Morning, all.

I'm tired of all this diet-shaming. Some people just have unique nutritional needs. Others just have refined palates that make it excruciating to consume anything except some tender, succulent long veal.

A new Cornell University study reveals that some artificial intelligence systems created by universities to suppress free speech by conservatives accidentally suppresses free speech by minorities. Programmers are working around the clock to fix this glitch.

Oh, admit it, it is your own Frankenstein's monster. You have created here such a cornucopia of crazy that we mere mortals who do not have a dedicated army of henchlesbians to tabulate and cross reference in a CRAY (how appropriate) mainframe all the links are bound to miss some on occasion.

Meanwhile, placing cochlear implants in babies is an act of violence. They can't consent, you see.

In light of these shocking oversights, I’ve had the seats here fitted with biometric arse-cheek recognition, so I can monitor attendance. And if necessary, assist the authorities with their enquiries.

It also authorises debit card payments.

That is awesome - and I say that as someone who crochets on occasion.

Farnsworth,

I love that costume. I made a plague doctor's mask for one of the twins a couple of years ago. They're too old to trick-or-treat (just turned 17) but they love to dress up and stand out front as part of the decoration and scare the hordes of candy seekers. Not too many are familiar with the plague doctor but in a long, medieval, hooded cape, it is a startling look. The other twin got himself a WWI style gas mask and that's very eerie, too.

Not at all ironically, this New Yorker writer's op-ed was in the New York Times.

The Big Apple may be the City That Never Sleeps, but if these two august publications have their way, it could also be on the way to becoming the City That Never Over-Censors.

I used to work for a major multinational electronics manufacturer that subcontracted from Apple and believe me when I tell you he was working in luxury. iPhone 6s and 7 is after Apple cleaned up their act after the subcontractor slave labour scandal was exposed.

Darleen

As Glenn Reynolds would say, "Faster, please."

WTP

Undercover, eh? Was he trying to find the guy who thought this was a good idea?

Well, that design was stunningly stupid. OK, I'm sure I am grossly ignorant in this regard, but how the living f does a design like that, assuming this video itself isn't a troll/click bait, ever get into production? I'm certainly not qualified as a hardware design engineer, but WTSF? Why bother with putting that fan in at all?

And while we're on the subject, and I'm sure I'll catch sh*t for this as an "engineer" but this "heat sink" thing has always bothered me and I'm wondering if that terminology isn't the root of this problem. If the manifold device or WTF it's called beside "heat sink" wasn't called a "heat sink" but more properly (to my half-drunk yet still ignorant ass) a radiator, would this problem have occurred? Perhaps, and yes I'm reaching here, maybe some dumbass who designed the device in this video thought that the "heat sink" had a drain somewheres. Of course, again, this whole thing could be a troll but I've always hared that term, "heat sink". OK, I'll shut up now.

WTP

hared = hated. Obviously. Or not.

pst314

I've always hated that term, "heat sink"

The term is generations old, so I have no idea how it originated.

WTP

The term is generations old

The Guardian strikes again...

Ngaree Blow "...a Yorta-Yorta, Noonuccal, Goreng Goreng woman and doctor", informs us now is the time to disrupt the colonialist model of healthcare, because it "...fails to cater our peoples’ values and results in many people not receiving the care they need."

First Peoples are the antithesis of colonial; we are inherently disruptive to how the healthcare system (and many other systems in fact) operate in Australia. Our disruption has historically been, and continues to be, rejected by the mainstream. Our unique lens, which views health as holistic and all-encompassing, has often been ignored or worse, considered inferior, as evidenced by a lack of traditional practices in these services.

It could just be me, but that whole dying at 35 thing might have something to do with it.

One exemplary example is from Adelaide, where one hospital provides traditional healers, known as Ngangkari, to patients, so that both methods of healing are delivered within the same service.

"Appendicitis, no, an operation would not cater to our values, fetch my didgeridoo and some wombat liver, stat !"

We are seeing Western medicine recognise its limitations...

Really ? That's news to this gentleman.

Nigel

now is the time to disrupt the colonialist model of healthcare

Where did she get the disrupting models jargon? Did she have The Structure of Scientific Revolutions on a reading list, or has it filtered into her domain from business gurus? Disrupt, like subvert, is an edgy who-whom word, flattering to the would-be disrupters, and suggesting that the disruptees have it coming. And it raises the obvious question - surely the aboriginal model of healthcare got well and truly disrupted by the colonialist models of Joseph Lister and Louis Pasteur?

If you take away the spice of authentic ethnic remedies, which should be good for a few grants and conference gigs, what she's advocating is public health and preventative medicine. Which we already have, and didn't need any help from aborigines to invent. Give us some credit, lady - we might be stale and pale but we have our own indigenous, holistic wisdom. We never thought that a pill could be invented to replace country doctors and district nurses dispensing the traditional shamanic remedy of a cup of tea and a chat, applying holistic techniques like making sure old people stay warm in winter, and being culturally sensitive in the way they ask husbands to stop beating their wives. And our culture is already on the job of seeking syntheses between mechanistic and humanistic models of medicine - we've been making Hollywood movies on that theme for a century.

Lady Cutekitten of Lolcat

David, I too have caught a cold. This seems highly suspicious.

***mumble grumble grumble Jenkins’s ear grumble grumble grumble***

pst314

We never thought that a pill could be invented to replace country doctors and district nurses dispensing the traditional shamanic remedy of a cup of tea and a chat, applying holistic techniques like making sure old people stay warm in winter...

These leftists and indigenous activists tend to be appallingly racist. Funny, that.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

...what she's advocating is public health and preventative medicine.

It only seems that way.

One exemplary example is from Adelaide, where one hospital provides traditional healers, known as Ngangkari, to patients...
A little more on these Ngangkari chaps (or chapettes, as the case may be).
Ngangkari use traditional natural medicines to cure ailments, which is similar to the manner western medicine works but without medicines made in a lab. Their work also involves massage and connection techniques that are less understood by western health workers. And when traditional healers talk about putting a persons spirit back in place, western health workers are often left feeling clueless.

In other words a touch of voodoo mixed with shamanism, and I think by "left feeling clueless", the author meant "gobsmacked by the flummery".

Getting back to the public health/preventive medicine aspect...

First Peoples’ unique worldview and practice of health for the last 40-plus years (or 60,000-plus years if we’re acknowledging the traditional healthcare provided long before this)...We need to see a transition from outdated approaches to health, such as those that only focus on the disease or illness, towards an approach that incorporates the whole person as well as their family, community and the social, cultural and environmental determinants that affect wellbeing...This holistic method is something that has always been understood and enacted in healthcare by First Peoples, not just in Australia, but around the world.

That is some restaurant grade conceit right there.

If anyone really believes that some witch doctor medicine man Indigenous Healthcare Provider, right before pounding down a snootfull of peyote or other substance to get in touch with the Great Spirits before taking a sharp flint to trepan some poor sods skull or chant and wave smoke to let the evil spirits out took the time to take a family and social history, and see if maybe the tribe upstream was burning elephant dung at the wrong phase of the moon was a factor, I have a bridge over the Torres Straight to sell.

what?

pst314

First Peoples’ unique worldview...

We should not tolerate that smarmy language: When it is used we should challenge it, pointing out the archaeological evidence that these were not the first to inhabit the continent, that the previous inhabitants "mysteriously" disappeared, and that these aboriginal peoples have histories are near constant war, conquest and genocide. And, while we're at it, the creation myths are silly.

Alas, no, and to add insult to injury, they come in citrus, wood, and spice.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Speaking of unrest...

Supporting St. Greta is evidence of yte supremacy !

"Y'all need to ask yourselves why you find it so much easier to hear from white people, regardless of age, when it comes to the violence they have caused across the world," No White Saviours tweeted.

"It is a SYMPTOM of global white supremacy that certain people are HEARD & given a platform, certain people have access to the RESOURCES to be the HEROES that the world will pay attention to."

All they have to do is not be insane, but they can't do that for one lousy minute. The left just needs to have a rumble among themselves, leave the rest of us normal people out, and when they are done beating each other up, maybe we can get back to normal.

BTW, if all y'all ain't from South of the Line of Mason and Dixon, cease and desist with the cultural appropriation of "y'all" or someone will be offended. Oh wait, that would just be some wypipo South of the Line of Mason and Dixon, meh, nevermind.
