Genital mutilation always makes me think of Sir Charles Napier's statement on Suttee while in India:

"Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."

If you find a girl who's been mutilated, you treat it as child abuse and lock up everybody who had anything to do with it for a very long time. That'd put a stop to it. It's a foul practice and should not be tolerated.

OK, so you'd think that someone the left regard as a leading intellectual would have the brains to avoid such a multilayered trainwreck of irony and fail. But maybe the brilliance of her arguments can in some way make up for her hapless blunderings and comical lack of self awareness.

So why does Ms Greer wish to defend this brutal and retrograde practice? Because opposing it is "and attack on cultural identity." Just like opposing state sponsored mass slaughter for entertainment is an attack on Roman identity, or opposing endemic warfare and cannibalism is an attack on Maori cultural identity.

Now, that may not strike you as the most intelligent or persuasive argument in the world, but she has more:
