26.3 billion robocalls were made to American phones in 2018. That’s up 46 percent from 2017’s total of 18 billion.

I had to get rid of my land line because of these bastards and now I'm getting them on my mobile nearly every day.

David

I had to get rid of my land line because of these bastards and now I’m getting them on my mobile nearly every day.

Yes, we also ditched the landline some years ago because of what amounted to a kind of automated low-level harassment. There are only so many times you can be told that you were involved in an accident that didn’t actually happen before feeling you’re being gaslighted. I remember dutifully ploughing through recorded messages in case at least one of them was from a human being.

Most of the spammers now get blocked automatically on my mobile, though a few get through, maybe one a week. While blocking each new attempt to convince me that I’ve been in some mythical traffic accident, I keep wondering what happens to all of the numbers used by spammers. There must be a vast and ever-growing list of numbers that can never again be used by individuals or any legitimate business because they’ve been flagged as spam and so no-one will ever take their calls.

news from the world of powerlifting

Well done to USA Powerlifting for standing up to the tranny madness.

I see the gender-befuddled powerlifter has won support from Rep. Ilhan Omar; I wonder what the Koran or the Imams have to say about gender mentalism? Or maybe Rep Omar only really cares about the Jew-hating bits of her religion...

The Sage

@MC - In Iran gays get a sex-change rather than a rooftop, so the Imams might be on board with this.

26.3 billion robocalls were made to American phones in 2018.

It is not as bad as it seems, I got half of those, so the rest spread over the other 300 million cell phones isn't quite so bad.

There are two types of spam calls though, the pure robo with some recorded message, and the ones with a person at the other end. For the latter, if you have the time and inclination, good sport can be had by screwing with the idiot on the other end.

1) Answer with an Indian (Bombay, not Ft. Apache) accent;
2) Answer as some real company's customer service;
3) Answer as a fictional law firm (store, restaurant);
4) If they ask for a specific person, keep screwing up the person's name (Is David Thompson there ? You want Tom Davidson ? Tom Davis ? etc.) - this can be coupled with "transferring" the call to Tom Davis, who transfers the call, etc.;
5) Play dumb ("We are calling about your student loans" You all are gonna gimme money to go to school ? Also works with credit cards);
6) Invent your own - the first three usually get you an instant hang up, and number 4 actually got me off a call list.

... “racism, white supremacy,” and “fatphobia.”

Translated to Normalese, "Let's see if our basic load of crap sticks to the wall this time", seeing as how a) anyone can compete among their own actual sex, b) the guy whining is a white dude.

The myth that trans women have a "direct advantage" is not supported by medical science...

My all time favorite Congressional dumbnity is Hank Johnson fearing Guam would tip over is more Marines were stationed there, but this rocket surgeon looks like she may steal the crown.

David

It is not as bad as it seems, I got half of those,

Heh. It occurs to me that if it were announced that the people responsible for robocalling were to be hanged on live television, this measure would be quite popular, and widely watched.

David

Can’t recall where I found this, but I feel an urge to share it.

Runcie Balspune

I have often wondered about this.

(a) set up a "telephone answering company", register it.
(b) advertise rates of £500/hour or part hour thereof to "answer telephone".
(c) when called, ask for an invoice address.
(d) if no response, then pursue through small claims court.
(e) profit

If at least you can get a company name, and therefore a director or shareholder, then dox it, or perhaps pay them a visit.

David

if no response, then pursue through small claims court.

Or televised hanging. Let’s not forget that option.

Jen

Bill de Haan

female counterparts due to natural anatomic privileges

How can this be possible when gender is a spectrum, which individuals are free to choose from?

Muscle mass and bone density are merely social constructs, we've been assured.

Runcie Balspune

The small claims court is primarily to oblige the telephony company to state the name and address of the registered owner of the calling number, or whoever spoofed it.

Once you have a name, then you can buy some rope ...

David

LOL

I don’t often watch the History Channel, but when browsing the listings, it’s usually Storage Wars, Ancient Aliens or Hitler’s Deadly Something Or Other. And frankly, when you’ve already seen Hitler’s Jurassic Monsters over on National Geographic, there’s not much that can follow that.

Bill de Haan

26.3 billion robocalls were made to American phones in 2018. That’s up 46 percent from 2017’s total of 18 billion.

I have, for probably the last 20 years, not answered my phone, either landline or cell, unless I recognized the number.

My phones are essentially outbound calling devices only, at this point. Unless I recognize the caller, it goes straight to voice mail.

On my cell, my default ringtone is silence (my watch vibrates). I don't know you? Leave a message.

The only real annoyance is that when I'm home during the day, my phone will ring 10-15 times, and go straight to voice mail, with no message being left. A far cry from the 1960s, when the kids used to race to the phone to make sure nobody missed a call...

Jeff Guinn

Among the myriad problems with this worldview is that individual circumstances are boiled away… Vast abstract categories of human beings are swept up into notions of collective guilt ...

Those Kulacks aren't going to kill themselves.

Jonathan

Hitler’s Jurassic Monsters

I actually watched that. It was quite cool - mainly because I fantasised about Ramblers being preyed upon by Dire wolves.

I'm not a bad person.....

David

Further to the first item above, this interview with Heather Mac Donald isn’t entirely unrelated.

Sam Duncan

“Traditionally, a person is only supposed to be responsible for the wrongs he or she committed against a specific person. If Person A does something terrible entirely unbeknownst to Person B, it is unjust to hold Person B accountable solely because of the colour of his skin. It’s even more grotesque to hold Person B accountable for the things done by Person A if Person A lived 300 years ago.”

Precisely what I've always said. “Social justice” isn't the traditional principles of justice applied, in some vague but unobjectionable manner, to the social sphere as a whole; it's a complete inversion of justice.

And it scares me that the Conservative and Unionist Party has taken to throwing the term around. There's no excuse. Either they don't know what it means - in which case, they're idiots who don't deserve to be elected to Parliament - or they do, and British conservatism is dead.

“For instance, the Green party platform on social justice is nearly 60 pages (and 17,000 words) long. Among its planks: ... sovereignty for Hawaii”

When was Hawaii demoted to Territory? The 50 states are sovereign.

Spiny Norman

I keep wondering what happens to all of the numbers used by spammers.

Here in the US, they are invariably spoofed numbers of real people. I once was irritated enough call it back and, getting no answer, tracked it to an individual in Arkansas, and whose number that was listed as "no longer in service". The fellow must have changed his number because I likely wasn't the first to call him to complain.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

When was Hawaii demoted to Territory? The 50 states are sovereign.

It is about letting Hawaii become its own country again, see here.

It is a moot point, though, all anyone would have to do to retake the place is blockade the Spam and toilet paper ships, though they can keep Oahu, it is basically Newark with a couple nice beaches and palm trees.

answer with " hello this is the xyz police service fraud hot line"

Sam Duncan

“it is basically Newark with a couple nice beaches and palm trees.”

That's what fascinates me about the place (and why I wonder what the Hawaiian nationalists are moaning about): all the British and French territories (current and former) in the Pacific are ramshackle little backwaters, but Hawaii is America. Okay, so Oahu might only be Newark-in-the-Sun, but Newark is still vastly more prosperous than Funafuti or Adamstown.

(Then again, I say “all”, but we did have Hong Kong. And turned it over to the Commies.)

"How can this be possible when gender is a spectrum?"

So, how can one direct a collimated beam of kooks through a gender spectrometer?

jabrwok

"How do trans folks harm you bigot?"

Long answer:
“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
― Theodore Dalrymple

Short answer: "How many fingers am I hold up Winston?"

jabrwok

How many fingers am I hold up Winston?

"holdING", dammit! And I hit "preview" even!

WTP

The fellow must have changed his number because I likely wasn't the first to call him to complain.

Here in the US (FL) they've taken to spoofing local NXX (NPA-NXX-9999) numbers so it looks like the call is coming from someone from your area, thus more likely to be presumed to be someone you might know. I've gotten calls back from a couple of very irritated females demanding to know why I called them. An ex-coworker had a "lady" get very upset with him, refusing to believe that his number was being used to spoof her. From her language and aggressive attitude, she sounded to him like someone who might be criminally connected which worried him for a bit.

pst314

Here in the US, they are invariably spoofed numbers of real people.

Which is why I do not block those numbers.

The root of the problem is in the design of the phone system, which allows spoofing.

WTP

Then again, I say “all”, but we did have Hong Kong. And turned it over to the Commies.

No. No no no no no no no. You misunderstand. I recall specifically back in the late 1990's when the end of the former treaty was approaching and the negotiations were being made for a new one that there was absolutely nothing to fear. The grown ups in the room assured us that Hong Kong would continue to function with the exact same freedoms and such as it had under the governance of the UK for the previous century. No. You're just wrong there. You must watch Faux News or listen to Alex Jones or stuff like that.

Steve E

answer with " hello this is the xyz police service fraud hot line"

They'd never believe it. The cops are too busy hassling people for misgendering people or otherwise generating revenue for the state with speed traps and cameras. Stopping telephone fraud might involve some actual police work.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

...I wonder what the Hawaiian nationalists are moaning about...

To be fair, Oahu has been ruined by over development, Maui by dope smokers and celebrities, and when jerks like Zuckerberg who buy over a square mile of prime Kauai and build big walls blocking the view and try to keep people off the beach*, I can see point of the genuine natives** being cheesed, and it is why The Big Island has strict policies regarding development, but without all the 'Merkan, Chinese, Japanese, other foreign investment, it would indeed be another backwater.

*The law says the beaches are public to the high water line, unfortunately for him.
**There are, generalizing a bit, three tiers of people 1) Natives of Polynesian descent, actual Hawaiians; 2) kamaaina, basically anyone who got a Hawaiian drivers licence and is thus a "native", and usually infected with smug; 3) Haoles - from ha ole, without breath, meaning originally any foreigner, but often taken just to mean cracker ass mofos. A service member who keeps his Pennsyltucky citizenship is the latter even if if he does three consecutive tours, whereas if you get of the plane and go to the DMV straight away, you are an exalted kamaaina. The place is FUBAR bigly. Kamaaina are also some of the biggest sovereignty shouters.

OK, this is California, in 2019, unless these kids go to Sister Bartholomew's Convent and Holy Wholly Walled Off School for Girls, I am willing to buy they may not have had direct "experience with the male physique", but not willing to buy they didn't know what all it entails.

As part of what the city manager calls a "temporary solution," the city will install a "unisex" shower near the locker rooms at the swim center.

WTP,

Yep, they sure do. I'm in CA, so it's likely a national phenomenon. I once got a robocall from a number that was one digit off from my sister's cell phone number. That was spooky.

Spiny Norman

Farnsworth,

2) kamaaina, basically anyone who got a Hawaiian drivers licence and is thus a "native", and usually infected with smug; ... Kamaaina are also some of the biggest sovereignty shouters.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Those are the ones who were ruthlessly mocked on South Park, weren't they?

Yep, that was spot on, though to be clear they need to be differentiated from kamaaina who are people other than of Polynesian descent who where born on the islands (some brand of Asian, GI offspring, etc.). It is all very caste like at times, but the drivers license kamaaina are standouts in being obnoxious - sort of like a recent Moslem convert who has to join ISIS...

NTSOG

It is a regular daily occurrence that we get about three calls from unknown numbers - the digits always vary and seem to come from different States of Australia. Invariably the accent of the person is from the Sub-continent. The callers claim to be calling on behalf of Telstra, the tax office, Microsoft, or a government rebate for solar panels and so on. When I hear a man with an Indian accent claiming to be Sean O'Reilly calling from the local suburb of Sunshine I have to laugh. My standard response to all these calls is to answer in German. Many of those calling keep on reciting their script even as I question them. One or two have eventually asked me what language I am speaking and one realised I was taking the piss and told me I was a mother-f***er as he hung up.

Spiny Norman

BTW, my next door neighbor (his son lives there, actually, and he uses the garage as storage) has been on Storage Wars a number of times (as an extra in the background). He actually does buy abandoned storage units, and he and the other "extras" are there waiting for the staged teevee show bidders to finish filming so they can bid on the real units.

but we did have Hong Kong. And turned it over to the Commies.

Really? You think Britain "turned it over"?

The lease ran out*, and it was not renewed. It was going back -- short of Britain starting another war to extend the lease -- whether they liked it or not. I was impressed the Chinese made as many concessions as they did, given they didn't have to make any and it would revert to them.

(*Technically the New Territories only, but without them ownership of the inner city was never possible. A simple wall to prevent workers going into the city and turning off the water would have been all it took.)

Matt

The unknown calls I've been getting lately have been single-ring calls from all over the place -- lately it's been Latvia, when it's identified at all. Apparently it's a scam to entice you to call back and bill you by the minute while you try to figure out what's going on.

Translated to Normalese, “Let’s see if our basic load of crap sticks to the wall this time”,

Absolutely. For some people, dishonesty is like breathing. I wonder if activists, including JayCee Cooper, ever pause to consider how their own preposterous overreach can actually harm the cause of acceptance that they claim to champion.

JayCee Cooper’s hyperbolical indignation - “transphobia… racism, white supremacy,” etc - is supposedly due to the unfairness of excluding biological men from women’s powerlifting. The umbrage seems just a tad perverse, and self-serving, given that JayCee Cooper, a biological man, and a newcomer to the sport, can outperform the best female powerlifters who’ve been training for years. Greater bone size and density, and higher muscle mass, and higher rates of oxygen transfer, and all the rest, will tend to do that. It’s rather like me complaining that people aren’t generally impressed when I defeat small children in arm-wrestling competitions. I exaggerate, of course; but not unforgivably.

Still, it’s quite funny to see feminists defending transgender powerlifting, a move that could conceivably result in a women’s sport in which no actual women can ever prevail.

MC

Glad this came up, what is it with Hawaii and Spam? Here in Hong Kong we have had a few Hawaiian food places open, which serve chunky sashimi salads and spam-based items. Including what is basically Spam sushi.

Hong Kong is itself bizarrely fond of Spam so I wasn't sure if it was also a Hawaiian thing...

Thon Brocket
It was going back -- short of Britain starting another war to extend the lease.

Yup. cf. The Goa Affair of 1961. The Indian tanks simply cruised through the border posts one fine morning, and the Portuguese were on their way back to Lisbon.

The ChiComs could have done that at any time, and the Brits knew it. What actually happened was probably the best outcome available.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Glad this came up, what is it with Hawaii and Spam?

It goes back to WWII, fresh meat was hard to get to the islands, but Spam was not an issue because it requires no refrigeration and has a half life between that of plutonium and a Hostess Twinkie™. This is not a photoshop, it is a Spam aisle of a store in Kailua (town on the windward side of Oahu). Because it was the most readily available meat, the locals incorporated it into traditional recipes, and invented new ones.

Hawaii is also one of the few places you can find every type of Spam, so you can have many flavors of Spam musubi.

Steven Crowder pitted his producer, Not Gay Jared and one of his writers, Courtney the powerlifter, against each other in an arm wrestling match.

David

Heh. I hadn’t seen that.

And again, there’s something rather odd about woke-lings and feminists arguing for a change of rules in women’s sports, the likely result of which would be female athletes almost always coming second to a biological man.

Not really. As has been noted they were running out of things that they could (legitimately) bitch about. Especially things that they could get people to pay them to bitch about. Once these new rules are set, they’ll have new grist for future articles.

To push for transgender inclusion in heavily strength-dependent sports, like powerlifting, results in absurdity. It’s a “there-are-four-lights” moment. Which doesn’t seem likely to further the wider cause of transgender acceptance.

Opening paragraph with badass babe, looking convincing so far: Army Staff Sgt. Jackelyn Walker is snapping left jabs at Pfc. Greg Langarica's head. She doesn't like his smirk.

Do you have two tens for a five? Quiet and seemingly frail at 116 pounds, she seemed out of place among male fighters with bulging biceps. But she won her first few fights, which by luck of the draw were all against other women.

Biology is sexist: A few hours later, Chesser was in the stands, glowering. "We don't have instant adrenaline like males do," she said.

Badass babe wins consolation prize: She was carried out on a stretcher, her eyes rolled back in her head. "I wanted to be the first female champion on the base," she said after she was released from the base hospital. "We can be just as tough as the guys. We can do it." Langarica was magnanimous in victory. He hadn't beaten a woman, he said. "It was a warrior."

Not entirely true. They could have given all the Hong Kongese full British passports (as the Portuguese did in Goa) which would have pissed the Chinese off no end. However, they didn't want a load of dynamic, right wing entrepreneurs coming to their socialist dystopia, so they didn't.

To push for transgender inclusion in heavily strength-dependent sports, like powerlifting, results in absurdity. It’s a “there-are-four-lights” moment. Which doesn’t seem likely to further the wider cause of transgender acceptance.

That.

David

That.

Well, it seems to me that the cause of transgender acceptance requires a certain amount of polite pretending, of not acknowledging certain details, in the name of courtesy. To then push for creating situations in which such pretending becomes vividly ludicrous, seems unwise, indeed insulting to everyone involved. It becomes a kind of gaslighting.

[ Added: ]

It’s one thing to ask for polite acceptance – say, on the street or in the workplace – of someone with gender dysphoria. I’ve no wish to be gratuitously hostile to people with a condition that strikes me as tragic and hellish. It’s something else, however, to create a situation in which the dissonance is so glaring, so impossible to ignore, that the expected politeness becomes an absurd affirmation - an obvious, outright lie – and a corruption of the participants. As when being expected to agree that bone density and muscle mass are somehow irrelevant to powerlifting, or that a six-foot six-adult male has no unfair physical advantages over teenage girls during a game of basketball.

Chester Draws

Because working in an elitist pretend-museum is just like working on the line building Detroit rolling iron, the New Museum pussy hat brigades and soy boys voted to join up with the United Auto Workers.

Wow. That is a lot of vacuous handwaving---the "article" that is.

Fortunately one can get Google to be useful and go look for actual information.

One does quickly find The New Museum’s Staff Is Pushing to Unionize—and Top Leadership Is Not at All Happy About It

The staff of the New Museum has initiated a push to join a union. Last Friday, employees sent a letter to the National Labor Relations board, stating their intent to affiliate with UAW Local 2110, the same union that represents workers at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Columbia University’s graduate students.

Got it.

So, without any of that useless posturing, what is actually happening is that a group of people who shuffle more paperwork than iron are wishing to join another group of people who also shuffle more paperwork than iron.

Well, yes, that does beg the question of Um, shuffling paper, and the United Auto Workers?!?!?!!!!!

'k, fine, a bit more Googlemancy.

In the 1990s, the UAW began to focus on new areas of organizing both geographically (in places like Puerto Rico) and in terms of occupations, with new initiatives among university staff, freelance writers (through the subsidiary National Writers Union) and employees of non-profit organizations, including workers at Mother Jones Magazine and the Sierra Club who are represented by UAW Local 2103.

Which gives us a very easy parallel from elsewhere: Just as NCOs are considered the backbone of the military, between the strictly enlisted and the officers---and never mind which enlisted, being they infantry or POGs---so the unions are basically doing pretty much the the same thing.

Meh.

Absolute, entirely, dog bites man.

Translating hysterical shrieking into actual news is why I tend to skim through rather a variety of headlines when picking out what is actually going on.

Doing such rather simplifies bypassing one individual writer choosing to signal piety rather than report news.

Governor Squid

Okay, Hal. So a bunch of museum workers being represented by the autoworkers isn't absurd at all, because it's happened elsewhere. You've totally persuaded me on this one!

Oh, and thanks again for letting me know about Google, and about military roles, and about the purpose of labor unions, not to mention enlightening me about the phrase "dog bites man," which I swear to God I'd never run across in forty-odd years of reading. To be quite honest, I don't know what we thick rubes would do if we didn't have you to explain basic concepts to us!

While we're at it -- I was looking for a long-winded, circular way of redefining "conservative" so that I would be the only one on Earth who qualified for the label. Do you have any links to material that might help me with this quest?

The best place to begin is by ignoring, but I did find a Venn diagram of union goons (A) and NCOs (B).

Hal

So a bunch of museum workers being represented by the autoworkers isn't absurd at all, because it's happened elsewhere.

Apparently . . . I was wondering about the details m'self, so I looked it up.

From there, Ehn, I could see arguments on the union's part for just staying with the UAW name over time, it is a known identity, rather than having to file all the paperwork all over the place for changing the name to Honking Big Union or something of the sort . . .
