She also hates middle america and brags that she only hires "native American speakers."

As so often with these displays, I had to check that it wasn’t some on-the-nose parody, but it’s quite sincere, and consonant with the lady’s broader worldview. Ms Byerley, who seems oblivious to what her tweets convey to the rest of us, is fond of the word “diversity,” the implications of which can perhaps be divined from the attitude above.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Melinda Byerley, the founder of TimeShare CMO, wrote an offensive tweet on Saturday, calling people in "middle america" [sic] stupid and saying that's why there are not as many jobs there. Please read it for yourself:

I didn't feel like tweetstorming, so here's a screen shot. "What middle America can do to get more jobs in their area."

I'm guessing Don't Be California was not among her recommendations.

David

I post so many of these things that I sometimes get blasé, and then once in a while I’m struck by the eerie uniformity of the affectation. And in keeping with so many of her equally woke peers, Ms Byerley has been busy blocking vast swathes of Twitter, including people she’s never interacted with, in order to silence any deviation from her pieties.

R. Sherman

It has been noted before the similarities between the current SJW project and religious orthodoxy. It seems for Ms. Byerley, only Caucasians suffer from "total depravity" in the form of melanin deficiency. It is for her (and others like her) the Original Sin. Query, does she believe her "salvation" is a result of the "irresistible grace" afforded the "elect" like her, or is such grace "prevenient" and available to all of us if we can just see the light? When, then, is the altar call?

Pat

Her "blocking" policy is why she is so sure in her opinions -- she doesn't allow other thought to enter her safe space.

R. Sherman

That is about what I would expect from some racist xenophobic lesbianophobic hick from the Midwest who thinks a velvet Elvis is the epitome of fine art and can't understand the nuances of her art that shows she is at once part of the American land, and the viewer’s eye, and apart from them: in her own words, both present and persistently unseen.

At least unseen from the next county, besides, it is not as if I didn't warn you.

Sounds like... a dark approach to Twitter use.

She’s veering at great speed towards Gorillas in the Mist territory. Which, in so many ways, is not an ideal destination.

Sporkatus

Also, doesn't leaning heavily on "Black Twitter" offer a heavily sanitized and condensed form of the Black Internet Experience? Hie thee to WorldStar, wench. Go big or go home.

Sporkatus

If she starts wrestling at any point we'll know she's gone full Steve Irwin. Not better as an approach to blacks-as-exotic-wildlife, but at least funnier.

Darleen

I'm guessing Don't Be California was not among her recommendations.

Born, raised & living in SoCal. Same with hubby.

We will be leaving in 4-5 years, if not sooner.

Cali has one third of the nation's welfare recipients, bouncing near the bottom for our school systems, our crime rate has gone up because of our criminal coddling betters in Sacramento and our cost of living is about 36% higher than most other states.

And the homeless?

So why are so many business headquarters here? For the upper management, those with salaries in the high 6 figures, it is guarded, beautiful neighborhoods with beautiful weather and a chance to stumble across celebrities when dining or shopping.

We are a feudal state.

R. Sherman

That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me. I feel so...so validated.

Joan, what the heck is that photo???

Joan

Game of Thrones. :-)

R. Sherman

BTW, Farnsworth, I cannot recommend a trip to Graceland in Memphis highly enough. Forget the the house, simply spending two hours watch the supplicants at Elvis's grave is worth the price of admission. From personal experience, however, a note of caution: Try not to display any lack of reverence for the experience. It's great training for developing the necessary lack of emotional display if you ever want to enter a high stakes Texas Hold 'Em tournament.

R. Sherman

I think it was the Charley Pride impersonator which put it over the top.

For we Sons of the South that is not unlike the hajj, however, I also had the great distinction of having dined in the Elvis Presley mess hall at Ray Barracks where the lovely fraulein of Freidberg maintain a memorial to him.

I went to #blackTwitter. It's a cesspit of victimhood, sneering and often vicious anti-white racism and juvenile gifs. This is what we're supposed to "observe, like and share"?
No Thanks

R. Sherman

...where the lovely fraulein of Freidberg maintain a memorial to him.

There were a lot of German faithful at Graceland when we visited. Additionally, there were quite a few flower arrangements from Germany at the Graveside. My wife and I developed a game: "European or Jackson, Mississippi?"

After we left, my wife--the very continental, European sophisticate--who was not enthused about my cultural diversion from our trip noted, "Well, that didn't totally suck."

'Merica, dammit.

I lean toward replacing "observe, like, and share" with "point and laugh," though that may be due to my entire experience with Twitter being limited to here and the occasional Twitchy clickbait. I suppose it's possible there's worthwhile stuff on that platform somewhere. Maybe.

Spiny Norman

This could muddy the waters a bit.

Brown University is implementing a change to its graduate school application that will allow applicants to “self-identify” as persons of color.

Probably white administrators coming up with this stuff.

And in recent years, several all-women’s colleges have permitted men who identify as women to apply. Some sororities have followed suit.

Damnit, why hadn't they thought of that 40 or so years earlier ?

Squires

David, what a coincidence! Just last week I was going to suggest "zookeepers" as a fitting term for the hierarchs of the egalitarian pecking-order establishment. Ungood minds think alike, as they say.

David

The Twitter thread is hilarious.

It’s all getting rather surreal. (“That goat is stylish, is it yours?”) But it does add to the mountain of evidence that when people ostentatiously signal their wokeness, credulity and obliviousness are likely to follow. And the obliviousness isn’t some random aberration; it’s oddly uniform. And it’s uniform because it’s been taught, either formally or in terms of peer-group cues.

David

If only she could reach out and touch their hair.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

...credulity and obliviousness are likely to follow...

You left out condescension as thick as Mississippi delta mud.

Melinda Byerley @MJB_SF

Just let it wash over you. There will be things that confuse you. Be at peace with it. You don’t have to be the audience for everything. Over time you see themes emerging. It’s then you start to grow.

One day we can only hope to be half as Woke™ as she is, and she is truly a saint for deigning even to try to spread her Wokeness™ to we trogloditian mortals.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Meanwhile, back at our favorite Canadian university, the WLU Rainbow Center makes demands. Among them are:

1. Issue a public statement naming that transphobia is a problem at our institution that is impacting trans, non-binary, and gender diverse students, staff, and faculty...

3. Immediately implement safety measures that have already been requested by the Rainbow Centre, including the installation of a panic button and reinforced windows in all DEO centres and offices...

6. Hire a trans person of colour as a full-time counsellor within the Diversity & Equity Office to provide mental health supports to individuals who are being impacted by our campus climate...

8. Hire a trans faculty member to serve as a Canadian Research Chair on transphobia in post-secondary educational institutions...

Whole list here. [Link goes to Facespace for those who prefer to avoid Zukerberg's soul destroying mess]

I am a bit surprised for number three they didn't want full body armor and an MRAP to get to classes, seeing as how WLU is literally Mogadishu for the "trans, non-binary, and gender diverse" students

David

the WLU Rainbow Center makes demands.

I’m still processing the idea that someone sufficiently hysterical and dishonest to meet the expected standards of wokeness would be in a position to dish out “mental health supports.”

Farnsworth M Muldoon

I’m still processing the idea that someone sufficiently hysterical and dishonest to meet the expected standards of wokeness would be in a position to dish out “mental health supports.”

Speaking of dishonesty, or at least self-delusion, I don't think there are enough genuine "trans" people in Canada to fill all the billets for which they demand a "trans" person.

Atempdog

But are you woke enough to recognize that the 'homonormative whiteness' of LGBTQ Centers? I guess the LGBTQ centers are too gay. (And too white, of course, but that sort of goes without saying.)

R. Sherman

'homonormative whiteness' of LGBTQ Centers

I fear we are approaching critical mass of absurdity. Yet again, we find that the victim group du jour's distress is not predicated on any overt act of exclusion or discrimination, but upon the group's own internal emotional hang-ups. Thus a gymnasium open to all becomes a problem because it supports fitness thereby marginalizing the less-fit. Where they get the idea that the universe owes them a reality which caters to their emotional well-being at all times is not clear to me.

David

Yet again, we find that the victim group du jour’s distress is not predicated on any overt act of exclusion or discrimination, but upon the group’s own internal emotional hang-ups.

And is therefore insatiable. There’s no way to please the compulsively, competitively, neurotically indignant, and any effort to appease such creatures is likely to encourage further scolding and demands. As illustrated, for instance, here and here.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Thus a gymnasium open to all becomes a problem because it supports fitness thereby marginalizing the less-fit.

Regarding the gym,

The school gym can also marginalize LGBTQ students, Pryor discovered, saying that although the school gym is open to all students, it is not “not particularly accessible” for gay students because of the “pressure to be fit” and the “expectations of manliness.”

Let us pass over for a moment the fundamental absurdity of someone crying and blowing snot because he is troubled by the fact that a gym is a place to get fit, this guy seems to be pushing the stereotype that all gays should be delicate and effeminate, which, we discovered lately, is not an ideal.

This, however, raises idiocy to an art form.

After interviewing eight LGBTQ students, Pryor learned that Greek Life was a source of particular consternation, noting that the presence of Greek Life flags in the student center and the proximity of Greek houses to campus made some students especially uncomfortable.

One student, Jackson—identified as a queer, black, trans man—pointed out to Pryor the strong presence of Greek Life flags hung in the school’s student center.

“By featuring these organizations in such a visible way, the campus is communicating the importance of fraternity and sorority membership,” Pryor lamented. “What would it mean for the campus to hang all the LGBTQ pride flags in that space? Questions likely not considered in such a heterogendered environment.”

According to the UMKC website, only 6% of their students live in frats or sororities, so Jackson is FOS (to no one's surprise) if he is taking the vapors because campus organizations hang their banners in the student center, and personally I am shocked that a frat or soroity would dare locate close to campus, that is unheard of. If they had any decency they'd be in Raytown.

Wait till Jackson finds out there is ROTC on campus.

Oh well, it is UMKC, after all.

PiperPaul

"If only she could reach out and touch their hair."

[Whispering] "They're absolutely fascinating in their natural environment. Shhhh! Careful, don't let them notice us or they might scatter and ruin this anthropological expedition."

'Hey now, show us on the doll where the white patriarchy touched you.'

Tim Newman

The school gym can also marginalize LGBTQ students, Pryor discovered, saying that although the school gym is open to all students, it is not “not particularly accessible” for gay students

He ought to try the CMG gym in Paris I go to. Sometimes I think I’m the only straight man in there.

MC

@Tim N - I used to be a member of the YMCA gym in London. Same story.

Didn't notice any of the gays having a problem with 'manliness' either. Many of the lads there, if they were any more masculine they'd have to go and live up a tree.

Alex deWinter

Why in all the hells is 'support' pluralized? Is it some Brit/Canadian thing like 'maths' or yet another sample of the socjus fetish for loading down perfectly viable words with superfluous letters?

W Krebs

I spent some time in gyms while losing the 60 lbs. Everybody I had occasion to talk to was friendly. Some exercises require concentration or you'll hurt yourself. Maybe the complainant du jour mistook concentration for unfriendliness?

He could also try the martial arts. Martial artists and target shooters are the two friendliest groups on the planet, although the shooters like to talk about technical gun stuff, foot-pounds and trajectories and whatnot.

Surrep, I prefer to think of it as we Americans choosing to abbreviate exactly what and as much as we like without irrational constraint. Abbreviating "mathematics" and/or "mathematical study" as "math" I'd call mere recognition that nobody in their right mind would ever say "a mathematic", a simpler reason for never recognizing the plural. It's a plural noun behaving much as a singular collective noun, and deserves to be treated as such.

The Tapestry explicitly identifies them as FRANCI.

I've read an interesting article which argues that King Harold is actually two men over to the right, and that the one who appears to be struck with an arrow in the eye is actually holding a spear. The text is emended to "IN TERRA IACTUS EST" instead of "INTERFECTUS EST".
18th century engravings of the tapestry show that this section has undergone considerable reconstruction. The arrow in the eye may be one such, matching an account in Malmesbury, iirc.
