There's a whole scene of YouTubers hacking soundtracks to picture. One of my favourite is the "shreds" series on guitar heroes. Concert footage of famous rock guitar legends has their playing, ahem, upgraded. It's Les Dawson for the noughties - or something. Here's Eric Clapton Shreds:

The sax was pretty, um, special.

I love the way all the non-guitar performances are rendered with deliberately piss-pauvre sub-casio samples, and the arena enthusiasm is replaced with polite, tentative clapping. The replacement playing is a mixture of incompetence and atonal avant-gardism, reminiscent of the Portsmouth Sinfonia's "Classical Muddley". I wouldn't be surprised if our relacement guitarist is really a free-jazzer, inspired by players like the late, great Derek Bailey. It brings to mind a remark by Arnold Schoenberg, who once said (from memory) "My music isn't really avant-garde - it's just incredibly badly played".

De gustibus non est dispudantum, eh what; in my attempt to bring a smile I offer in kind this Trek/Python "Camelot" mash-up: http://youtube.com/watch?v=luVjkTEIoJc

Because as Oscar Wilde said, "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they will kill you".

I fear this mashing / shredding lark could catch on.

But is this raucous little number a mash-up or an instance of shredding…?

O man, thank you georges, i am spent with laughing, shredded to pieces--clapton, santana, slash--woo, back to work.

Can I offer this as an antidote?
