There's nothing more boring than artists trying to shock you.

There’s nothing more boring than artists trying to shock you.

It can be rather wearying. I think it’s the implied condescension.

Ms Ersmark has apparently received grants from various lofty institutions, at home and overseas, including the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee; and yet, judging by her channels on Vimeo (15 followers in six years) and YouTube (one subscriber in five years), her videos seem to be met with indifference, if met at all, at least by the wider public. Presumably, the people obliged to foot the bill for these artistic institutions, coercively, via taxation, are less impressed by genital sprinklings and low-quality footage of underwater lactation.

Was that powdered styrofome? I suppose she appeals to "adolescent males of every age and sex", as The Annals of Improbable Research used to put it.

WTP

Sniffing distance...heh.

In Snow, the artist creates an abstraction of a dreamlike physical and sensual act.

All true, except for the "dreamlike" and "sensual" part. And the "artist" part. And the misspelling of "distraction" stands out, too.
Other than that, fine work.

David

Note that Ms Ersmark describes herself as an “artist and filmmaker,” but shows little obvious enthusiasm for her chosen medium. Despite an extensive (and presumably expensive) education at Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Art, Ms Ersmark’s films aren’t exactly well-made or well-lit. There’s no sense of ambition or finesse. Indeed, they seem pointedly amateurish – as if discernible skill, even competence, were somehow irrelevant or ideologically improper. As if the audience – and the taxpayer – ought to be satisfied with just her ideas, these bare notions.

OTOH, unlike her tovarische in similar endeavors, to her credit she appears to have a respectable level of fitness and hygiene.

For those now engorged with artistic appetite

Has anyone checked her Pornhub followers? I am at work so can't, obviously. Also, I'm not into... whatever that is, so wont.

That.

I think it’s the implied condescension.

If she didn't take herself so seriously she'd have a cute little vimeo channel and probably many more viewers. It's the difference between "We hear and see sugary snow falling and popping on female genitals" and "Watch me powder my freshly shaved beaver." It's all in the marketing. Promises made and promises kept.

Engorged?

Enervated seems more to the point.

We hear and see sugary snow falling and popping on female genitals.

She sprinkled Pop Rocks on her hoo-ha?

I did click Geezer's link to the Rice Krispies commercial - and after watching them pour milk and sprinkle sugar on the cereal - snap, crackle, pop! - I'm kinda hungry for a bowl.

No desire to click her link, though, to see porn shabbily costumed as "art" and paid for by the taxpayer.

Philistine, I am.

You haven't lived until you've seen Frederich Liechtenstein bathe himself in breakfast cereal.

Behold Ye.

Generally this style of artist film bores me to tears. No cuts, no pans, no script - in short, nothing that makes a film a film. The bastard child of conceptualism and Funniest Home Videos.

Geoffrey

I've seen some 'avant garde film', and while those are usually trash as far as actual entertainment goes, they're usually doing something weird that could be akin to an experiment or calibration. Basically, trying out some lighting technique or filter and seeing what reaction it engenders. You could then take the results of these experiments and use them to make something actually enjoyable.

We've gone past avante garde, and just into dada at this point. Anyone trying to pass this off as art should be imprisoned for fraud, or institutionalized for insanity.
