So what if 'they' de-transition? Can Penny Dreadful still say she's dated a woman? Or would that be 'violence'?

David

Oh, and while I wait for new seasons of Bosch and The Expanse, I’m also on the lookout for binge-able TV dramas. Recommendations would be appreciated.

Mags

I've done the 'didn't realize it was a date' thing. Only once. :-)

David

I’ve done the ‘didn’t realize it was a date’ thing.

Well, don’t leave us hanging. Don’t worry, we won’t judge.

Not to your face.

NielsR

Pretty sure she's misgendering her exes/culturally appropriating lesbianism there. If they didn't identify as women, they weren't women, isn't that the *cough* logic?

Alternatively, our intrepid reporter won't be able to know her own sexuality until her last ex has died, just in case of deathbed transitions.

David

Speaking of dating dramas.

Craig Mc

Suggestions: The Spy is a new Netflix series. Enjoying it so far.

New Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime soon. The first season was brilliant.

David

Thanks.

Hector Drummond

I'd say there's something wrong with your social circles and/or your dating choies if it turns out that half the men you dated are now going around saying they're women.

But then I don't live in Guardian world.

PiperPaul

Try Goliath on Amazon Prime.

David

Ta.

David

Speaking of TV, I did try Sky’s Catherine the Great recently, but despite the might of Helen Mirren, it never quite hits its mark. The first episode is written and edited so poorly it’s practically incoherent. It gets better, but not by much.

Karl

I assume you've seen Dark, and Vikings?

David

Thanks. I see I’m going to have to start writing a list.

WTP

Oh, I can do Laurie one better. When I was a teenager I dated a lot of women who didn't realize that they even existed. And yet even others who didn't realize that I existed. Or at least existed in the context in which I dated them. Uber woke or TMI? Or perhaps woke isn't the word...No one told me that the 21st century would be so confusing.

Bill de Haan

But then I don't live in Guardian world

I think that in that world, they think there's something wrong when only half the men you dated now think they're women.

It's like the joy of "circumgenderism", where you're physically male and think you're male, too. Well, that means you're male, doesn't it? No, not if you self-identify as trans, and feel that you should have been born female and transitioned to male.

All of the drama, without any doctor's appointments or having to buy a new wardrobe! It's the new fad!

Of course, "real" transgenders are upset by this because, as one said flat out that "I learned that people will literally do anything to get attention or earn oppression points."

Yes, transgenders are now openly admitting that they have a point system for their victimhood mentality.

Everybody wants to be at the back of the bus these days, it seems.

Steve E

Just finished binging Man in the High Tower, a bit facile, but I couldn't stop watching.

David

a bit facile, but I couldn’t stop watching.

I don’t mind trashy TV. For instance, I’ve been watching The Blacklist, even though half the cast are, at best, mediocre and the whole thing jumped the shark a couple of seasons ago.

Bill de Haan

Speaking of dating dramas.

From the comments there:

Oh Noes! Hot young men aren’t prepared to commit themselves legally, financially and emotionally to me and provided for my children

That summarizes the problem many women are complaining about much better than I could have.

I am definitely stealing it.

SumDumGuy

After dating for about a year I give a woman access to the bank account I use for paying bills, we had just moved in so it made some sense. She burned through $3,000 and bounced nearly 700 dollars in checks in a couple of weeks.

Thank goodness I hadn't given her access to my personal account and savings.. she would have ruined me.

Worse, three months after I'd broken up with her she attempted to pay her utilities from my account. I emailed her and told her to replace it by the end of the day or I'd call the cops. She did, and I changed banks.

She had the gall to call me an asshole... because I wouldn't let her steal from me.

David

three months after I’d broken up with her she attempted to pay her utilities from my account.

Looks like SumDumGuy is currently in the lead in our Dating Horror Stories competition. I’d better think of a prize.

Remember, don’t spare those sordid and humiliating details.

Sam

the whole thing jumped the shark a couple of seasons ago

That. My wife simply does not believe me when I tell her that James Spader was once a sex symbol. He and Val Kilmer should start a support group.

Boatswain's Mate

She had the gall to call me an asshole... because I wouldn't let her steal from me.

Sounds like a story well-suited for Reddit's r/choosingbeggars.

David

My wife simply does not believe me when I tell her that James Spader was once a sex symbol.

Oh, it’s hokum and has probably outstayed its welcome, and whatsherface, Megan Boone, can still barely act; but Spader is having fun and some of the criminal entourage are entertaining. And it turns out that’ll do, just about. A sort of low-expectation, low-commitment viewing.

Maureen

David - as requested - just finished watching Unbelievable on Netflix. Having worked with teen foster kids, it was heartbreaking to see what the first rape victim went through and at every turn, adults that should have been protecting her (and often were paid to do so, such as social workers, counselors etc.) didn't. She was thrown into the trash heap by 'friends', foster mums, police, social workers, counsellors, etc. But it does have a 'happy' ending.

Maureen

Also finishing season four of Outlander on Netflix and I realized that Canada is now the go-to country for finding indigenous actors, which probably a good thing. Tantoo Cardinal made an appearance and I was trying to pin point the actor in the Mohawk Chief role. It wasn't Graham Greene (Dancing with Wolves), Gordon Tootoosis is dead, it wasn't Lorne Cardinal from Corner Gas. I had to wait for the credits - it was Tom Jackson (known for playing the chief on North of 60, and his touring Christmas songfest - Huron Christmas).

Plus in the credits it noted the Canadian casting agency, which given that the only non-Scottish/English roles were the indigenous actors, clearly they were mostly recruited from Canadian sources.

Good job guys

Bill de Haan

Worse, three months after I'd broken up with her she attempted to pay her utilities from my account.

A friend had something similar. His girlfriend went up north to care for ailing mother, and help at the bed&breakfast that said mother owned and ran. The mother recovered, but the girlfriend stayed. And stayed.

After several months of this, friend asks girl "are you coming back, or what?". She comes back, borrows his credit card, and buys stuff for the B&B on it, and then heads back up north.

"Well, at least that's over", friend says.

Well, no.

When girlfriend borrowed his credit card, she went into a vendor run by a friend. This was the 1990s, when Visa cards were run though those carbon-copy machines. You put the card in the machine, swiped left to put the vendor imprint on the receipt, and then right to put card imprint. Girlfriend takes a dozen or so empty receipts, skips the vendor imprint, and imprints friend's card.

Three months after they split up, he starts getting charges from the B&B on his credit card. She'd taken the carbon slips with his imprint, and then put it in the B&B's visa imprinter to complete a transaction, charged to him.

When he cancelled the card, and the credit card companies started to investigate the B&B, girlfriend's family of course blamed him for their woes, and said it was a good thing that girlfriend had broken up with him since he was such as asshole.

That was the first official word he'd heard that they were broken up, by the way. Despite the fact that she'd been gone for over six months at this point, and hadn't called or written to him, as far as he knew, they were still officially together.

Not that he was a total fool. He changed the locks when he cancelled his cards. This turned out to be a good thing, as a few months later, his landlord informed him that she had shown up on the landlord's doorstep complaining that her key didn't work any more, and the landlord had to let her in. No news as to whether there was a loading van parked outside to clean out friend's apartment or not, but I have my suspicions.

Sadly, I have another friend who has a similar story, but actually worse than this...

David

just finished watching Unbelievable on Netflix.

Thanks, but I’m not sure I’d enjoy it. Real-world squalor’s not my bag.

Dr Evil

Here's a story. It's a bit controversial. I dated a woman. A real one. We were engaged 6 weeks later. We then (prepare for a shock) got married. Now prepare for another shock.............we are still married to each other after 37 years. Now that's a really amazing story is it not?

Steve E

Electric Dreams is kind of a poor man's Black Mirror. Each episode is stand alone and can be hit or miss but like Mirror the subject matter is twitchy enough to keep interest. I hope there's a second season.

Sam

David, you could try Tall Girl on Netflix if empathizing with the agonizing and frankly terrifying oppression experienced by a middle-class 16 year old American girl who's - sit down for this - 6 foot and 1 inch tall (1.85 EU-approved meters) is your bag.

Sam

Now that's a really amazing story is it not?

Statistically, yes. Congrats.

Bill de Haan

Sounds like a story well-suited for Reddit's r/choosingbeggars.

I hadn't seen that one. My current examplar of entitled douches is the 16 year old who was given a BMW for his 16th birthday, and drove it into a river because he wanted a Jaguar, instead.

I knew he wasn't the most entitled git on the planet, but even I am somewhat disappointed at the amount of competition in that subreddit.

Fatmatt

+1 for Unbelievable. Mindhunter is good. And as an antidote to the 'oh dhaling so adorable Fleabag' I enjoyed Gameface- rough around the edges but it should be...Roisin Conaty.

Just finished Criminal UK and about to embark on Criminal Spain, Criminal France and Criminal Germany to see how the same thing is approached.

We once got a perfectly good Irish Setter from a wealthy family whose teen daughter demanded that they get rid of the Irish Setter and buy her a Labradoodle, which was the fashionable dog that year. Another friend who bred and trained show horses told us about parents who expected a money-back guarantee that their daughter would win the state hunter/jumper title if they bought a horse from her.

No. I don’t actually watch a lot of TV. I’m usually here with you heathens.

Update to Titans Walk Among Us.

One of the "fearless masked heroes," has had a karma moment. Alaa Alsoufi, the hero in the black balaclava and the orange t-shirt in the video has been receiving some unkind feedback on social media to the extent that his family run restaurant in Toronto has felt the need to shut down.

While I do not condone the kind of threatening behaviour the Alsoufi family has experienced, one shouldn't be surprised that if you are going to run with Antifa, threaten 80-year-old women in walkers, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with comrades who call said seniors nazis that you will not be targetted in some way.

What's also interesting, is the Alsoufis arrived in Canada in 2015 from Syria having been sponsored by a Canadian organization. Within two years they were able to open a successful restaurant and become an immigration success story. Their son's "activist" lifestyle seems an odd way of saying thanks. I'd say it's an unusual way to try to fit in to a new country except there are enough of these SJWs in enough places to almost make it appear normal.

David

Their son’s “activist” lifestyle seems an odd way of saying thanks.

That.

pst314

one shouldn't be surprised that if you are going to run with Antifa, threaten 80-year-old women in walkers...

According to the one tweet I saw about this, the family is claiming that although their son was at the demonstration he did not obstruct or threaten the woman and her husband. However, I do not know anything about the truth of their claim because I have not seen video which identifies their son and his activities in that "event". Nonetheless, if you run with Antifa you can be presumed to be a bad guy.

Steve E

According to the one tweet I saw about this...

If you watch the Andy Ngo video in David's post linked to above you will see the woman and her husband are obstructed by 3 people. One of the people, the man in the black balaclava and orange t-shirt has been identified as Alsoufi. He doesn't push or touch anyone in the video but he does obstruct the couple and he does close ranks with the other "protestors" who are screaming "Nazi Scum" as the couple tries to move forward.

There is a video out there showing Alsoufi "protesting" at other Antifa and LGQBT events, mostly unmasked. I can't find the link at the moment.

Lancastrian Oik

“Justified”- yes, definitely.

“True Detective” seasons 1 and 3 are terrific, but give season 2 a swerve.

Mrs. Oik and I enjoyed the adaptation of Justin Cronin’s “The Passage”, a vampire/zombie apocalypse mash-up that took many liberties with the plot of the doorstep-sized trilogy of novels but which turned out to be surprisingly watchable.

Barry Homan

I recommend The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on amazon prime. Yes yes, I like Black Mirror, The Expanse and Goliath, but if you want a change from sci-fi and the weird and bizarre, or crime-filled drama, TMMM is breath of fresh air. The characters and situations are appealing, and the actors know their stuff. I went into the series without knowing a thing about it, and discovered it's very worth watching.

David

Thanks for the suggestions. Will mull.

Bill de Haan

Their son's "activist" lifestyle seems an odd way of saying thanks.

Odd, but sadly not uncommon.

After the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013, many Bostonians were surprised not so much that the bombers were Chechens who had come to the USA for asylum, but their mother, who practically became the poster child for ingratitude.

Not only did she not care for the USA, she refused to work in a business that served men, demanded that the USA increase her welfare payments (for refusing to work), and claims that the USA murdered her sons.

Of course, her mosque was so disgusted with her sons that the imam refused to give the dead one a proper muslim burial, meaning even they thought it was intolerable.

Norm der Ploom

Gomorrah on Netflix.

Lancastrian Oik

Also: “Stranger Things”, “The Boys” and “Narcos”.

All excellent.

David

“The Boys”

Yes, I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. Rather gory and darkly comedic.

Baceseras

David: The Sandhamn Murders -- a Swedish series. Pleasant and undemanding, interspersed with bouts of excitement. The people are mostly attractive, and the tone is light (touching base with dark material just to be up-to-date).

Boatswain's Mate

I recommend trying to find some old showings of "Hee Haw".

Hours upon hours of down-home good corn-pone fun, that.

"The Terror" (series based on the Franklin Expedition) is really good - Prime. Faithful to the novel of the same name by Dan Simmons. Apparently there's a second season, but I know nothing of that, as Season 1 ends where the novel did.

Angela

the agonizing and frankly terrifying oppression experienced by a middle-class 16 year old American girl who's - sit down for this - 6 foot and 1 inch tall

You can make a good romantic comedy based on the premise of a restricted dating pool, like Marilyn Monroe who only wants to marry a millionaire, or Jane Fonda in Tall Story (1960) whose practical solution to her dating problems as a tall girl is to go to where the basketball players are. In the same year, Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton played out the "tall girl eventually finds tall guy" story in Where the Boys Are. The premise seems out of date in 2019, when 6' tall girls aren't unusual, and they're channeled into basketball or volleyball where they have lots of tall friends and access to a tall dating pool.

The other theme in the clips is that the girl is ashamed of being tall, thinks everyone is looking at her, wants to be invisible. You can make a good movie about a young person who gets over that phase. In Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn tells her father that she needed to leave home and go to cookery school to learn "how to live, how to be in the world and of the world, and not just to stand aside and watch". That's a process of getting over yourself, of a self-conscious person figuring out how little space they occupy in the consciousness of other people. It doesn't culminate in a speech to your entire high school about how you're not going to make me feel bad any more. Who is this girl and what sorts of grandiose delusions have been stewing in her head?

Jeff Wood

A while ago, someone put the 1967 "The Italian Job" on Bitchute. They have a search facility.

I saw the film when it came out, and enjoyed it. Decades later, I live in Italy, and now think the movie is bloody marvellous.

Antipholus Papps

Have you watched Ash vs. Evil Dead yet? All 3 seasons are now on Netflix and it’s the grooviest thing I’be ever seen on television.

lotocoti

+1 for The Terror.
Although cannibalism is portrayed in a less than favourable manner.

Daniel Ream

If you enjoy Blacklist for what it is (rather than what it's trying to be), you may like Covert Affairs on Amazon Prime. It's very fluffy and silly but it's not trying to be anything but, and Piper Perabo is actually likable. She does "plucky" well and doesn't strain the Mary Sue tolerance.

Although if I'm honest, I watch it mostly to see just how far they'll push "the ROM and Union Station in Toronto are every location everywhere in the world".

I saw a nod to Justified - well worth the time, and also consider Banshee and The Americans. Westworld is excellent although they do lose the plot a bit in S2.

I'm not even going to chime in on the bad dating stories. It would be like Agassi playing the local high school girls' intramural team.

I'm 6'4", which means I used to attract women like this like moths to a G-class star. There is absolutely a "tall girl slouch" affected by such women, a kind of weird contraposto intended to make them look shorter than they are. It mostly just makes them look like they have scoliosis.

Zionist Overlord is correct, the Medium account was deleted and, with it, the review of Sex Object. Here are two brief passages from her book, however:

"He tells me to leave the cups on the counter and the socks on the floor. He’ll get to them eventually. But I can’t. I don’t believe him. And I can’t write in a house where something is wrong." (p. 174)

"Andrew and I have been going to couple’s therapy, both for my anxiety and because Andrew is so mad at the space the anxiety takes up in our relationship. Again, they target decent, polite, white-collar citizens whom they can be certain won't put up a fight. Time and again we've seen it, from Antifa to BLM to this current crop of enviro-loons. Hell, I see it writ small every day, usually from urban yoof on public transport who'll play their favo(u)rite musical celebration of illiteracy at full volume on their tinny little cellphone speaker, just to get a rise out of the normals. Or who cross against the lights, knowing that drivers will give way.

Neither our Moral Betters nor our Designated Victim Classes seem to realize or care that patience is not infinite, and decency can be driven out of even the most decent person if the incentives are applied hard enough for long enough. It may take a decade or more, but the time is coming when the preachy geography teacher on the airplane gets knocked cold and tied to his seat by a passenger while the flight attendants focus their attention elsewhere. The man on the bus may throw the mobile out the window, to the delight and applause of everybody except the offending yoof. The commuter may decide that it's not worth getting rear-ended in traffic just to keep from hitting a jaywalker.

What's more, juries are going to start acquitting their neighbo(u)rs for these breaches of public norms, because they'll understand the circumstances and sympathize with the defendants. And if juries won't convict, prosecutors won't prosecute, and cops won't bother enforcing the outmoded laws any more.

I don't want to live in that world, and I resent those who insist on pushing us toward that end. I can only console myself knowing that their antics are going to be punished much more severely than any transgression I might commit. Even if I must see to it myself.
