Proximo

If you would like to send your condolences to the distinguished professor for her recent brainwashing for undergoing an Ivy league, ivory tower liberal education, her email is publicly available at this site:

[ Deleted. ]

David

Proximo, I don’t encourage that kind of thing. It very easily gets out of hand.

Col. Milquetoast

I thought that was possibly reached last week when it was decreed that people called 'Lynch' must never have buildings named after them.

Because it is important to be sensitive to the emotions of other people; unless their name is Lynch in which case fuck them and go ahead and insist the name they were born with exclusively refers to racist violence.

Darleen

Did you notice that the tag on the Ristrophe article is "science"?

As our host has posted before, the SJWs are busy trying to wedge "intersectionality" and "social justice" into STEM studies. No subject will escape being taught through the lens of Race/Sex/Class.

Stockula

I never knew Alaskans were an ethnic group.

David

No subject will escape being taught through the lens of Race/Sex/Class.

Because that always works out so well.

Darleen

The solar eclipse draws a path of total darkness in an area of near-total whiteness,

WE MUST MAKE PEOPLE LIVE WHERE I SAY!

Don't think they aren't trying to figure out a way to do just that ...

Nikw211

You want woke?

This isn't just woke.

This is woke - with bells on.

WTP

with bells on

Can't see the full effect here in the US but FWICS, it's all white guys. Don't they know about their privilege? Mebbe someone should be sent to woke them.

Spiny Norman

Don't think they aren't trying to figure out a way to do just that ...

The demographics here in the Mojave Desert communities has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, especially since 2008 (investors bought up hundreds, if not thousands of foreclosed homes and immediately set them up as Section 8 rentals). A "victory" for diversity, I suppose...

Spiny Norman

*have changed*

:^P

Judy Shimkus

Doncha know, Donald Trump controls the Moon and can put it wherever he wants. If you believe that, we have some nice bridges for sale here in St. Louis.

Monty James
Well, since Newton's Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica was declared a "rape manual" some years ago, yeah, it has to go.

Norman, I thought you were exaggerating. This was from 1986:

Sandra Harding page on Fampeople.com

Monty James

I ran across that FamPeople site while searching for the Rape Manual quote, but I have to say it looks like a real timewaster:

FamPeople.com

David

Incidentally, for anyone with eclipse envy, NASA will be streaming the whole thing.

Feelings of existential wonderment and/or dread not included.

Spiny Norman

but I have to say it looks like a real timewaster

Or, as Miami Herald humorist Dave Barry would say, "productivity enhancer".

Dusty

If the sun and the moon were conspiring to give the greatest number of African-Americans a view of the highest percentage of an eclipse, the two probably couldn't have picked a better route to do it.

Pogonip

Alaskans per se aren't an ethnic group (otherwise Sarah Palin Derangement Syndrome would have been problematic and possibly racist), but Eskimos, the original Alaska residents, are.

I read the other day that igloo building is a dying art. Seems a pity. I don't know how much Alaskans need it any more, but it would certainly come in handy in Maine.

WTP

Has anybody looked at the number of latinos this thing is supposed to pass over? Or do they not count?

WTP

Ah, my bad. I should look before I leap. The article does mention them in passing, along with the eskimo folk.

Spiny Norman
Has anybody looked at the number of latinos this thing is supposed to pass over? Or do they not count?
They're "living in the shadows", see? So no one will ever know...
Allan

"America is a nation with debts that no honest man can pay."

Unfortunately, this appears to do nothing to deter a bunch of dishonest people from trying to collect.

Spiny Norman
... nothing to deter a bunch of dishonest people from trying to collect.
Antifa are the goons sent to break our legs if we don't pay up.
David

In the world of fluidity, I believe the eclipse did pass over black people, or that the whites it passed over were black. In fact, the eclipse passed over all of America as a symbol of inclusiveness.

Jacob

The message, it seems, is that people – specifically, black ones - aren’t arranged geographically as Professor Ristroph would wish.

We need a committee of woke progressives to tell black people where they should live.

David

We need a committee of woke progressives to tell black people where they should live.

Heh, yes. We must stop all this clumping by colour. And when we’ve scattered all those black people in an ideologically pleasing way, we’ll start on people of Chinese ancestry, who mostly clump around the coast. We can’t have that.

What occurs to me isn’t just the contrivance of the article and its theatrical sorrow, but what the writing of it implies about Professor Ristroph’s social circle, in which, presumably, such displays are not uncommon. And indeed may denote status.

Black Ball

So Monty Burns is a horrible racist?

Whenever I see the phrase “the legacy of slavery” there’s usually bullshit coming.

What Clam said.

[+]

Though it occurs to me that trying to propagate pretentious, collective guilt - an act of psychological malice - and thereby exalting oneself as tearfully compassionate and high-minded, at least among fellow pretenders, isn’t a particularly noble activity either.

What our host said.

Ted S., Catskill Mtns., NY, USA

The homoerotic eclipse.

David

The homoerotic eclipse.

That’s not how I remember the one in 1999.

Steve B

That...that this...that this made it through any level of editorial scrutiny, that this made it into print in ANY publication...

The horror.

jabrwok

We must stop all this clumping by colour.

But if we spread the PoCs out amongst the PoPs (People of Pallor), then they might blend in, as in some kind of giant pot of melting, in which case they'll lose their cultural and ethnic distinctiveness and then where's the Diversity!?!

To preserve Diversity!, we must keep Diverse! groups geographically distinct and actively prevent them from intermingling with other, non-Diverse! groups!

Diversity Today! Diversity Tomorrow! Diversity Forever!

I think I need more exclamation points!!!

Alright, I've got the eclipse kit sorted: Telescope with solar filter; binoculars with solar filters; eclipse glasses including extras for the neighbors, if necessary; pre-cut pieces of solar filter material for cell-phone/tablet cameras; print-out of specifics for my precise location, including altitude and azimuths for the telescope; lawn chairs positioned; vehicle positioned to prevent people from out of town driving on state highway from saying, "Oooh, Morty! Let's park in that field!!!!;" cooler positioned; ice in freezer; beer in fridge.

Bring it on.

David

Bring it on.

Um, surely the beer should’ve been the first thing on the list? Priorities, people.

R. Sherman

Um, surely the beer should’ve been the first thing on the list?

In my defense, it's been in the garage fridge since Thursday.

David

Good man. And don’t forget to share any decent snaps.

WTP

Bring it on.

Yes, I've been waiting for the hordes of crowds that were supposed to be showing up. Still not much different than a July 4 or Memorial Day. I think the Atlanta TV stations scared many people away. The marina where my wife works had a full slate of boat rentals going into the weekend, then had six cancellations.

pst314

"Doncha know, Donald Trump controls the Moon..."

Proof that there are Space Nazis on the Moon?

R. Sherman

I've been waiting for the hordes of crowds that were supposed to be showing up.

I'm out in the weeds, but the towns closest to the center of totality or the interstate highway are pretty packed. Yesterday, in town I saw a lot of out-of-state license plates from states I don't see often. (We get Illinois and Tennessee plates all the time.) Lots of Iowa, South Dakota, Texas and Oklahoma plates, plus a few from Wisconsin and Michigan.

R. Sherman

Right. It's 16:30ish UTC, which in the U.S. Central Time Zone translates to "Beer-Thirty."

Developing

Sort-of-Mad Max

"I have no idea. But will someone keep this man away from Dambusters re-runs."

It was only recently that I've seen an uncut version of that movie, and realized why every other version on TV had all these disconnected shots of a black dog running around. No shots of the dog with people, too. It seemed very strange.

My Kansas grandfather had a black dog of the same name, no doubt for no earthly good reason.

Has anybody looked at the number of latinos this thing is supposed to pass over? Or do they not count?

What about the Asians? Just like in admissions to Ivy League colleges, the Asians are being discriminated against and no one cares...

Daniel Ream

Whenever I see the phrase “the legacy of slavery” there’s usually bullshit coming.

A Facebook friend of mine posted a screed from tumblr (because of course) on how white pride is not okay because there was never a pan-European culture (*cough*Rome*cough*) to be proud of, and black pride is okay because black slaves had their geneaology and ethnic history stripped from them and so black pride unites them in some kind of is-okay pan-African culture...

I asked him how this works for us in Canada, where every black person immigrated long after slavery was outlawed and knows exactly where they came from. And yet we still have black activists shutting down our gay pride parades.

He blocked me. Imagine my shock.

Sporkatus
and so black pride unites them in some kind of is-okay pan-African culture...

To summarize, a genuinely shared culture via trade, language families, ethnicity overlaps, systems of government, religion, food staples, and a thousand other little things, is not a culture or core thereoff because shut up, Whitey, and a completely synthetic culture of Blackness at odds with real cultural threads and predicated on blame and hatred of Whitey is entirely legitimate, again because shut up.

Can't imagine how he was supposed to sit there and take your hate-facts and biblioggression like that. You hater, you.

David

He blocked me. Imagine my shock.

So did he block you because you’re a lava stream of racial hatred and unworthy of further discussion, or because he was afraid he might be rumbled as a poseur?

Spiny Norman

Rumbled. One of my favorite "British-isms". It's much better than the more clinical "exposed" used here in the US. I wish I could use it without coming across as, well... a poseur.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

I am severely disappointed, as we didn't get full totality here in my corner of South Flyoverlandia, only about half of our Confederate memorials came to life.

Karen M

a completely synthetic culture of Blackness at odds with real cultural threads and predicated on blame and hatred of Whitey is entirely legitimate, again because shut up.

That.

R. Sherman

Final Eclipse Verdict FWIW: Pretty cool, though not as dark as I was expecting during totality, perhaps because we're at the top of a hill and had a lot of glow from the horizons.

WTP

Not as dark as I expected here in Hiawassee, GA either. Very cool, though. Was expecting more twilight/longer dark conditions based on simulator I played with at Time.com. Not that I should be surprised by that.

Daniel Ream

Can't imagine how he was supposed to sit there and take your hate-facts and biblioggression like that. You hater, you.

I have a permanent booth at the Scold-O-Mat now.

Something very similar happened when I pointed out to another FB friend that yes, the Nazis really were socialists and to claim otherwise was disingenuous at best.

The most amusing part of that was that he implied the existence of some sort of mutual agreement whereby I don't comment on his friends' political Facebook posts and he doesn't comment on my friends' political posts. When I pointed out that no such agreement ever existed because I don't care and my other friends are more than capable of defending their beliefs without resorting to hysteria or direct insults...

Well, I think you can guess what happened. (Hint: it rhymes with 'clock')

David

Well, I think you can guess what happened.

So you’re basically Social Death, at least on Facebook.

David

The eclipse got clouded out here but we did still notice the effect, it got EXTREMELY dark, like in tornado weather, for a few minutes. No crickets--I guess they have sense enough to tell the difference between night and an eclipse--and the cicadas kept right on buzzing. There were no birds around so I don't know how they reacted. Likewise flying insects. I forgot to look for ground-dwelling insects.

WJohn

So the eclipse will make white people dark.
And other people will not like them because of their darkness?

Spiny Norman

Artist’s impression of Daniel on Facebook.

Hey! I didn't eat the mousse!

Spiny Norman

We didn't have totality here, something between about 80% to 90%. It only got a bit dim, with a brownish color to the light. Much like sunlight filtered through the smoke of a brush fire (too many of those lately) - except the sky was a deep blue. The light filtered through the leaves on the trees left lots of bright little crescents on the ground.

JML

"The light filtered through the leaves on the trees left lots of bright little crescents on the ground."

Hey I just remembered that effect from the eclipse in Melbourne in 1976. Too cool!

Pete of Perth

Wait till she discovers that only white males landed on the moon... her head will explode

dcardno

My Kansas grandfather had a black dog of the same name, no doubt for no earthly good reason.

Some years ago, we adopted a completely black kitten (like a coal sack - ABSOLUTELY black). We were trying to decide on a name, and I eventually told my wife (in her version of the story - she *told* me) that he was either to be called "Kenya" or "Harlem." We settled on "Kenya" - no matter who came up with the name.

Hal

Anyone catch where George Orr disappeared to? He might have an answer to the quandary . . . .

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon, but the way his fans have turned on him as a result of testimony that is hardly disinterested is decidedly Maoist:

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon, but the way his fans have turned on him as a result of testimony that is hardly disinterested is decidedly Maoist

Given Mr Whedon’s past statements, and his apparent satisfaction with such tactics when aimed at others, on slimmer grounds, I’m finding it hard to muster any great sympathy. And I somehow doubt either he or his former admirers will learn much from this sudden reversal of fortune.

David

What?

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Given Mr Whedon’s past statements, and his apparent satisfaction with such tactics when aimed at others...

Alizee @AlizeeYeezy

Replying to @stillgray

"Damn I accidentally slipped and fell into another vagina, the patriarchy strikes again!" - Whedon, probably.

Richard

I think that there is a secret society dedicated to supporting black people. This secret society heard that there was going to be a solar eclipse and they told their members that move out of the path of the eclipse. Because ... reasons.

You have to admit, that makes just as much sense as Ristroph.

Hal

I’m finding it hard to muster any great sympathy.

Being held responsible, in specific and whatever will turn up in general . . .
