10 Things Every Intersectional Feminist Should Ask On a First Date...

4. What are your thoughts on sex work?...

So this is not really a date, more like a business transaction, I take it.

WTP

I got a lot of questions on that mixup. Was there another 70 years old man who was in for a circumcision and he got botoxed instead? Or did they just fill out the botox form with the wrong code? Did some baby get this guy's botox? If the latter, was it explicitly for religious purposes? WTH is with reporters these days? Surely I'm not alone in wondering about such things.

My thoughts on sex work go like this: A few years ago in Germany IIRC, some kinds of sex work were "normalized". (In this particular case I think it was some sort of "therapeutic" job.) This led to an amusing incident where a dole recipient woman was apparently going to be required to become employed as such, since the law required one to accept legal work if one was able and qualified, or else lose dole benefits. I believe some loophole was "discovered", permitting her to avoid this useful employment.

Excellent!

Morning, all.

Oberlin College appeals,

Or, ‘progressive’ college whose ‘progressive’ staff behaved shamelessly and lied - repeatedly, to a degree that amazed a jury - and who actively encouraged others to behave shamelessly and lie - continues, even now, in the face of overwhelming evidence, to behave shamelessly and lie.

The fantasy bathrooms you’ve always wanted.

The second one is amazing. Is that an escape hatch on the left?

David

Is that an escape hatch on the left?

Heh. I’m not sure what it is. Is it decoration? Storage? And why does it look like a radiator? And it does seem that an escape hatch would be useful, to avoid emerging from the bath only to fall down the immediately adjacent flight of stairs.

Today’s words are hilariously dangerous.

I think the real question is why are you taking under stall pictures in the men's room ?

Tiny frogs: Our horse troughs are populated by hundreds of tadpoles this year. The horses don’t mind as long as I keep the troughs filled with water.

Every morning I count the tiny new frogs which have emerged overnight, climbed up the side to sit on the edge before hopping off, dropping to the ground two feet below, and making their way to the creek 100 feet away. I guess that fewer than 5 in 100 will make it.

pst314

Is that an escape hatch on the left?

There appear to be whirlpool jets in the tub, so I am guessing it is a hatch for access to the machinery.

pst314

Or, ‘progressive’ college whose ‘progressive’ staff behaved shamelessly and lied

Morally, the college deserved a judgement sufficient to bankrupt it, as did various staff.
It's astonishing sickening how many American "progressives" will continue to deny that Oberlin did anything wrong.

Bathrooms: I'll bet building codes were not consulted in these installations.

The carpeting is a nice, elegant touch with the four-poster bath. Downton Abbey-ish.

To put it as mildly as humanly possible, "institution of note".

Or, institutions, institutional, font of western knowledge, bastion of postmodernism, etc. The only remaining question is that of the chicken and the egg: Is this the consequence or the cause of the precipitous decline of civilization.

“BBC News.”

Briefly watched the local news today (something I never do) and they gave as much time to some UK royal brat (Charlotte something?) sticking her tongue out to reporters as they spent on covering the idiot who walked into WalMart with a gun and body armor in the wake of the recent shooting.

This timeline was funny for a while but it's really starting to smell.

Ooh, Farnsworth...per those comments that would be something. A McLaughlin Group of Pat Sajack, James Woods, Kid Rock, Chuck Woolery, and...well if we have to...Scott Baio. Might need some adjustments on the backend but the first three would be interesting. Maybe with Adam Carolla and/or Gregg Gutfeld instead of the latters. Of course there will be cringe, but I'm good with that. Cringe is good. I want more cringe. We need more cringe. Anymore I think I live for cringe.

Jackie Tran's TERF War...

David

Are you a racist?

It goes without saying chappie is an educator.

Somewhat related:

Immigration may be the most difficult of these issues because it is also an argument over whether or not one side of the debate should be authorised to bring in political reinforcements, in the form of the immigrants themselves. We can now see that those who desire more open borders enjoy an intellectual advantage, too: the ability to block discussion. For, once migration is considered a non-negotiable right, what end can it serve to start talking about costs and benefits, or simple facts?

Also, “Narratives of Europe’s enrichment by migration are post facto rationalisations for something that Europe is undergoing, not choosing.”

David

Also needless to say, our educator chappie has form.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Aside from apparently not knowing that the US&A didn't invent slavery and that it still goes on today but not in the US&A, he seems a little short on knowledge of current events.

Not from those guys, but for $99-$135 your dreams are answered in baby to Super XL.

Controlled by REMOTE or APP, they wag, tremble, stand up, and move naturally

For once the west is miles ahead of the Japanese in artificial tail technology.

David

he seems a little short on knowledge of current events.

Given the self-satisfied ignorance of educator chappie - or his malign perversity - I’m guessing he doesn’t live in a neighbourhood rapidly being enlivened with Congolese and Somali borra gangs, whose social skills, and machetes, are so much in the news here.

We’ve been here before, of course.

David

We’ll give Dr Kotsko a thread of his own, I think.

I’ll copy Mr Muldoon’s subsequent comment over to the new thread.

Well, I finally got round to watching 'Avengers:Endgame'.

Three hours I'll never get back.

Also: Thanos did nothing wrong.

David

Three hours I’ll never get back.

I found it decidedly underwhelming. There are good bits, quite a few of them, but overall it feels bloated, inelegant, and the pacing is just bad. It has none of the momentum or economy of Infinity War.

The reliance on time-travel was, I think, a poor decision. It allows for lots of self-congratulatory fan service and revisiting famous scenes from earlier films, but the whole ‘time heist’ second act is convoluted, quite boring and internally incoherent. It also rather undercuts the payoff – as illustrated by the scene in which a grieving Wanda faces off against past-version-of-Thanos, only to be told that he has no idea who she is or why she’s so miffed. Defeating a villain who hasn’t yet done the personally devastating thing for which you want revenge is a little unsatisfying, dramatically. It’s veering towards ‘killing baby Hitler’ territory.

Also, past-version-of-Thanos is nowhere near as interesting as his ‘present’ self.

Spiny Norman

the whole ‘time heist’ second act

I haven't seen the film (tbh, haven't watched any of the comic-book-superhero flicks since Iron Man), but is it anything like the premise of Terry Gilliam's wonderfully goofy Time Bandits?

David

is it anything like the premise of Terry Gilliam’s wonderfully goofy Time Bandits?

I can’t remember the plot particulars of Time Bandits, so I can’t say. Though I do remember enjoying it as a wee seedling.

David

I haven’t seen the film

It’s the old problem of two-parters – following a good cliff-hanger with a fairly meh resolution.

Infinity War juggled the various characters, tones and plotlines with surprising efficiency and while keeping a sense of narrative momentum, which was quite a feat. Given the scale of the thing and number of elements that had to be positioned, the film had an unexpected economy. But Endgame feels much more laboured. The pacing and structure aren’t strong enough, which robs the film of focus and urgency. It feels very long, it doesn’t flow particularly well, the basic time-travel premise is unsatisfying, and details that were teased at the end of Infinity War - for instance, Soul World, the orange landscape where post-snap Thanos sees young Gamora, who asks what his triumph cost him - are simply abandoned.

It’s as ambitious as Infinity War, in its way, but very much the lesser film.

Exactly. Though the guy laughing...well...

Jonathan

... following a good cliff-hanger with a fairly meh resolution.

Lots of crash, bang, wallop but the story just felt forced; as if the writers were told to bring an end to the current Avengers and hand over the series to the new 'diverse' Avengers no matter what.
