Avert your eyes, readers, and shove things in your ears. This cultural appropriation may corrupt your mind.

Why is it the Chinese/Japanese/Koreans can do western music so staggeringly well, yet our new friends from the R of P have so little clue about anything western?

Do the 'cultural appropriation' crowd actually like music? Or anything that's fun?
Posted by: sk60 | December 01, 2015 at 16:06
Cultural appropriation obsession is a former of puritanism. Puritanism being that nagging fear that someone, somewhere may be happy.

Wow. I've grown accustomed to finding great stuff here, but this time you outdid yourself.

That's pretty darn cool. Okay, it'll never match the original, but then again what could? And I'd like to think Mr Hooker would approve.

Absolutely brilliant. If Zamfir could get an album deal, this girl surly deserves one.

Excellent, and a very pretty girl.
That Amazon widget is um, strange. The Blindell promotion someone remarked on the other day is still going strong.

Is it racist of me to say that after watching this video, I feel like eating soul food with chopsticks?

Most of the commenters here would think, I guess, that the West will decline either through its own inanition as exemplified by the clown quarter of academia, or by hostile action by certain groups who tend to be rather too fond of their camels.
In my view, Ms Lee is the classic example of how the West will actually fall. We will be taken over not by fools or fanatics, but by people who are simply more clever, innovative and talented that we are, and who come from cultures that reward those traits.
Already here in Australia they have captured our symphony orchestras and our home computer repair and maintenance industry. And now that they have outflanked John Lee Hooker, who knows where they will strike next? Its all in Sun Tzu, you know ...

David, you have got it wrong. What you have there is Cultural Imperialism, not Appropriation. Cultural Imperialism is when we force our white patriarchal culture on pure 'other' cultures and so we are at fault for forcing it on them. Cultural Appropriation (Misappopriation!) is where we whites steal the vibrant essential unique elements of someone else's culture, depriving them of their birthright and heritage, and thus we are at fault again. In each case, anyone that thinks otherwise is operating under False Consciousness, where their thinking is incorrect regardless of any arguments to the contrary, and again it is the fault of the white patriarchy of Western Civilization that is at fault. So the woman in the video may think she is playing this music voluntarily, but actually she is being forced to play by the insidious coercive nature of white male culture trying to dominate the type of music played on a traditional Korean musical instrument.
Cultural appropriation offences would occur if you said you liked kimchi or K-pop, which is not allowed unless you are Korean.
Of so we are told to think by our Progressive masters.

James, according to my Progressive non-Christian neo-Bible, it would not be racist if you are African-American as only whites can be racist. You may have to be very careful if you are hispanic, even if you were from the Southern US, as you may qualify as a white-hispanic, and thus be racist as well as guilty of two counts of cultural misappropriation.

I listen to what used to be Radio Korea International, and they obsess about the rest of the world liking K-pop (horrid music if you ask me) and the rest of the "Korean wave".

Oh dear, I foolishly assumed a reciprocal standard. How could I have been so blind, so terribly problematic.
I’ll report to the correction booth. Six hours of heavy scolding should sort me out.

Does a black activist pretending to be a white supremacist on social media count as a form of ‘cultural appropriation’ I wonder?

If a large scale study were to find a significant correlation of identity politics activism and narcissistic personality disorder, I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

The orthodox view used to be to embrace other cultures. Suddenly it has flipped 180 degrees and it is now "cultural appropriation" instead.
Totalitarian movements do a lot of this. Neither 'orthodoxy' is or was sincere; instead it is a "line to take" which must be believed and followed without question. Flipping orthodoxy upside down is a great way of liquidating your opponents and keeping yourself on top.

What if I hate kimchi because I had a Korean roommate who cooked it every day and we used the same bathroom?
Just sayin'
Posted by: dicentra | December 02, 2015 at 23:50
What if I hate kimchi...
Then you would be a racist, regardless of the reasons why you might dislike kimchi. All aspects of other cultures are valuable and must be respected and honoured - not just tolerated. Your own western patriarchal misogynistic culture is worthless and derivative and is only improved by the introduction of immigrants who must be allowed to practice their own culture and language. After all, Diversity is Strength, whatever the hell that means. It is not sufficient to tolerate other cultures, but their practices must be endorsed and supported by you, otherwise you are a racist.
I hope that answers your question.
Posted by: Bill | December 03, 2015 at 03:53
But David, I thought we were racist if we did eat their food. I'm so confused, and I think I'm racist, please tell me what to do!
Posted by: Allan | December 03, 2015 at 10:13
Allan, the answer to your question will be obvious when you can answer the question, "How many fingers am I holding up?". Then, and only then will you be allowed to exit room 101 since you have obviously already started on the double plus good attitude of wanting to obey the party.

Not one single original thing from these appropriators. Once everything has been appropriated and we are all gone then what? A kind of cultural stasis like it was before the white man came along.

Oh, it's not made by cooking, where one can use it as an ingredient in cooking . . .
