And so Ms Quintanilla lists some “spiritual practices” in order to enable fellow feminists to cope with the unutterable trauma that is their lives.

But I was told feminism made women strong. :-)

David

But I was told feminism made women strong. :-)

Yes, it’s all terribly liberating and empowering, allegedly. And yet the vast majority of feminist outpouring seems to entail complaining about how everything is crushingly oppressive. From being disagreed with, even politely, to ordering takeaway.

Horace Dunn

If these people were as oppressed and downtrodden as they'd like the world to think, then they'd scarcely have time for this sort of silliness. They'd be too busy struggling with life. They might like to see how much time their sisters in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Cuba etc etc. get to spend on such childish self-indulgence.

I wonder whether anyone's ever told them that?

Karen M

You do have crystals, don’t you? I’m assuming that a phone charger and wall socket will suffice.

Silly white man. We charge them WITH OUR MINDS.

Frank

The phrase “spiritual practices” really is a tell isn't it.

Quentin

Suggesting that they perform their spiritual practices by going to church would be met with "but we're atheiests!" no doubt.

Pst314

“charge your crystals”

Dilithium crystals? he asks innocently,

David

We charge them WITH OUR MINDS.

Ah, of course. It all makes sense now.

MC

Hmmm.... I can't help noticing that all this oily, herby, tree-rubbing self-affirmation is a bit masturbatory.

Still, I don't suppose rubbing one out every now and then will do her any harm and it might take the edge off her nerves.

MC

Good to have Everyday Mentalism back though!

David

all this oily, herby, tree-rubbing self-affirmation is a bit masturbatory.

Knock yourself out.

Elsa Martinelli

Suggesting that they perform their spiritual practices by going to church would be met with "but we're atheists!" no doubt.

Some grandmothers (authentic mestiza abuelas in this case) are more equal than others. Going to church like your white grandmother, that's racist.

Franklin

One suspects that this animistic nonsense is coming from people who could not organize a satisfactory camping trip.

Sam

An apropos confession:

Having an actual strong, independent mother and a loving, capable, but somewhat erratic father I grew up viewing women as equal to the point of interchangeability to men, at least mentally and emotionally. Interaction with women subtly tweaked that view but it held in general.

In recent years, however, I've come to resent women's privilege after a parade of whiny adult children pissed on everyone and told me it's raining. I came to resent women as a group far more than I ever did. In response I've listened to voices I once considered beyond the pale - MRA's, MGTOWs, rock-ribbed tradcons, and basically anybody who wasn't blatantly lying to my face. Contained in these disparate arguments weren't kernels of truth, but boulders of honesty often backed by solid data that explained women's behaviors and the gender interactions far, far better than the mainstream narrative.

It's taken my dogmatic pursuit of individualism to prevent me from becoming a full-blown women hater, given that so many of the counter-arguments to feminist propaganda were borne out by my day-to-day reality. I have to remember that a loud, bitter minority can make it seem like whole groups are poisoned. I have to remind myself not to sink to their level. I have to remember that my mother is the rule and not the exception.

Thanks feminism. Your greed and lazy presumption of power turned an ostensible lifelong ally into a committed opponent, and nearly turned him into the thing you falsely accused him of being. Racial hucksters: take note.

I remember going to a psychic fair several years ago and stopping by a vendor of various quartzes at outrageous prices to window shop. Since I wasn't dressed like the rest of the hippies, and I was frowning a bit at the exorbitant prices[1], the vendor and the customer she was dickering with gave me a dirty look and asked if anything was wrong.

"Yes", I replied. "Look at these. Dynamited from the bones of Mother Earth, scooped up by the basketful by poor migrant workers and shipped here on filthy, smoke-belching trucks. The only things these are charged with are pain and misery. Everyone knows they're useless unless you harvest and attune them yourself."

The customer gave me and the vendor a horrified look and scuttled away. She didn't make a lot of sales that afternoon.

[1] Sometimes you can find a nice rare bit from a vendor who has no idea what they've got. I've picked up a couple of nice little geodes for far cheaper than market price.

David

I came to resent women as a group far more than I ever did.

Exposure to feminists will do that. As I’ve said before, if you arrived from a distant planet and based your estimation of womanhood on the mouthings and behaviour of self-declared feminists, you might reasonably infer that whiny, neurotic narcissism and borderline personalities were typical of the entire gender.

At family gatherings, among nieces and sisters-in-law, it’s nice to be reminded that this is not in fact the case.

Killer Marmot

If this is how people "resist Trump" then he's headed for a second term.

David

I’ve picked up a couple of nice little geodes for far cheaper than market price.

What if one's "ancestral spirituality" included smearing boar fat on your head, lighting it on fire and then aggravating Romans?

Asking for a friend.

Pogonip

You know, if she didn’t keep herself so busy burning herbs mindfully, pestering her ancestors, and dropping Spanish palabras into her prose, she might have time to do something useful.

Have you seen the mass anti-Trump hex on the Internet? Every new moon, I think it is, they all stick pins into Trump dolls at the appointed time. John Greer pointed out that, for several sorcerous reasons, this is guaranteed to backfire, and it looks like he’s right—Trump is busily appointing judges, burrowing his moles into agencies [all presidents do this], and negotiating with Kim Bad Hair. [All presidents do NOT do this.]. I’ll see if I can find the link to the hex.

Pogonip

Here it is.

Ms Quintanilla's lunacy is one good reason why so many young men simply refuse to get a girlfriend or a wife. Very good chance she will turn out to be ... well, another silly girl of the group-think left who is too stupid to make coffee.

Do you know the money that can be made in selling my rock and mineral collection as "healing crystals"???? New religion capitalism is a gold mine! Lotta' money in chakra!

Suggestions include Call On Ancestors – which is to say, the dead – and Burn Herbs Mindfully.

I don't think it's going to work.

bgates

we’re told, emphatically, that we must avoid setting fire to white sage

Many have argued that setting fire to so many white sages is how we got Trump in the first place.

Hal

Suggesting that they perform their spiritual practices by going to church would be met with "but we're atheiests!" no doubt.

They already have one variety of faith, so clearly substituting merely another wouldn't get them anything.

Ditto. Though I suspect you have been having better success with your restraint than I have been lately.

Hal

"Yes", I replied. "Look at these. . . .

Oh, well put.

David

I remember going to a psychic fair several years ago…

I can’t help thinking that sentence needs a little elaboration. Did you stumble across this fair while chasing a rabbit?

Sam Duncan

“Call On Ancestors”

Sure. But disdain their legacy. Trash the institutions they built. Tear down their likenesses. Ignore what they actually wrote down during their lifetimes (oh... say, for example, just off the top of my head, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”), and make up some kumbaya shit in a cloud of herb smoke.

charge your crystals

Commander Vimes walks into a rock shop:

"Do you believe in the healing power of crystals, young man?" snapped the woman, raising the club threateningly.

"What? What healing power?" said Vimes.

The old woman gave him a cracked smile, and dropped the club. "Good," she said. "We like our customers to take their geology seriously."

Burn Herbs Mindfully

I have my suspicions as to *which* herb is most commonly burnt by these people.

pst314

I have my suspicions as to *which* herb is most commonly burnt by these people.

I used to know a lot of those nuts, and although not all of them burned "those" herbs many did.

Bloke in North Dorset

Remember this story from last November?

That feeling when you’re a teaching assistant and in your communications class you play a Jordan Peterson clip about pronouns and freedom of speech, hoping to spur discussion, and you then get reported and hauled in front of faculty and the manager of the university’s Gendered and Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Office for a ritual scolding, during which you’re accused of remaining politically neutral, which is deemed both a “problem” and in itself “threatening,” before being accused of “gender-based violence.”

The teaching assistant in question, Lindsay Shepherd, has, at the time of writing, been allowed to keep her teaching position at Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario, but must now file copies of her lesson plans in advance for vetting and must allow faculty members to sit in on her sessions as and when they wish. Presumably, to head off any further political neutrality

Well, the market has spoken and you'd need to be an SJW not to laugh:

Once again, if you were a sane prospective student or a parent who had saved to send your child to college, it was not obvious that Wilfrid Laurier was best equipped to prepare students for the rigours of working life. Or indeed life, period. Though there are, for the time-being, still some roles for ‘gender-policy enforcement officers’ and the like, the wiser type of parent and offspring is clearly able to recognise that there won’t always be a future for people trained solely for such roles.

Now it has become clear that Wilfrid Laurier’s time in the limelight has also had results precisely like those that have affected the University of Missouri and Evergreen State. New enrolment figures show that while university admission confirmations have risen by 0.3 per cent across Ontario as a whole, at the province’s most notorious university – Wilfrid Laurier – admission confirmations (as of this month) are down 15.2 per cent on this time last year. And first-place choices for Wilfrid Laurier are down 12.5 per cent. As one of the few adults at Wilfrid Laurier – professor David Haskell – wryly put it:

“‘We practice hard-line, leftist indoctrination’ seems to have failed as a marketing strategy.’”

And they're not alone, the University of Missouri has had to lay off staff after parents and their children declined the opportunity to put themselves in to massive debt to play SJW for four years, resulting in staff layoff's.

Clearly, Trump juju is stronger than Quintillana's ancestral spirit juju.

Qualitative research and sand play confirm this finding to the third decimal place.

healing crystals...mass anti-Trump hex on the Internet...

http://theothermccain.com/2017/02/21/feminist-witchcraft-mental-illness-and-the-demonic-dangers-of-the-occult/

The totalitarian can never be appeased. If you give Hitler the Sudetenland today, next he will demand the rest of Czechoslovakia, and after that, he’ll begin threatening Poland. Likewise with feminists — grant them everything they demand today, and tomorrow they will return with a new list of demands. Feminists have an appetite for power that is ultimately insatiable...

What does feminism share with the occult? Both are about seeking power. Study the life of Aleister Crowley (or Madame Blavatsky or Marion Zimmer Bradley or any other prominent figure in occult movements) and the pattern is clear. What the occultist craves is a lawless power in defiance of the natural order, for the satisfaction of selfish desire...

What is the basis of authority in a godless society? Power. By power, the rich shall rule the poor and the strong shall rule the weak. The majority can impose its will upon everyone or, by capturing the influential centers of power — in media, in academia, in politics and in the courts — a decadent elite can subvert constitutional law and thereby gain the power to rule by seemingly “democratic” processes....

Pogonip

I must differ with Stacy. Modern feminism disgusts all kinds of people, including occultists. Also, even in his day, when occultism was a fad (everything old is new), Crowley was considered a nut.

Daniel Ream

Did you stumble across this fair while chasing a rabbit?

I used to collect Tarot decks for the artwork. Before the ubiquity of the Internet and the ability to buy whatever occult tat your heart desires thereby, going to fairs was the best way of finding new prints.

Another delightful way of screwing with vendors at psychic fairs is loudly observing the well-known lore that a Tarot deck cannot be bought, it must be given freely by another practitioner or it doesn't work. (Yes, there's a chicken and egg problem there. I never said these people were sensible.)

“Daniel boasts of his collection of magic crystals.”

[picks up a particularly lurid chunk of trapezohedral SiO2 and begins stroking it menacingly] All right, look you.

Pogonip

Ha! I bought mine and it worked at many a Halloween party. Nowadays, when every Goth chick has a Tarot deck in her purse, you don’t get to have any fun being the Gypsy.

Daniel, please don’t point that crystal at anyone unless you intend to use it.

Daniel Ream

I was just cleaning it and it went off. Honest.

Pogonip

Is that a crystal in your pocket, or is your etheric double just happy to see me? 👻

When you bought the deck, you DID send in the registration certificate, didn’t you?

Daniel Ream

I did, but I'm not sure I did the turning part right. Which way is widdershins, again?

Sporkatus

Clearly, Trump juju is stronger than Quintillana's ancestral spirit juju.

Ancestral Kekish frog mojo is not to be trifled with.

Pogonip

Widdershins is the other way from deosil.

Back during the W. Bush years, the left like to refer to themselves as the Reality-based Community (I called them the Reality-based Commune). This is not based in reality at all. I thought they were all about science?

I have a deck that was given as a birthday present by one of Thate Greateley Knowledeablee, I have a deck that I bought, I have a set of divination stones that I won in a raffle. Among the three I prolly have the variations covered.

This, in spades.

A female friend yesterday went into meltdown over this post, I quote:

This is not a sound argument. Why are you trivialising this? You’ve never had it done to you? Flimsy argument which berates women for being angry at being assaulted in this way. It is an assault whatever way you look at it. And again you bring it around , like you always do, to those girls being molested by Asian men. Why? Do you think white middle class women don’t care about them? I was pretty much outraged along with everyone else. What are you worried about-upskirting is not something you do, it is not going to infringe on your rights to take a picture unbeknownst to the girl- you don’t do it. It is absolutely unacceptable that men do this and can get away with it- however I do feel that it does need to be scrutinised properly if it is going to be a criminal offence.

Tim, I don’t want to think of you in a bad way, but this is a misogynist talking. Your views are so anti women - it’s upsetting. You seem so reasonable and normal. I’m afraid that living in backward countries has made you a bit backward. Your views are antiquated and offensive

Paris is backward apparently. Who knew? This was later followed with Why do you hate women so much? The trouble is my friend is a middle class teacher, i.e. a government employee who has lived her entire life in north London and has no idea what the rest of the world is like. She keeps telling me “times have changed” and I need to get with this new program as if her opinions are universal, rather than a rather narrow cult practiced by the relatively wealthy middle classes in a few English-speaking cities. There’s no small amount of hubris on display here, as if upending social norms can only have happy outcomes. And note my having lived and worked in several different countries makes my own views narrower, apparently.

David

I'm confused. When asked to respect the ancestors of the land you stand on should I respect the British who created the empire, the Normans who conquered Normandy and then the Saxons; other Vikings who raped and pillaged the Saxons; the Saxons who conquered the Romanised Britons; or the Romans themselves; or leaping back, the ancient Britons who killed off all the Neanderthals. I mean, if I respect them all it gets rather confusing and if I respect one then how can I be sure they are free of sin.

I need a definitive answer because I don't want people to think I'm indulging in "woo".

PiperPaul

"a rather narrow cult"

Ah, yes. "Cult" is the latest media-amplified accusation from the left towards Trump supporters (AKA anyone who questions the left's hysteria and hypocrisy).

So. A group of people who will do a 180 overnight on major issues if their cultural leaders change their minds are calling others who believe in traditional values members of a cult.

jabrwok

When asked to respect the ancestors of the land you stand on

It means you should revere the memories and legacy of Gondwanaland and Pangaea.

Burnsie

I'm confused.

Simple: no white, Jewish, or Christian ancestral spirits need apply.

And don't even get me started on the ectoplasmic patriarchy.

WTP

Ah, yes. "Cult" is the latest media-amplified accusation from the left towards Trump supporters (AKA anyone who questions the left's hysteria and hypocrisy).

It’s not just coming from the left. The (nominally?) rightist #NeverTrump crowd uses that epithet as well. Amongst many others.

WTP

I'm confused. When asked to respect the ancestors of the land you stand on should I respect the British who created the empire, the Normans who conquered Normandy and then the Saxons; other Vikings who raped and pillaged the Saxons; the Saxons who conquered the Romanised Britons; or the Romans themselves; or leaping back, the ancient Britons who killed off all the Neanderthals. This. This is why real estate is a very, very different kind of property than anything else in a free market society. But try explaining that to people on the left or the right and your whole weekend is shot.

Pogonip

Re the upskirting, the problem is people don’t think these things through in advance. What would I do if—? Here, the obvious answer is to snatch the phone, as she did, and then crush it underfoot, if it’s one of the flimsy ones, or drop it in the nearest water if it’s one of the sturdy ones. What’s he going to do, complain to the cop? “Officer, she destroyed my phone when I tried to take a picture up her skirt!”

Pogonip

An even easier, if less fun, way to foil the upskirters would be to wear shorts or pants to the festival.

jabrwok

An even easier, if less fun, way to foil the upskirters would be to wear shorts or pants to the festival.

There you go, slut shaming and blaming the victims! Hater!

Don't you know that unless women are free to walk around naked in public, pleasuring themselves for all to see, without fear of subjection to the Masculine Gaze then we're all living, LITERALLY, in Hitler's USSR?!

Fred the Fourth

Tim, buried in her screed your female friend apparently agreed with the MP blocking the private bill. She says if it's to be a criminal offense then it needs to be "scrutinized properly" i.e. handled in normal order.
Is she confused, or am i?

Governor Squid

The (nominally?) rightist #NeverTrump crowd uses that epithet as well.

When one of the zealots insists loudly and at length that some random outrageous act is all part of the Grand Plan (never mind that it contradicts the Outrageous Act of four hours ago), and that I'm simply too thick to understand the machinations of the N-dimensional Chess Grandmaster, what term am I supposed to use, if Cultist is off the menu?

WTP

Which zealots? jk...crazy is as crazy does. It doesn't need a plan. It just needs to work. jk again...Both the #NT hair-on-fire from the right and the n-dimensional-chess (presumably from the right) perceptions stem from the same highly logical misconception that plans for the planny-plan-plan are the road to success. The guy is surfing. Granted, this approach won't work forever. But this horribly complicated edifice that "smart" people impose upon society/societies over decades and decades don't work either. The whole s*house has to come down at some point. Better sooner than later. And we are looooong overdue for a correction to the "smart set". Chaos is a God who must be acknowledged/saluted once in a while in order to keep his wrath at bay.

Spiny Norman

Pogonip,

Here, the obvious answer is to snatch the phone, as she did, and then crush it underfoot, if it’s one of the flimsy ones, or drop it in the nearest water if it’s one of the sturdy ones. What’s he going to do, complain to the cop?

That's what I would expect an emotionally-stable, self-confident woman to do. Barring that, it used to be that fathers, brothers, boyfriends or husbands would usually make damn sure the perv never thought of trying that stunt again.

Daniel Ream

Barring that, it used to be that fathers, brothers, boyfriends or husbands

...none of which are ever in evidence whenever one of these strong independent women comes to our attention, I'll note.

Hippogryph

With respect to the ineffectiveness of purchased Tarot decks, I have a solution. Straw purchases! Just pay some other 'practicioner' to buy the deck, then they will 'gift' it to you.

But watch out for the ATF (Astrology, Tarot and Fortune-telling) agents!
