentally, it could have been a sign off a gender-neutral toilet, couldn't it? :-)

Tom

The figures are holding hands which isn't exactly standard toilet signage. Perhaps it was a tandem toilet?

<shudder>

Jacob,

What's with the tattoo?

Isn't that supposed to be some kind of "white power" symbol now?

WTP

Er, isn't Led Zeppelin a bit...mudshark in the hoo-ha? 14 year old sex slave patriarchy, much? But hey, bumper sticker hurtz my feelz.

Tattoo looks like a hand sign for the deaf for the letter "F".

The original Mr. X

"Homophobic"? For all "Queen Ween" knows, the person in a dress was actually an assigned-male-at-birth individual who wears a dress to protest against heteronormativity and explore xir sexuality. I demand that "Queen Ween" publically apologise for this enormous microaggression xe's committed.

Novus

Mudshark in the hoo-ha

I believe it was a red snapper.

Point taken, though.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Perhaps it was a tandem toilet? (shudder)

I am guessing you never got the dubious pleasure of experiencing a latrine in a never updated WWII "Temporary" building - tandem would be an improvement.

I believe, David, that the magnet is a play on the blue square with yellow "equals" sign promoted by the "Human Rights Campaign" in the US for gay marriage legalization. Said HRC being an extremely suspect bunch, even if one agreed broadly with their aims. It's as much as anything a badge of incuriosity as virtue signaling to have one on one's car.

So, of course, any form of dissent Will Not Be Tolerated.

David

So, of course, any form of dissent Will Not Be Tolerated.

Yes, that was the most ‘provocative’ thing I could come up with as a supposed excuse – that it was a reaction to same-sex marriage legislation. Still, it’s good to know that whenever I’m in a car or taxi and I see something I don’t agree with, it’s perfectly okay for me to steal it, or deface it, or maybe just bludgeon the driver insensible.

Sporkatus
whenever I’m in a car or taxi and I see something I don’t agree with
Seen day before yesterday at the local Unitarians' hall outside sign (for upcoming speech/etc.): The Artist as Nonconformist.

So yes, a quasi-religious musing on how important artists are because they're so terribly unique and Sticking It To The Man all the time. Not a bumper sticker, and not an *excuse* for bludgeoning, perhaps, but such stupidity really ought to be painful.

David

and not an *excuse* for bludgeoning, perhaps,

Heh. Ooh, I dunno.

Spiny Norman

Or relentlessly scold the driver over his "insensitivity" for having a hula doll on the dashboard.

Xas7wcrg9e

"Isn't that supposed to be some kind of "white power" symbol now?"

If you squint slightly^W a lot, and tilt your head a bit.

David

Ah yes, good times.

Spiny Norman

I must be old. When I see that, I think "Okay". I had no idea that when Donald Trump holds up that sign, he's making sooper-sekrit signals to the neo-Nazi, Aryan Nation types...

(Although, since the fingers on the ever-so-brave, Twitter-account-deleting SJW's tat are held together, I suspect WTP's comment about the sign language letter "F" may be what it's supposed to be. Whatever that is supposed to mean...)

Wouldn't surprise me to learn that the sign for 'U' is on the other.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Not in the mid-East where it will likely get you into a fight if you flash it innocently at a local as you have just called the person an arschloch (he said in German so as not to offend any English speaking naughty word filters).

@Sporkatus has the gist of it. Just a few years ago the "yellow equal sign inside a blue square" bumper sticker was made a thing. Rather low key and it took me a little time to figure out what it meant. Quite the thing in California. I'm not sure how visible the whole Prop 8 "stop the H8" campaign was to outsiders.

From there it's easy to see how someone could take any traditionalist slant on that format as a metaphorical poke in the eye. Of course a metaphor doesn't steal property or perpetrate violence.

The key that puts it together is the "crime fighting" caption. Gay marriage is legal now so it must be a crime to advocate actual marriage in a way that rubs their noses in it. At the very least it is hate speech, which we all know is illegal thanks to Howard Dean. Plus it hurt her in the feelz and how dare anyone demean her lived experience.

Typing this shit, I realize how easy it is to regurgitate in a coherent fashion. It seems earning a degree would be ridiculously easy, if I weren't first drummed out for engaging in logical discussions to make sense of it. Or for being cis/het/white/showered.

NickM

About 20 years ago I saw a truck in Atlanta, GA with a bumper sticker which read...

This Country Was Built By White Men With Guns

Jus' sayin'.

Dennis

I used to see that equal sign symbol and wonder at the number of naval lieutenants in our landlocked area. I am certainly getting too old.
