Here’s one. Theodore Dalrymple on rioters and their motives:

For four successive nights about 100 youths with balaclavas descended into the street and burned at least 50 cars, as well as a doctors’ office and parts of a school and gas station. Some of them threw Molotov cocktails at the police. It’s difficult to believe that they did not take delight in the opportunity, combining delinquency with supposed moral purpose. But what could that purpose have been? Let us grant for the sake of argument that the shooting [by police] was unjustified. Would it then make sense to burn 50 of your neighbours’ cars and destroy a doctor’s office?

The fact that [Aboubakar] Fofana had a criminal record did not cool their ardor or calm their anger. As is usual in these cases, friends of the deceased could be found to say that “he was a smiling and intelligent young man” who “never looked for problems” (other than robbing people). And we might wonder whether, if he had been shot by a member of a rival gang, there would have been any rioting. It is difficult, then, to escape the conclusion that the rioting was in part motivated by the desire that young men like Aboubakar Fofana should be left to carry on their depredations without hindrance.

The rest here.

Hopp Singg

Well of course he didn't want any problems while he was robbing people.

He probably even told them as much.

David

Well of course he didn’t want any problems while he was robbing people.

And even if one were foolish enough to assume some non-opportunist motive on the part of the rioters, the rioting is nonetheless a moral non sequitur. Of a kind we’ve seen many times.

"A group of travellers who set up an illegal camp have complained that the council has failed to pick up their rubbish. The caravans and cars have been stationed by a power station in Plymouth since July 24. But some now say they are angry about the amount of litter on the road and pavements in the area and fear for their children's health. One woman, who has not been named, said: 'The council people need to do what they’re paid to do. All this rubbish could make my kids ill.'"

David

A group of travellers who set up an illegal camp have complained that the council has failed to pick up their rubbish.

Perhaps we’re expected to believe that the ‘travellers’ – the ones whose illegal encampment has apparently, and quite rapidly, become a biohazard - have been paying their council tax scrupulously.

Some kinds of vermin should be driven into the sea.

David

Julia has an extensive archive of news stories involving ‘travellers’ and their, shall we say, tendencies.

David

And we mustn’t forget this rather glorious encounter, in which the Guardian’s George Monbiot finds that his romantic view of ‘travellers’ doesn’t quite correspond with reality. An ideological crisis ensues.

Should "the unofficial mascot" of this place happen to walk in and see that particular sign behind the bar, I imagine she would see that as a 'gotcha' moment.

Regardless, I must say I am a bit taken aback at that particular choice of phrase.

David

I must say I am a bit taken aback at that particular choice of phrase.

Well, I suppose the degree to which it seems scandalous may depend on whether the reader has had any first-hand contact with said beings. Say, waking up one morning to find an encampment had materialised on or near their property, their home or place of business, with subsequent, barely-veiled intimations that valuable items could be handed over voluntarily, lest they somehow, mysteriously, disappear during the night.

Lancastrian Oik

An alternative to criminality, rioting and general degradation?

How Archbishop "Dagger John" Hughes helped New York's Irish turn around their fortunes in the 19th century. Before he began, life for the immigrants was spectacularly awful:

"Without running water, cleanliness was impossible; sewage piled up in backyard privies, and rats abounded. Cholera broke out constantly in Irish wards. Observers have noted that no Americans before or since have lived in worse conditions than the New York Irish of the mid-nineteenth century...

...An estimated 50,000 Irish prostitutes, known in flash talk as “nymphs of the pave,” worked the city in 1850, and Five Points alone had as many as 17 brothels. Illegitimacy reached strato-spheric heights—and tens of thousands of abandoned Irish kids roamed, or prowled, the city’s streets. Violent Irish gangs, with names like the Forty Thieves, the B’boys, the Roach Guards, and the Chichesters, brought havoc to their neighborhoods. The gangs fought one another and the nativists—but primarily they robbed houses and small businesses, and trafficked in stolen property. Over half the people arrested in New York in the 1840s and 1850s were Irish, so that police vans were dubbed “paddy wagons” and episodes of mob violence in the streets were called “donnybrooks,” after a town in Ireland.

Death was everywhere. In 1854 one out of every 17 people in the sixth ward died. In Sweeney’s Shambles the rate was one out of five in a 22-month period. The death rate among Irish families in New York in the 1850s was 21 percent, while among non-Irish it was 3 percent. Life expectancy for New York’s Irish averaged under 40 years. Tuberculosis, which Bishop Hughes called the “natural death of the Irish immigrants,” was the leading cause of death, along with drink and violence."

Mustn't call them vermin, David.

I think I may have mentioned some time ago that I once practiced criminal law in a large town in Northern England, population c. 120,000. There was a sizeable (about 150-200 all told) "traveller"/gypsy/Irish tinker "community" who inhabited a site near the town centre. A genuine consensus existed amongst us lawyers, the police, the court clerks and the various probation officers and social workers who made up the (triple oxymoron warning) "criminal justice system" that if the place ever closed down then within six months at least half of us would have been looking for new jobs elsewhere- probably wherever the "travellers" descended upon next...

It must've been the wrong answer.

I must say I am a bit taken aback at that particular choice of phrase.

Back in the late '80s and early '90s I lived in an Oxforshire village, Ascott-under-Wychwood.

About a half mile from home one day, I was following another car, the passenger of which hurled a sizable bag of garbage out the window just before turning off onto a turnout, where there was a newly installed Roma caravan.

By the time they left a few weeks later, the surrounding area looked as if a procession of tornados had chosen it to empty an untold number of rubbish tips.

Yes, it is generally a bad idea, to "otherize" people.

But that doesn't mean some people can't otherize themselves.

David

Yes, it is generally a bad idea, to “otherize” people. But that doesn’t mean some people can’t otherize themselves.

And to clarify, I’ve no particular ethnic connotation in mind, merely a pattern of antisocial behaviour. One that’s difficult to reconcile with the tendency of people like Monbiot to see the perpetrators either as victims, to be forever excused from normal decencies, or as quaint and awfully charming.

David

But that doesn’t mean some people can’t otherize themselves.

I suppose that’s the thing. If your chosen lifestyle is rooted in parasitism and a belief that, having turned someone’s field or whatever into a litter-strewn biohazard, you can just move on and leave some other sucker to deal with it, then other antisocial tendencies are hardly surprising. And the more that such behaviour is indulged and excused by councils, police and pundits, in the name of some alleged group victimhood, the more likely it is that those antisocial behaviours will be emboldened. As illustrated by the Henry Vincent saga, linked here and upthread.

And as a result, the reputation of said “community” grows ever more unflattering.

R. Sherman

There's another solution to the problem of people who create squalor and health hazards and then allow their children to live in it: Remove the children from the encampment because of their parents' neglect and place them in foster care with a goal of ultimately finding adoptive families. The travelers can live as they wish; they just won't be able to pass their anti-social "culture" down to future generations.

R. Sherman

Somewhat related.

Trump is a communist nazi, or something. They "fixed" his star in Hollywood, and apparently antifa approves.

David Davis

On 29th May, "travellers" invaded and occupied Thwaites Brewery in Blackburn. They evicted all the staff and proceeded to rip out and take away all the elctrical wiring, metal fittings and other 2useful items", trashing the offices and defaecating randomly while they wree about it. The Police "attended", with a "vehicle", but left 10 mins later.

Brian is doing his part. It is your fault if you don't act on his advice. You will be complicit in the Trump Catastrophe which threatens to utterly and literally destroy the World as We Know It! Which was almost perfect, as everyone agrees, before Putin installed Trump in the Oval Office.

Me? I'm supporting Brian by commenting on the post about his Tweet Philosophy.

So get busy, people. We have a country to save, one tweet at a time.

David

They... proceeded to rip out and take away all the electrical wiring, metal fittings and other “useful items”

Causing a quarter of a million in damage, apparently.

And I can’t help thinking that the fondness for ostentatiously defecating on other people’s property, even when toilets are available, is meant as a sign of both contempt and triumph, of gleeful, spiteful domination. A behaviour no doubt fuelled by feeble responses from councils and police, and a subsequent sense of impunity.

Governor Squid

I understand that personal firearms are hard to come by (at least for the generally law-abiding), but why in Heaven's name haven't we seen a couple of hundred villagers with torches and pitchforks move in and chase these invaders out?

Honestly, why should the Antifa types get to have all the fun?

Lancastrian Oik

...(O)stentatiously defecating on other people’s property, even when toilets are available...

On the other hand, they may just have been sampling Thwaites' wares. A gallon or so of "Lancaster Bomber" could have that effect, especially if you're not used to it.

Well as this is open link thread, this came up on my FB feed but apparently happened back in 2013. Some student (some reports say 18 year old sophomore) rants off at his remedial (?) History teacher.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qxh-SO9AcY

Don't know if anyone here had seen this before as it is 5 years old. I'm sure someone has though I don't recall it myself,. It's real curious to me what happened to this guy. He'd be 23 years old now? Or at least 21. He had a Twitter account (of course) but can't find any reference to him since. The comments sections of various you tube and news feeds from the time make him out to be a hero. Even from (supposed) teachers.

WTP

is meant as a sign of both contempt and triumph, of gleeful, spiteful domination.

This defecation trend that keeps coming up reminds me of an old joke. "How can you tell if a (*insert preferred looked down upon ethnic group here*) has burgled your house? The toilet seat is up and your cat is pregnant." I'm getting nostalgic for a better class of vermin. At least they used the toilet back then.

Daniel Ream

Have you no bulldozers in Britain?

pst314

why in Heaven's name haven't we seen a couple of hundred villagers with torches and pitchforks move in and chase these invaders out?

I strongly suspect that a chief reason is that although the British police will not arrest Travelers who are committing serious crimes, they will arrest good citizens who take matters into their own hands.

Wasn't there an incident a few years ago in which a disgruntled farmer drove his manure spreader past the local government offices, liberally covering its walls with manure? I would love to see that happen to a Travelers squatters encampment.

Because of stuff like this, Families ordered to remove kids’ paddling pool from garden by housing officials in case BURGLAR drowns.

Common core math...

Sam Duncan

I don't even know where to begin with this. We're all Nazis who... er, stood up to a pan-European empire that, um... wants to invade our shores... or... something? Utterly bizarre.

Trevor

We are blessed to live not far from an alleged 'travelling community' (or 'caravan-utilising nomadic types' as they are known locally) whose peregrinations in the almost twenty years I've known the area seem to take them no further than the nearby Sainsbury's store, where their vibrant grazing both provides a picturesque contrast to the mundane shopping and purchasing activities of the 'mainstream' clientele, and also ensures that the shelves seldom remain overburdened.

PiperPaul

I don't understand the headline/premise vs the math in that MailOnline story. Are they idiots?

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Italy, Bosnia, and Romania are invading France, Belgium, and The Netherlands to stop the southeast UK nazis centered in London. It is a plain as the nose on Clausewitz's face.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, write headlines.

I swear I can’t tell if this site is parody or not.

I envision myself saying to my brown doctor, “If you’re in the moid, and you’re not feeling too oppressed today, would it be too much white privilege if I humbly request that you consider looking at my sore throat?”

He’d have me committed.

MC

I’ve no particular ethnic connotation in mind, merely a pattern of antisocial behaviour.

And indeed there is no ethnic connotation; most travellers are of Irish origin and no different ethnically from you and me*

Caravan utilising nomadic types. Bravo!

*well, if we were the product of 10 generations of cousins fucking.

champ

I don't understand the headline/premise vs the math in that MailOnline story. Are they idiots?

I think I figured it out. Most of the patriarchy focuses on the "total hours," which is a male (very bad) mistake. I think what they are saying is that each hour that a woman works is longer than an hour that a man works...! So the average female hour worked might be 120 minutes, whereas the average male hour worked is 112 minutes...

Hopp Singg

When am I going to be paid for my emotional labor in listening to their vacuous feminist bleatings?

[Excuse the redundancy.]

Darleen

I swear I can’t tell if this site is parody or not.

I'm reading that as a supervisor and, no, I'm not going to research your social media posts to see how you are feeling before I call you into my office to see why you didn't get your assigned work done.

And if your idea of "nice" = "white" and you are deliberately uncivil to your co-workers, we are going to have a problem.

Chester Draws

"Are you asking or demanding?"

My supervisor asks me to do things. Really he is demanding, but he is a super-nice guy, so he phrases thing politely. It's his job to make sure I do my job.

But now I'm confused, because he isn't white and I am. Is he meant to be nice? Is it OK for him to demand without checking how I am feeling?

I'm stunned that anyone would publish that and not think they would be laughed at.

Like so much of EF, having their way would be counter-productive. Whites are not going to employ Blacks if they have to walk on egg-shells around them. Black friendly businesses would fail if their employees got to determine if and when they worked.

Do you really want the state to get in the habit of solving 'social' problems like this?

Social Worker: "That's racist. You're racist against Travelers. We're taking your kids away, here's the warrant. You can be racist as you wish, you just won't be able to pass your racist 'culture' down to future generations".

This -- much like police and prosecutors with misplaced priorities, or Travelers squatting on one's property, or the overenthusiastic Mad Scientist on the hill -- is another problem just screaming out for the miracle solution that is Torches & Pitchforks™.
