Dr Lewis writes inexplicably neglected erotic literature.

Here is the story of Leda, a talented graduate student in poetics at UCLA who gets herself tangled in a web of cultic magic, monsters, and conspiracies. Through her harrowing tale, Leda is abducted and fed to a legendary monster living in the abandoned railcar lines under Los Angeles

He writes porn about a grad student being abducted. Is that woke now?

David

He writes porn about a grad student being abducted. Is that woke now?

It doesn’t sound terribly right-on, no. To say nothing of the vaguely strangle-porn cover. But on the other hand, he does denounce whiteness and maleness, and blathers dutifully about “equity,” so maybe it evens out in whatever woke calculus he’s using.

Hopp Singg

The monsters name? The Harvey.

Lancastrian Oik

To suggest that something which has “corporeal geometry” is nevertheless somehow “one-dimensional” is prima facie bollocks.

Frank

University of North Texas hey, by some strange quirk of fate we find that the university of Texas is the new home of an old favourite, a radical cyber feminist with a penchant for appropriating mathematical jargon as well.

Dr. Carolyn Guertin.

I thought those rugged cowboys were supposed to be more down to earth than the Californians.

Heh.

[ Rummages deep into the archives. ]

For those who missed Dr Guertin’s contributions to human betterment, here they are.

I find the term "too clever by half argument by linguistically congruent symbolic analogy". In other words, the words form a hypnotic analogy which make me sound super-smart but I'm too intellectually weak to explore the errors I fall into.

Hal

. . . Leda is abducted and fed to a legendary monster living in the abandoned railcar lines under Los Angeles

The railcar lines that are now under Los Angeles appear to be about two to six inches or so under Los Angeles . . .

Perhaps both Leda and the legendary monster are some variety of pixie and thus small enough to fit . . . somewhere . . .

I thought those rugged cowboys were supposed to be more down to earth than the Californians.

I think a lot of Texans will claim Austin is different from the rest of Texas, and that it's also the place the escapees from California are settling. (And, of course, bringing the politics they escaped from along with them.)

Y. Knott

Man, that "the Harvey" monster better not have tentacles - tentacle porn is a P.D.O. of the Japanese, they'll sue...

Ah. The Michael Eric Dyson school of babbling bullsh#t.

Richard Cranium

The Dallas area is also gaining California escapees (Toyota brought a few).

"...a description of the aesthetic dimensions of discrimination through the geometric deployment of lines (that maximally extend white bodies into space) and an angle of vision (that constitutes totalized and rigidified racial hierarchies).”

But no pictures to provide the reader examples/evidence of the truth of his assertions. Or is asking for such things bad form?

Dr Evil

What Lewis wrote about lines, geometry and dimensions is basically gobbledegook. It has very little coherent meaning. If that passes for academic prose then I'm glad I attended university 40 plus years ago. Medicine and sciences, thank God.

David in Michigan

His writing reminds me of my early twenties, a college kid smoking weed with friends, philosophizing on the meaning of life and the world. Trying to apply that calculus and advanced geometry learnin'. It all seemed so clear at the time...... not so much later on.

Your Guertin post takes me back. Have I been hanging out in this joint for over a decade? Geez Louise in a chicken basket, I need some new hobbies.

Too many academics these days mimic scholarship without accompanying it with the discipline of thought that actually constitutes scholarship. They remind me of a child imitating his dad in a workshop by pounding away on plastic saws, hammers, and boards, the difference being that the child will one day grow up to use real tools.

Doug

Question: why is “Dr.” Lewis using the colonialist patriarchal English language instead of Swahili? Does he live in a mud hut shaped like a female breast or a stick frame house designed by toxic male aggression that destroyed thousands of old growth trees? And since it’s summer in North America, shouldn’t he be up in the mountains gathering berries to feed the women of his tribe as they hunt elk and bear?

Sporkatus

So, we're positing alien geometries, the likes of which White Man might stare at and go mad, eh?

The effect was that of a Cyclopean city of no architecture known to man or to human imagination, with vast aggregations of night-black masonry embodying monstrous perversions of geometrical laws and attaining the most grotesque extremes of sinister bizarrerie. There were truncated cones, sometimes terraced or fluted, surmounted by tall cylindrical shafts here and there bulbously enlarged and often capped with tiers of thinnish scalloped discs; and strange, beetling, table-like constructions suggesting piles of multitudinous rectangular slabs or circular plates or five-pointed stars with each one overlapping the one beneath. There were composite cones and pyramids either alone or surmounting cylinders or cubes or flatter truncated cones and pyramids, and occasional needle-like spires in curious clusters of five.

As always ... another case of white-envy ..... black people's biggest problem is that they can't seem to get over the fact that they are ..... black people.

You don't see white people beating black people with geometry or anything else. Most white people have had their hand out to black people for the past 50 years. We feel badly about how people in the distant past abused black people, but that has been over for a long time and none of today's white people had anything to do with that and neither did any of today's black people .... we are on a new slate .... INGRATES ... We've dumbed down education for you, instituted discriminatory hiring practices so Y'all could get jobs that you may or may not be qualified for.

Most white people have left the big cities so that you black folks could have a free hand at showing us white people what a great culture you can develop in those inner city neighborhoods. Need I say more?

Face it ... black people (a large number) hate and envy white people. But for what reason in 2018? I think it's more about that they hate themselves and their wretched lives ....

And, of course, from his picture Tyson is the kind of person that white bread looks at and says, 'Goodness, you're white!

In the States Tyson is a huge chicken processor; decades of 'chicken tender' jokes probably led to the poor clod finally snapping.

He's not even producing authentic frontier gibberish!

It's a cargo cult. Much like socialism. Hence the affinity. So long as we keep feeding them (and their illusions), why should they believe any different?

Austin is a blue pustule on the otherwise (mostly) beautiful face of the Greatest State in the Union. UNT likewise.

As for non-white geometries, Sporkatus beat me to the relevant reference, so some imagery for your entertainment.

Sporkatus

As for non-white geometries, Sporkatus beat me to the relevant reference

It's one of the few times Lovecraft described things in enough detail that somebody might even take a stab at depicting it. Not a mistake he repeated much - mostly after that it was "pulsating, oozing, twisted... it was deeply horrifying, alright?"

Of course, one of my favorite concise descriptions of an attack on sanity via image is a Simpsons gag.

Bart Simpson: Our final painting is the most horrible of all. To even gaze upon it is to go mad...

Homer Simpson: AH! They're dogs! And they're playing poker! AHHHH!

I am not going to follow that link.

whiteness is a kind of one-dimensional way of being in the world

We allocated all the other dimensions to Black Bodies.

corporeal geometry of whiteness

Half a century of academic bloat does this to the geometry-based racial slur of calling whites square.

David

I am not going to follow that link.

She fell in love with the man who captured her, who wanted to devour her flesh… Equal parts H.P. Lovecraft and Joss Whedon, this is weird fiction at its most erotically monstrous.

It occurs to me that the reference to Joss Whedon hasn’t aged terribly well.

Sam Duncan

“It's a cargo cult. Much like socialism. Hence the affinity.”

Bingo.

“Austin is a blue pustule on the otherwise (mostly) beautiful face of the Greatest State in the Union.”

Give 'em their due, they do have the Circuit of the Americas. Then again, they had to call it “the Circuit of the Americas” (universally abbreviated to “Cota”, which sounds like a range of beauty products), instead of something cool like “the American Awesomedrome”, or “the Texas Cathedral of Speed”, like any normal person would.

Pst314

I have seen comments on his shows saying they suggest a creepy personality but I haven’t followed what he’s done.

When not signalling his fashionable disdain for all things white and male...

I'm reminded of this recent piece by Leah Finnegan where she describes the concept of "Urgent Earnestness" or "Urn":

The worrisome thing about Urn is that it’s a trend predicated not on ideas but feelings. There are no new ideas in Urn; there are hardly any ideas at all. More annoyingly, Urn demands a consistent literacy in current-event tick-tockery that is completely useless. The fragmentation of the news cycle, itself a truly postmodern phenomenon, succeeds not in making the general populace any better informed but in making a small class of elites with a lot of free time feel like they are freedom fighters.

Looking at some photos, I have to say I've seen worse. Behold! Cumbernauld! Or the Workers' Accomodation Units at St. Vincent Terrace, in the centre of Glasgow.

Anyway, Tyson's just out of luck; Damon Wayans did it first, and attained the crux of the integral Hobbesian sidereal relation of the parallel dimensity:

Another feminist SJW with thoughts on how to fix men...

https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2018/07/26/who-wants-advice-from-jessica-valenti-on-raising-boys-not-to-be-misogynists/

“Feminist ideas can help men,” she writes, “be it the rejection of expectations that men be strong and stoic or ending the silence around male victims of sexual violence. But boys also need the same kind of culture we created for girls. Thanks to feminism, girls, for example, have everything from “social media campaigns to after-school equality clubs … and real-life spaces where girls can find alternatives to the sexist status quo.”

I'm half tempted to believe the Prof. may be having a larf.
His UNT page washes up here.
Unless, of course, it's a dig at one dimensional white thinking.
Not being not white, I'm not sure.

Oh for the days of Harry Hutton, Hungbunny, EmeraldBile and others I can no longer remember.

@Frank

Hutton is still around, posting occasionally at Chase Me Ladies. He's also on Twitter here.

Heh, Harry Hutton. I wonder how his mother is doing. I believe she lived in Somerset, was it? Wonder if he ever learned the truth about her and that Longbottom cad.

That's a tricky hypothesis to confirm, given that 1) once you shed the squeeing fanboyism it's pretty clear the works he's most famous for depict the female characters rather negatively, and b) the works he's most famous for were largely written by Marti Noxon, who is something of a basket case herself.

R. Sherman

Hutton is still around at his old Blogspot blog "Chase Me Ladies." His last post there was in May. He's also on Twitter under his name.

Doesn't even touch the hem of the great Professor John Frederick Lange himself.

pst314

That's a tricky hypothesis to confirm...

I have only seen Serenity and a few episodes of Firefly. I have not seen his other TV shows and movies, which makes it difficult to evaluate the few comments I've seen. And as you note, squeeing fanboyism (and fangirlism) is not only annoying to us adults, it impedes clear communication and understanding.

Of course, once the Great Meteor from Space strikes the earth and we have to rebuild civilization, we will poll people on what they have to offer the massive effort. Me? I'm a civil engineer. That guy, he's an electrician. That woman, a nurse - a healer. There's the symphony trumpeter, he can teach the children music. Oh, Tyson Lewis, you teach bullshit theories about whiteness and racial hierarchies? OK, you go sit over there with the gender studies major and interpretative dance instructor. If - IF - there's any food left, we'll throw you some crumbs. Otherwise stay out of the way of real people, doing real work.

I call it my GMS test. If what you do would offer no utility to a rebuilding world then I'm not paying any attention to you.

Squires

you go sit over there

Not if there are latrines that need tending or bodies that need burning.

Daniel Ream

If what you do would offer no utility to a rebuilding world

I'm a DevOps engineer. It chastens me to admit that after an honours computer science degree and two decades of honing my craft, post-Meteor I'm probably going to be burning bodies. In the latrine.

Tell Sackett

From one of David's links above:

"It’s important to understand that nonsense of this kind is rarely arrived at by accident. It’s highly unlikely that mere clumsiness and mental dullness would produce such determined vacuity. It’s less probable still that so many academics and students would, by chance and dullness alone, produce vacuity with such eerie uniformity. To produce ‘work’ of the generic emptiness shown above ... requires practice and dedication, and no small dishonesty. One might forgive genuine stupidity and a lack of mental wherewithal, but when people who aren’t entirely stupid are determined to peddle stupidity as the height of intellectual sophistication, well, that’s harder to excuse. In a saner world, Guertin and her peers would be laughed out of every room they entered. And a gentle pelting with soft fruit wouldn’t go amiss."

That, sir, is spot on, and the best paragraph I've read in quite some time. Where's that tip jar?

You know, aliens on the other side of the universe are probably teaching their kids the exact same math, right? Lovecraftian cosmic horrors from hypothetical causally disconnected universes that are unrelated to ours in any way probably arrive at the same mathematical principles (though they may disagree on which constructions are relevant to them).
