Footnote of note.

Inevitable. :-)

See also, fishy.

Because.

Because.

It helps if you think of it as a game of Gotcha! played by escaped mental patients.

LOL. That.

David

It’s so transparently contrived and insincere, to a degree that insulting.

I suppose the woke-lings’ signature shunning and hair-trigger indignation makes a kind of sense if you bear in mind the fact that being woke is largely about pretending. It’s a world of vanity and make-believe. And so, if someone in the vicinity isn’t willing to pretend - or worse, says “Hey, these guys are pretending” - then the collective pretence, and all of the pretenders, are in danger of being revealed.

And so everyone must play, or be blocked, or immediately denounced.

Frank
It’s so transparently contrived and insincere, to a degree that insulting.
Yes!

Cruel and remorseless mockery is the only plausible response.

David

Yes!

You have to wonder – do they not realise that we can see what they’re doing? Just how credulous do they think we are?

But apparently, we’re expected to accept that Mr Brendon Hope, a Guardian contributor, really believes that the word “meltdown” is “an ableist slur” and intended to harm the genuinely disabled, as opposed to overgrown adolescents with no sense of proportion. And likewise, we’re expected to believe that Ms Laura Terry is genuinely fearful that the word “fishy” will somehow, via some circuitous string of associations, traumatise women everywhere, along with trans women. Despite the fact that when people use the word “fishy” to mean “questionable” or “dubious,” they aren’t generally thinking of vaginas at all.

I think we can be forgiven for entertaining the more likely possibility – i.e., that Mr Hope and Ms Terry are just opportunist scolds playing a petty and neurotic status game.

WTP

You have to wonder – do they not realise that we can see what they’re doing? Just how credulous do they think we are?

They don't care about convincing us to accept their wokeness. So long as they convince enough others. And if they use the proper (really improper, but that's a whole other issue) language and at the very least sound intellectual, over sufficient time they will make inroads up to the point that some of their lunacy adds new items to the "things you just don't say" list no matter how silly it is to take such objections seriously. And sufficient numbers of the not-us crowd are overgrown adolescents with no sense of proportion. Maybe not a majority but a minority that is vocal enough to intimidate the more weak minded into believing they are a majority.

Side note but not completely off topic, there is (IMNSHO) a significant correlation between people of seemingly high IQ and a higher than average gullibility factor. Without real world applications to bring such people down to earth with realities that are outside of their quasi-autistic tunnel vision, such as is essentially what much of government funded academia is, shouldn't where we are today with this nonsense have been somewhat predictable?

Farnsworth M Muldoon

It helps if you think of it as a game of Gotcha! played by escaped mental patients.

Speaking of escaped mental patients and things fishy, let us join the Vagical Mystery Tour to make abortion safe, legal, rare, and above all, fun, by "...invoking their improvisation skills and natural wit to make jokes out of the situation."

Meanwhile, while not part of the troupe of zanies above, let us join this young miss in celebrating her herpes. A good time will be had by all, and there will be snacks.

"One of my friends brought cupcakes. I had a little number three candle," she said.

However, apparently not having to worry about either of the above, transphobia is still a thing as, "...it comes as no surprise that trans people are overlooked when it comes to dating. Two Canadian researchers recently asked almost 1000 cisgender folks if they would date a trans person in a new study...Only 12% of all participants selected “trans woman” and/or “trans man.”..."

The high rates of trans exclusion from potential dating pools are undoubtedly due in part to cisnormativity, cissexism, and transphobia...

Of course it is, how dare anyone have a preference, though I am not sure how all that "cis" nonsense plays out as the study showed neither gays nor lesbians were much down for the struggle either.

Governor Squid

...do they not realise that we can see what they’re doing?

They don't realize we even exist. To the extent that we enter their little bubbles of perception at all, it's only for the few moments required to point us out to their mobs for whatever problematic behavior they've decided to be offended by.

I think it's part and parcel of the tribalism we're seeing infect every aspect of our lives. Think of it as the escaped mental patients all being Chelsea* players. They really only care about the other players on their side, the supporters in the stands, and performing well enough to extract a few extra quid from the owner. The rest of us are Everton fans, and as such, even when one of these idiots steps on the ball and falls flat on his arse, they don't care if we point and laugh, because we don't belong to the only part of the world that they recognize as having value.

It's not like we were ever going to buy their shirt anyway.

* Overpaid by an entity with more money than sense, overrated, unaccountable, featured in the press every bloody day for the most inane things, frustrated that the success to which they are entitled remains out of reach.... Tell me the boot doesn't fit.

ComputerLabRat

though I am not sure how all that "cis" nonsense plays out as the study showed neither gays nor lesbians were much down for the struggle either

I don't see why this is such a mystery - if a female liked penis, she wouldn't technically be a lesbian, now, would she?

This redefining of words to suit a small group of people's fantasies is really starting to torque me off.

And this "ableism" stuff in the original post is just plain ridiculous. Stupid. It's almost like they are reaching reaaaalllly far to find another -ism or -phobia with which to label people they don't like.

Go Shatner - I love how he tweaks the idiots out there on Twitter.

Phil

The rest of us are Everton fans

As a European who remembers the Heysel disaster, I've been puzzled for a long time by the United Colours of Benetton notions that Nicewhite Americans have of soccer culture. But recently I've noticed that progressive Americans have started to glamourise the hooligan aspects of soccer as edgy and authentic, and to playact at marching around in masks and setting off smoke bombs.

The leftist establishment never were against tribalism in principle, they were against tribalism that could be used against them. And I'm wondering if that establishment is more comfortable now with encouraging young men to practice intense social cohesion and street skirmishing tactics because they feel that the demographics and political affiliations of those groups are such that if a riot breaks out, it'll be for the correct causes.

Daniel Ream

This redefining of words to suit a small group of people's fantasies is really starting to torque me off.

That isn't the issue. It's that here in the Deranged Dominion, at least, they've managed to enshrine this madness into law, which means it's being enforced by force of arms.

Go Shatner - I love how he tweaks the idiots out there on Twitter.

I'm virtually certain that's not Shatner (like, it's an intern or something). I've met him a couple of times and his Twitter account just doesn't sound like him. I'm very surprised he's gone the Sajak route because it's become a bit of a running gag that Shatner loses all of his money every few years and ends up taking whatever jobs he can, no matter how embarrassing, to pay the bills. For an actor, outing yourself as a conservative on Twitter is a very good way of ensuring you never work again, so I wonder if he's just decided he's had enough and is just settling into crotchety retirement.

Dom

Don't say the tweet is stupid, because "stupid" is an ableist slur.

"“In my view, the fact that this word is a slur is self-evident,” Jenny Crofton writes in a piece [in Everyday Feminism] titled “Yes, ‘Stupid’ Is an Ableist Slur – Let’s Unpack Your Defensiveness About That.”

Crofton explains that not only is stupid “an insult,” which she claims is “reason enough to stop using it,” (something that I, personally, disagree with — we need insults in our language because let’s face it, sometimes people deserve them) but that it’s also an ableist term because “it’s used to insult people with cognitive impairments, autism, Down syndrome, ADD, and other developmental disabilities.”

Chester Draws

Conservatives never get work in Hollywood?

I'm pretty sure Mel Gibson is conservative, and his latest films got Academy Awards. Sure it was a feel good story of a conscientious objector, but they let him direct it.

Clint Eastwood, Dwayne Johnson, Tom Selleck etc are not just conservative, but quite openly so.

It's not quite as simple as you make out. I'm sure work is easier to get if you are openly progressive, but there's no blacklisting.

Governor Squid

But recently I've noticed that progressive Americans have started to glamourise the hooligan aspects of soccer as edgy and authentic...

As a member of one of these supporters groups, I can assure you that it is indeed playacting. We're quite aware of the uglier aspects of supporter culture, and significant efforts are made to ensure that we leave the worst of it with your professional lackwits on that side of the pond. Hell, we had somebody throw a can of beer at an opponent's striker who was taunting them, and the amount of handwringing currently going on because of it is just embarrassing.

Besides, everyone knows that our rioting business has been cornered by whomever is pulling Antifa's strings. I don't want to put in the amount of work required to carve out a piece of that market.

WTP

Americans have started to glamourise the hooligan aspects of soccer as edgy and authentic...

Slightly off topic but one fascist rule I would whole heartedly endorse would be that any American whose ringtone is set to the "Olé, Olé, Olé" song could be shot. Don't ask me why I feel so strongly about this.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

...but there's no blacklisting.

James Woods, Stacy Dash, and many others would disagree.

Sure it was a feel good story of a conscientious objector...

That is selling both the movie and CPL Doss, awarded the Medal of Honor for the actions in the movie (not to mention his prior awards of Bronze Star with V device and OLC), a bit short.

Governor Squid

awarded the Medal of Honor for the actions in the movie (not to mention his prior awards of Bronze Star with V device and OLC)

These are not important to the Academy. Better to stick with the "conscientious objector" angle.

Daniel Ream

James Woods, Stacy Dash, and many others would disagree.

Add Adam Baldwin, Kevin Sorbo, Patricia Heaton and the late Ron Silver to the list. Generally Hollywood is more inclined to tolerate libertarian conservatives than social conservatives.

Clint Eastwood, Dwayne Johnson, Tom Selleck etc are not just conservative, but quite openly so.

They are now. It's pretty much a given that if you're a Hollywood conservative and not independently wealthy or an A-List star yet, keeping your political and/or religious views close to the vest is job security.

Chester Draws

I agree Daniel. But there's a difference between less inclined to tolerate and blacklisting.

There's a whole load of progressive actors who stop getting work too. Sometimes a conservative doesn't get work for reasons completely unrelated to politics. If Charlie Sheen was conservative some would link his lack of work to his politics.

What annoys me is the pressure put on some celebrities to state positions. Taylor Swift has had to endure rather too much of this. She's a young pop singer. Her politics is totally irrelevant to her job.

Rob

I don’t even understand how ‘meltdown’ relates to disabled people. His comment fails even on its own terms, regardless of his inevitable cynicism and hypocrisy.

David

I don’t even understand how ‘meltdown’ relates to disabled people.

I think the implied claim is that because some children with autism, for instance, can have emotional outbursts related to their condition, we therefore shouldn’t be allowed to criticise emotionally incontinent adults, even when their outbursts and tantrums are nothing to do with disability and are in fact evasive, abusive, bullying, etc. It assumes that the word meltdown is now, somehow, a proprietary term, for exclusive use by parents of autistic children, etc., and must never be used by anyone else.

If that sounds a little contrived, that’s because it is.

R. Sherman

From Sneeze's link:

“That’s a misconception and a myth,” he said regarding performance boosts due to higher testosterone levels. “There’s no physiologic advantage to being assigned male at birth.”

So, just ignore all those world record lists in things like track and field or the inconvenient incidents where ostensibly world class women's soccer teams keep losing to U15 boys' squads. The Inner Party will determine the facts, Comrade!

I sneeze in threes

The use of the word assigned makes me raise an eyebrow. There is no benefit in being assigned male at birth, you have to actually be male at birth, the relevance of the assigning is surely dependent on the skills and/ or motivation of the one carrying out the assigning.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

...he said regarding performance boosts due to higher testosterone levels. “There’s no physiologic advantage to being assigned male at birth.”

From the link, "he", being Alex Keuroglian, an academic psychiatrist whose "research" has bugger all to do with physiology, but a lot to do with LSMFT politics, vs. Bob Girandola who, though not an MD, has evidently been involved in training people since around 1970, and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Who to believe on this one is a real puzzler.

Squires

Why do eunuchs sing differently than the intact? Why was the young lady who recently lifted a particular pair of large Scottish stones only the second to do so in their recorded history? Why am I asked to move furniture, push cars, and open jars?

They know. The important thing to them is pretending, and rationalizing away, the knowing. All in order to fit in.

Like all the truly brave, by their definition of “brave”, must do.

Again, the parallels to maintaining an abusive relationship are hard to miss.

Jon Powers

I say we call their bluff. No more separate men's and women's events. They will compete against one another, because inclusion. Now admittedly, that effectively means the end of women's sports, but oh well. Take the 100m. Florence Griffith-Joyner (Flo-Jo) ran the fastest time a woman has ever run back in 1988, with a time of 10.49. I'll let someone else confirm my math, but according to my calculations that record has stood for 30 years. The entry mark required for men to qualify for the Olympic 100m event is 10.16. So, basically zero women would make the Olympic team in that event. I'm sure they'ed fair better in boxing.

Star Trek: the Retirement Home Years

Oh dear. It has an air of someone not knowing when to leave a party.

Wait a minute. In the last TNG episode, wasn’t Ancient And Quarrelsome Picard Of The Future™ portrayed as suffering from some kind of space dementia - or was that just one possible future? Of course, I’m now picturing a niche sci-fi series about a dotty old duffer who soils himself and can’t find his teeth.

Daniel Ream

I agree Daniel. But there's a difference between less inclined to tolerate and blacklisting.

There's a whole load of progressive actors who stop getting work too. Sometimes a conservative doesn't get work for reasons completely unrelated to politics.

Claim: A -> B
C -> B != A <> B
D -> B != A <> B

Governor Squid

The fastest time for a woman completing a marathon is 2:15 or 2:17, depending upon which authority you wish to recognize. By comparison, the men's fastest time is 2:03. By further comparison, men first hit the 2:15 mark in 1958, an age when sports science consisted of "maybe put down the cigarette until the event is over."

So by all means, if the Powers That Be demand that we stop recognizing significant differences between men, women, and those few poor souls who haven't figured it out yet, then let's just run an open marathon with no such distinctions. Let's pop some popcorn and watch the feminists and the LMNOP± brigade sort it out.

R. Sherman

Let's pop some popcorn and watch the feminists and the LMNOP± brigade sort it out.

The Third Wave Feminists sowed the seeds of their own destruction by embracing the idea that the sexes are fungible and a mere social construct. Not only did they eliminate the rationale for Title IX set-asides, but they opened themselves up to domination by the "Big Trans," as self-declared "females" demand entry to heretofore exclusively female spaces.

Popcorn, indeed.

Steve E

Florence Griffith-Joyner (Flo-Jo) ran the fastest time a woman has ever run back in 1988, with a time of 10.49.

To your point, High School boys regularly run under that time. Not to mention Flo-Jo's results are strongly believed to be PED assisted.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

To your point, High School boys regularly run under that time.

For your amusement, go to page 5 and compare the times/scores (100=max, fail>60) for a 62+ year old man vs. a 17-21 year old female (100=max, fail<60), because there is no difference according to our learned shrink.

Steve E

For your amusement...

Oh my. Might explain why older men go for younger women.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Meanwhile in Sweden... "...chief heraldists remain dissatisfied with a decision by the Nordic Battlegroup to remove a lion's penis depicted on its coat of arms."

With civilian women often falling victim to sexual abuse in the war zones of the world, the Commander said he did not consider the male appendage an appropriate symbol for his troops to wear into battle.

Lion rape has always been a leading cause of non-battle casualties, I can see his point, but read the rest for a proposed solution to this dilemma.

Governor Squid

In former times, coats of arms containing lions without genitalia were given to those who betrayed the Swedish Crown.

Please let next week's headline be King Carl Gustaf announcing that any man wearing this symbol of betrayal will be considered a traitor to the Crown and shot on sight.

Please please pretty please!

Governor Squid

There's nothing more problematically colonial than indoor plumbing. Let's insist that these idiots prove their bona fides by pulling out their plumbing fixtures, digging latrines in their back yards, and fetching water from a well in the town square a half-mile away.

Nah, younger women are prettier and more likely to be fertile than older women (as a general rule).

hahahaha! The years do seem to be harder on a woman, or maybe it's that because men remain fertile into old age, we are programmed to find even old men attractive. Biology is not my main field.

But there are some women who are good looking into their dotage, and some men who age quite badly. And I am going to guess that politics more than age has affected how Kelly McGillis looks now. There's an aging SJW whiff about that picture.

Pogonip

Governor Squid, a lot of people in India don’t bother with the latrine part. There’s a guy in India, I forgot his name, who has spent 30 years in a quixotic effort to get his countrymen to stop pooping wherever they happen to be, including the street.

Squires

The years do seem to be harder on a woman, or maybe it's that because men remain fertile into old age, we are programmed to find even old men attractive.

Sperm quality declines significantly as men age. However, pairing off with an older man gets a younger woman more security for her offspring, whose genetic material may be acquired elsewhere.

There are more of both in NYC, but as much of a soup sandwich DeBlasio is, he doesn't have to come up with a plan to teach people not to crap on the streets, and if they do, how to clean it up, so yeah, it is the people.

However, apparently not having to worry about either of the above, transphobia is still a thing as, "...it comes as no surprise that trans people are overlooked when it comes to dating. Oh, it gets better ...

Of the seven participants who themselves identified as transgender or nonbinary, 89% were willing to date another trans person.

Not sure how you get 89% out of 7 people (my math says 6/7 is 86%), but apparently even some of these delusionals aren't willing to date their fellow nuts.

ComputerLabRat

It would seem that even a bloke in a dress knows better than to stick "her" dick in crazy.

So is it still considered transphobia if they do it? Seriously - what's their excuse for not wanting one of their own? They want to stick the normal people of one of the two standard mammal sexes with some -phobia or -ism because they prefer other normal people of one of the two standard mammal sexes. Are they gonna label themselves with the same -phobia and -ism?

WTP

No way to verify but I would bet the farm that the 1 in those 7 is the only person with certifiable transgender issues. Sooo, like 0.1%? Prolly somewhere north of there but I'm guessing in the ballpark.

as much of a soup sandwich DeBlasio is, he doesn't have to come up with a plan to teach people not to crap on the streets, and if they do, how to clean it up, so yeah, it is the people.

Or, in actuality, what is stated there is . . .

But Breed laid the blame not at the feet of city policies, or at the feet of the homeless themselves, but with homeless advocacy organizations whom she believes aren't doing enough to educate their clients when it comes to picking up poop.

"I work hard to make sure your programs are funded for the purposes of trying to get these individuals help, and what I am asking you to do is work with your clients and ask them to at least have respect for the community — at least, clean up after themselves and show respect to one another and people in the neighborhood," Breed told NBC.

. . . and as noted for a noted particular area . . . .

And thus still as noted, for the rest of SF . . .

Whoever can solve the dogshit problem can be elected mayor of San Francisco, even president of the United States.

No comment, of course, from the cat lobby . . .

Farnsworth M Muldoon

But Breed laid the blame not at the feet of city policies, or at the feet of the homeless themselves, but with homeless advocacy organizations whom she believes aren't doing enough to educate their clients when it comes to picking up poop.

Oh, well, that is so much better, you lot need "homeless advocacy organizations" to teach people not to crap on the streets.

Here in the civilized states we don't need "homeless advocacy organizations" to teach people not to crap on the streets, as it is something that doesn't happen. Dog crap is rare because our dog owners pick up after the dogs, and our outdoor cats are smart enough to bury theirs.

So, yeah, it is the people there. Face it, when a major medical organization thinks your city is too much of a health hazard to have a convention there, you might just live in a real shithole.

Hal

Dog crap is rare because our dog owners pick up after the dogs, and our outdoor cats are smart enough to bury theirs.

So, yeah, it is the people there. . . .

Uh huh. Yeahright.

There are an estimated 120,000 dogs in San Francisco, according to the city's Animal Care and Control department. There are anywhere from 108,000 to 113,000 children, according to U.S. census figures from 2000 and 2005.

. . . and still as noted for a noted particular area, and still as noted all over for dogs . . .

Steve E

[ Starts boarding up windows and hiding anything remotely breakable. ]

There are an estimated 120,000 dogs in San Francisco...

Of the five boroughs, Manhattan alone is about half the area of San Fransisco, but has the highest population density of NYC's 425,000 mutts, but absent any "Occupy ______________ (fill in the blank)" wackos crapping on cop cars, Manhattan isn't awash with either human or dog crap on the streets. Therefore, regarding The Great Golden Gate Open Air Latrine, yeah, it is the people, but your staunch denial of reality and defense of the poopistes is truly a caution.

Hal

. . . but absent any "Occupy ______________ (fill in the blank)" wackos crapping on cop cars, . .

Do tell.

Hal

. . . but your staunch denial of reality and . . .

Ah yes, and reality.

Lessee.

San Francisco population, apparently about 870,887.

San Francisco dog numbers, as noted, apparently about 120,000.

Number of homeless in SF, apparently about 7,000.

And dogs are dogs.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Bless your heart, Hal.

Manhattan - half the area, more dogs, more people, no problem with mounds of crap all over.

San Fransisco - let's go with your screwball notion that it is just dogs, despite all the protestations from the mayor and most everyone else who lives in the city not named Hal, all that means is what you are saying, then, is that San Franciscans are either too lazy to clean up dog crap, or fine with living with mounds of dog crap, so, yeah, it is the people. I guess it is the dogs shooting up and leaving their needles all over the place too, right ?

It is a sorry pass indeed when I have to use a dump like NYC to show how messed up San Fransisco is.

Hal

let's go with your screwball notion that it is just dogs . . .

Well, no, we can't because we can see the actual statement and actually read it rather than where you, as it were, openly step in it by indulging in the same sort of wishful fantasy that's been totally debunked.

Mayor Breed comments on the people who are involved, who are---go ahead and go look for it---that smaller number than the number of dogs, which number is still smaller than the number of, as you note, San Franciscans.

So the original observation remains completely accurate.

---Unless, of course, you're merely signalling your piety, in which case you're merely being one with your variety of mere declaimer.
