No, the spark was ignited by his flatulence. The story is obviously wrong.

Entirely plausible, alas. There have been cases of explosions when intestinal gas was ignited by a surgical cautery being used to remove precancerous polyps. However a posting at the discussion linked above indicates that the poor chap only suffered scorching, and presumably healed up.
