Well the Franks were Germans.

The term "Franci" at that date meant Northern European, including all sorts of German speakers (as it did during the Crusades). It certainly was not synonymous with "French".

Charlemagne was a Frank. He spoke German, his population spoke mostly Germanic languages and his capital was in Germany.
