Ooh. It’s like John Noble was in the room.

Good heavens, David, I wasn't asking for anything THAT scary.

We must “attack masculinity directly,” says this educator of the young.

Toxic academia.

David

Toxic academia.

Heh. That.

It does rather add weight to the impression that academia’s Clown Quarter is home to an unusually high concentration of mad, unhappy women. Also, dogmatism, narcissism and malevolence generally.

Rob

Many of western society's problems could be solved by rounding up every sociologist in a large net, flying it over the North Atlantic ocean, and dropping it in the sea.

Rob

Jessie Daniels is, of course, very, very white indeed.

David

Mark Kermode has some Hallowe’en film trivia.

MC

I'm unclear whether white families are bad just because of their whiteness or if their er... familyness is also a problem. Are black nuclear families OK? Or is the family a white concept forced upon American POC? Of course trying to understand malicious idiocy doesn't get one very far...

I have mentioned this before but the ravings of the bedlamites are tediously parochial. If you were to present a list of the things that the malicious mentals consider aspects of 'whiteness' or 'white bourgeois values' to an Indian, Japanese or Chinese* person they would agree that all of them were their values too. They would be most surprised and not a little put out to be told that valuing hard work and education are 'white' things.

“Facts?! Facts?! Don’t tell me about facts!” one person screamed.

They aren't students. They're true believers.

David

They aren’t students. They’re true believers.

They do seem gripped by a practised incuriosity, having somehow short-circuited the usual, often time-consuming process of learning. And remember, it’s not an entirely unheard-of response.

R. Sherman

I'm unclear whether white families are bad just because of their whiteness or if their er... familyness is also a problem.

It's probably a combination of both. If we remember two fundamental characteristics of the Leftist realty, i.e. all human interaction is zero-sum and those on the "advantaged" side of the spectrum are there because of some sort of "oppression" perpetrated on those beneath them, we see the problem.

As much as the Left tries to hide the stats, it's clear that an intact, traditional nuclear family is less likely to be impoverished than a single parent household. Whether traditional family structures cause the success of their members or are indicative of personality traits which lead to success is irrelevant. There's still a correlation. Sadly, since LBJ's Great Society took off, the intact, traditional Black family has almost become extinct. Thus, for the Leftist, the zero-sum nature of the world combined with the "systemic oppression" du jour, necessitates denouncing both the nuclear family and those demographics in which they are prevalent, which then is denominated "white supremacy." To think otherwise would require blaming counterproductive behaviors and advocating personal agency and responsibility which the Leftist cannot do.

David

I’m unclear whether white families are bad just because of their whiteness or if their er... familyness is also a problem.

Somewhat related.

David

Also, this.

R. Sherman

Regarding the current madness afflicting universities where facts and truth no longer matter if they conflict with the orthodoxy, it's hard to see how the present system can continue to survive, where the fact-based disciplines are forced to coexist with those areas of "study" which have been taken over by SJW types. At some point, the liberal arts and the soft sciences, i.e. sociology, anthropology, psychology, and of course literature & philosophy, etc. will have to separate themselves and become leftist "seminaries." Alternatively, the STEM fields and related matters will have to go before they're completely destroyed by the progressive zombie hordes. It's reminiscent of the separation of theology departments from universities which occurred post-Enlightenment.

Wait wait - I am SO confused!

If we are to “call masculinity out as a hazardous ideology and denounce anyone who chooses to identify with it,” as the bedlamite perfessor claims, what if I as a fully functioning XX human decide that I am actually a male? Do I have to try to act stereotypically female while taking testosterone, growing my beard, etc? Isn't that putting undue strain on those in the Trans- community?? What if I want to identify as a masculine male??

The mind boggles.

What's really scary is that those of us who just wish to live and let live are being forced to care.

“Facts?! Facts?! Don’t tell me about facts!” one person screamed."

I've seen that before. I've been talking about gun control to Liberals since Kim Campbell was Justice Minister. They do not care what the facts are. They live in a different universe than we do. In their world, how you feeeeel about the subject is what's important. Guns make them uncomfortable, therefore no one should have a gun.

But when -they- feeeel like they might need a gun, that's different.

http://phantomsoapbox.blogspot.ca/2017/10/more-leftist-idiots-discover-self.html

Barack Obama may be credited for arming the Right in the USA, but Trump has to get the credit for arming the Left. You'll notice gun sales are WAY down this year, indicating there aren't very many Lefty losers feeling all threatened and stuff.

That means they're very outnumbered. >:D

I recall a day as a graduate student, when a British arrival said to me during intervals between cigarette (fag) puffs, "We need to get pissed." I, being a naive rural Missouri boy, thought, "Why would I want to get deliberately angry?"

Those were the days.

Months later, I erupted, "It's not fucking tin!. It's a can, dammit!"

“The problem is not toxic masculinity; it’s that masculinity is toxic,” adding that masculinity is “simply not compatible with liberty and justice for all.”

In the name of "liberty and justice", she means to destroy the inborn essential nature of one whole sex, half the population. The half which invented the modern world of comfort and plenty which affords her the liberty and leisure to pursue a career as a tenured lunatic.

Equal rights for women was a mistake, I'll tell the world.

Remember: this is the domain of super-jargon, of Humpty Dumpty semantics. 'Masculine' is here not just the adjective pertaining to being male; it means specifically the bits about being male that I don't like.

This is why you get articles pointing out that 'there is no non-toxic masculinity'; well, of course there isn't, as you've redefined 'masculinity' to mean all and only what you think is toxic.

Also, you wouldn't decide that you are 'a male'. You'd decide that you are 'a man'. 'Male' pertains to biological sex, which doesn't exist for human beings: what exists for human beings instead is gender, and 'man' is a gender. What is a man? Well, in ordinary English, a man is an adult male human; but in this discourse, a man is 'anyone who identifies as a man'. Gender is thus decoupled from sex, very much like grammatical gender in, say, French. A man is no more a male than la table is female.

Seriously, you can't make any sense of this sort of stuff if you go in expecting words to have their ordinary meanings. It's basically all code, deliberately meant to be impenetrable to outsiders: it's how you know that you're talking to someone in the in-group, that they can command the jargon, and it's how you establish ranking within the group, as new entrants are schooled by their superiors in the entry-level jargon and then, after they can use it fluently, they induct others in their turn. Inventing new jargon, and teaching it, is how status is obtained.

Lab Rat

Seriously, you can't make any sense of this sort of stuff if you go in expecting words to have their ordinary meanings.

As a scientist that goes against my training and makes my head hurt. All this crap does. And the Bedlamites are now invading the STEM disciplines. Not with actual degrees in any STEM discipline, mostly, but degrees with a STEM discipline name followed by "Education" or "Studies" or some other watered down bullshit. ARGH!

I’m now hoping that no trick-or-treating children materialise. There’s a large bar of Dairy Milk stashed in a cupboard, but now that I’ve discovered it I don’t want to part with it. Bizarrely-costumed children will be happy to get fruit, won’t they? Or a nice healthy sandwich?

Adam

Sam

When I hear a new phrase I try my very best to figure it out in context rather than look it up. If my ignorance persists I still prefer to ask people rather than head to the goolag. So...

What does "taking the piss" mean? Best I can figure it's "slacking off" or "joking around" but I've seen it used in too many contexts to nail it down. No other blog's comment section is worthy of the...er... "honor" in Limeysplaining this to a hapless Texan.

David

What does “taking the piss” mean?

To take liberties with someone or to exploit them in an unfair or unreasonable way. (E.g., “Have you seen the price of bottled water in here? They’re taking the piss.”) But taking the piss out of someone generally means to mock them. It can be used to describe affectionate teasing too.

Sam

Ah, there IS a variation that changes the meaning. I feel at least 1% less stupid now. Thank you sir.

David

Thank you sir.

You’re welcome. If someone is always late, or never buys a round of drinks, or is slacking off at work, they could be said to be taking the piss.

Officers Dress For Dinner

. . . I decided to look that one up. Somehow I'm sure David's got it on the jukebox.

That and I'm nominating it to the list of band names, where I've now discovered that such names as Arsedestroyer, The Deep Freeze Mice , and World Domination Enterprises are already taken, or at some point, have been.

Randy, I think it involves drastic surgery and a new wardrobe.

David

Well, attempting to disentangle the stated arguments, or what pass for arguments in such circles, is a thankless task. There are too many contradictions, double standards, begged questions and outright dishonesties. Too many facts you mustn’t know and things you mustn’t think about, at least not realistically. It’s just rhetorical wreckage. And so you have to consider the kind of psychology in play.

And that psychology is usually, almost always, broken and vindictive. These are damaged, unhappy people who wish to damage you.

[ Added: ]

The psychology in play is always something to consider, especially if the stated motives and rationalisations are absurd, unconvincing or bizarrely improbable. If, for instance, someone tells you that they want to fight racism because racism sickens them, and then their chosen course of action is to harass and threaten people, randomly and gratuitously, to humiliate and degrade them, based solely on their race, because they can do this with impunity, then those actions tell you most of what you need to know. The rest is an excuse, a pretext.

And if someone claims to be against oppression and injustice and then you see them delighting in the trapping and frustration of a random disabled woman, about whom they know nothing, while laughing at her distress, then, again, only a fool would assume that their motives are benign.

And there are over a hundred other examples in the archives.

Ten

Apparently, the stable family structure is a “fact to be lamented,” and stable white families should be discouraged from existing.

What, progressivism's last half century and its intractable, 2-earner socialist servitude via public institutions never happened?

These people need to give themselves more credit. If that's possible.

Lab Rat

Ratty. You're not a Mongrel rat are you?

Well, mongrel only in the super EEEEvil multi-European ancestry sense.

Which to SJWs is probably scarier than any follower of the Rat King :P

Chester Draws

Sorry for the interlude everyone. I knew a guy who went by the moniker "Lab Rat" who was also a Mongrel. Obviously someone else.

Andrew Stuttaford on the dumb, twisted fantasies of Laurie Penny’s friend and fellow traveller Paul Mason:

Then we turn to the admiration that Mason feels for the [communist] revolution (he describes it as “a beacon to the rest of humanity, no matter how short lived”) at least until its ‘degeneration’ “in the early 1920s”, an admiration apparently undisturbed by the fact that Lenin and his accomplices always had mass murder in mind.

Apparently, little details like Grigory Zinoviev’s belief that 10% of his fellow countrymen – around ten million people – would have to be “annihilated” for the good of communism isn’t enough to impede Mr Mason’s gushing.

R. Sherman

Well, true communism has not be tried. True communism is always just a few more corpses of kulaks, wreckers, hoarders, and splitters shy of actually being successful.

David

If only the damn bourgeoisie – thee, me and probably everyone we know – would just lay down and die. Then… utopia!

https://everydayfeminism.com/2017/10/what-is-cultural-dysphoria/

Gee. If I wanted to hang with a group of Korean speakers, and I didn't speak Korean, I might...well...maybe ask if one or all of them would be willing to help me learn Korean?

No. That's crazy. Better by far to get on the Internet and blame the world.

Farnsworth M. Muldoon

Still more stuff to worry about:

My mom hates my body hair, and that hatred is worsened when I’m wearing a cultural symbol like the bindi. It exposes my South Asian identity at the same time as it does my queerness.

I see, the bindi exposes your "queerness". I imagine that will come as a rude shock to the millions of ladies sporting it on the Asian sub-continent, and to Buddha his own bad self who who is often depicted with one.

“Facts?! Facts?! Don’t tell me about facts!”

R. Sherman

...to Buddha his own bad self...

"Bad Buddha" has the ring of a Bollywood comedy romp. . .or a band name. "Buddha's Bindi" also sounds like one of those bands you'd hear at some crap bar out in the middle of the Golden Triangle, while you're undercover for the CIA trying to orchestrate a mercenary overthrow of the Pathet Lao or something.

David

Still more stuff to worry about:

Ayesha Sharma is a non-binary South Asian scholar and artist continually negotiating a relationship with themselves and their communities through practices of decolonization.

[W]e can only give masculinity so many modifiers [such as 'toxic] for so long before we have to confront the possibility that it is masculinity itself that has become the problem.... we need to call masculinity out as a hazardous ideology and denounce anyone who chooses to identify with it.

You know, it's an interesting sign of the times we live in that your response could (and quite possibly will) be held out as 'incontrovertible proof' of your sexism and racism (probably mine too for that matter, by association if nothing else).

Interesting, because it sometimes seems that it's simply not enough to be indignant in the face of prejudice and stand in opposition to it, but that one's indignation is only acceptable when channeled in certain directions and expressed using certain prescribed ways.

Otherwise you are - somehow - said to be guilty of the very thing you are criticising.

And such people express surprise when others find such scolding objectionable.

I am not sure that is entirely accurate so much as it is that the types featured in these pages are concentrated in certain areas in the west and given megaphones so that it seems like they are in the wire everywhere.

R. Sherman

@Farnsworth

There's something to be said for the proposition that those like Ms. Sharma garner a disproportionate amount of the attention. The problem though isn't so much those like her. The problem is those in power in government and education who quietly churn out the Sharmas of the world in every-increasing numbers. For every idiotic professor who makes the news on these pages, there are probably 50 more out there doing the same stuff without scrutiny. That's what's scary.

I am still waiting for the MSM to discover the concept of Kafkatrapping. What are the odds that when they finally do it'll be misinterpreted intentionally (see HRC's 'understanding' of 1984) or characterized as something that is being done to Progs by The Deplorables?

Perhaps, but they are still going to be concentrated in small areas in the west. You would be hard pressed to find this ilk in Mindanao, Mali, or even Mississippi outside of maybe Oxford. If you look at the list of cities for the November 4th "protests"*, the only surprise on the list is Omaha (but then they have the university), everyplace else is a certified leftist safe space.

To borrow a phrase from the sitcom Scrubs, "bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling". The only reason Hanlon's razor tends to generally hold in society is that engaging in outright and forceful bastardry tends to be a lot of work, and the human race is a lazy one in the mean.

The only conversion possible for those who, unlike your example, are not Better Men by faith or habit, is to point out that non-bastardy laziness can often be more optimal than the bastardy sort, and even lazier.

Ayup. Noting stuff bubbling up in the news feeds of the world, I don't always make up punchlines, sometimes all one needs are the headlines . . .

After first running across Trump and Kobach’s Voter Fraud Lies Are Making More Voters Lose Confidence in Our Elections, Says New Poll I did note that certain sources can get declared suspect, so cross referencing and verifying is a rather good idea, and the same story kept coming up.

And then one finds Rick Perry: Fossil Fuels Can Prevent Sexual Assault in Africa, also with quite concurring echoes elsewhere.

I've been noticing that in my local stores, the Xmas decoration Stuff was already out well before Halloween, which is well before---for the US---Thanksgiving . . . Apparently the first of April has been moved to sometime in autumn . . .

Oy.
