You do know that the entire planet is laughing at the Anglo Saxon world right now?

The UK and the US have lost their fucking minds. Mass hysteria followed by mass insanity.

Fascinating to watch.

Nah.

That's just narcissists being narcissistic, where C-19 has somewhat limited the available camera access and staging areas.

It does rather capture a dynamic I’ve bumped into once or twice.

Ami Horowitz (approaching protester): So you're deeply angry and distressed by the murderous racism that is tearing society apart?
Protester: Yes I am. So angry! So distressed!
Ami Horowitz: I can help with that. A large and authoritative data study strongly suggests that the racism that upsets you so much is not nearly as pronouced as you might think. Isn't that a relief?
Protester: NO! Now I'm even angrier and even more distressed! Go away! Waaaah.

It really is like a kind of mental illness, isn't it?

David

It really is like a kind of mental illness, isn’t it?

Well, I think of it as a kind of role-play, which is to say, dishonest, and hence the imperviousness. We should not overlook the fact that, as Thomas Sowell and others have pointed out, ‘activism’ of this kind, with its mouthed idiocies and hair-trigger protesting, and its invulnerability to factual correction, is a way for charmless, mediocre people to become interesting and statusful, if only among similarly underwhelming types.

MC

It really is like a kind of mental illness, isn't it?

Are they mental or simply a bunch of cunts? Seem pointless to decide. Just like communism and fascism amount to the same thing in practice, so malice and lunacy are equally valid explanations for their behaviour.

Trouble in woke paradise If it wasn't for the crimes the Seattle police chief mentioned, I'd say leave 'em to it for a few months. Just to see how feral it gets.

BTW Seattle police boss lady is foxy!!! Hot blue lives matter.

A few entries down from the Manchester photos on Mick Hartley's blog is this: https://mickhartley.typepad.com/blog/2020/06/no-longer-felt-to-be-an-appropriate-role-model.html

The Weald School in Billingshurst, West Sussex, wrote to parents announcing that it was abandoning plans to use Rowling’s name because she was “no longer felt to be an appropriate role model”. The school has an exisiting house system but is renaming them to give a better representation of gender, ethnicity, sexuality and gender identity. [...]

In its letter to parents, the school said it had recently chosen the names DaVinci, Seacole, Mercury, Attenborough, Rowling and Thompson for its new houses.

Is it too late to sign up for that Caliphate we keep hearing about?

Adam

Iguana, chameleon. What difference, at this point, does it make?

On a walk in a woods the other day, my grandson exclaimed “Whoa! Is that a snake with legs?”
He pointed to a clump of leaves and sure enough there was a snake with legs! That is, a skink. He’d seen them many times at home running across our patio, but somehow in the woods he didn’t recognize it.

This has nothing to do with systemic racism and for that I take responsibility and vow to be more self-monitoring going forward.

Horace Dunn

Invulnerability to factual correction, is a way for charmless, mediocre people to become interesting and statusful, if only among similarly underwhelming types.

Are they mental or simply a bunch of cunts?

Fair points. The reason I say that this is like a mental is because, well, it is like a mental illness.

Now I don't know whether the stats that Ami Horowitz is peddling in that clip are valid, and what exactly their detailed implications are. I haven't looked further into them at this stage. But my reaction on first hearing him mention them is one of some relief. Quite simply, I hope they are true. I hope that western society isn't the racist cesspit that the mainstream media would like us to think it is.

That is to say, my response is sensible and grown-up.

The response of the protesters is so peculiar - given that they're adults - that they give the impression of being mentally ill.

But, as David says, it's more likely that they're just guarding this new-found status (that is to say that they are obnoxious, selfish and narcissistic).

So probably you're right MC. They're simply a bunch of cunts.

David

They’re simply a bunch of cunts.

Unmitigated cuntishness, for want of a better term, i.e., cuntishness that’s excused and given license, does explain an awful lot.

That's the problem with animals that cannot be house trained running (or flying) free.

But why did you capitalize Iguana? Was that inadvertent or does a capital I mean a different sort of iguana, such as, maybe, Ralph the six-foot 300 pound...person, who identifies as a green-skinned lizardkin but who has not yet had surgery to get a big dewlap under his chin? :-D

“The North of yore”

When they said it was grim up north, they weren't kidding. I'm from Glasgow, and that looks more like the 1930s than the '70s I remember. Mind you, I have a book of Thomas Annan's photographs of the 19th Century Glasgow slums and, no exaggeration, it's more reminiscent of a medieval market town than the industrial powerhouse of the British Empire.

That'll be the white privilege, I expect.

“Inspector Gadget.”

Tetris.

“Orderly bear.”

There you are, that's what we need to deal with these protesters: bears. What could possibly go wrong?

“Teddy bears on a roller-coaster.”

TIL the Dutch for teddy bear is “knuffelber”. Which is rather lovely. Also, entirely incidentally, that the Swedish for illness is “sjukdom”, which also amused me.

“Somewhat related”, “Indigestible facts”

Or, “Our Betters are Morons”. Peggy Noonan's observation that we are patronized by our inferiors still holds.

“Chicken’s opinion not known.”

I like to think it was the chicken's idea. Foghorn Leghorn used to do basically the same thing to Barnyard Dawg all the time.

“Love Will Tear Us Apart”

I denounce their cultural appropriation. (Seriously though, that's awesome. As Tom says, between them, the cello woman, and the 8-Bit Big Band, it's a reminder that the human race hasn't gone totally insane quite yet.)

"All stats matter"

I've spent half the week trying to explain how the stats work to young, white woke people on twitter. How they've been fed selective stats, how you can't trust stats in general (watch how they're counted, watch the sample, correlation not causation etcetc) and how different variables could skew the results, but that even so they so far show the opposite of what the "protesters" think they say.

Guess what they called me? No, go on, guess what word beginning with "r"...

..as well as telling me I was a "Katie Hopkins follower" (actually no) and I didn't understand anything (worked in an Oxford Uni department doing stats for a decade, but still, what do I know?)

And the thing is I KNEW this was a waste of time, that nobody would be thinking carefully this week of all weeks..

Lady Cutekitten of Lolcat

Rod Dreher wrote about the situation in Seattle and a number of readers who said they lived in Seattle commented, saying no one much minded because the area was off the fashionably beaten paths. (I wonder how they’ll feel when the epidemics start and spread.). Anyway, if that’s correct, why not treat it as a country? Shut off the water till whichever tent has been designated the embassy switches the account from the cop shop to the People’s Republic of Chaz. Remove and resettle ordinary people living in this mess and send the PRCh the bill. Impose sanctions against the PRCh. Refuse to issue visas. Hilarity will ensue.

The government would do all the above, and worse, to me if I commandeered the local cop shop and took over our tiny downtown. So why do these people get consideration I don’t?

This kind of flagrant “some are more equal than others “ has enraged Americans for the last 40 years.

Don't they know we can see them?

Based on psychopaths that I grew up around, and more of 'em that I've had to work around, while being seen is an issue, the issue is that being seen is the point . . . Can you say condescending?

It reminds me of the Ami Horowitz video about voter registration. He goes to Berkeley where they tell him Blacks don't have ID, don't know how the internet works and don't know how to get ID. Then he heads to Harlem and asks Black people if they have ID or if they know where the DMV is and how to get there and if they know how the internet works.

These are the so-called allies of the POC. With friends like that...

David

It reminds me of the Ami Horowitz video about voter registration.

It’s a wonderfully revealing video.

See also this.

One of the highlights of which is the interview with a young white woman attending the “white privilege” conference, presumably a student, who insists that “white privilege” is both real and ubiquitous, and that she’s “hyper-aware” its effect “every day,” and feels “super guilty all the time.” But when asked, she struggles to think of any example, any example at all, of how she benefits from it. She then says, “Sorry, I’m not good at thinking.”

Lady Cutekitten of Lolcat

Well, at least she’s honest!

Steve E

It’s a wonderfully revealing video.

The two Horowitz videos were from 2016 and 2017 and people seemed to at least feel the cognitive dissonance if they didn't, in fact, recognize it. Whereas, in the recently posted video where they tell Ami to go find oral succor, these same lefties have let go of the dissonance by completely shutting down what Horowitz has to say. They've come to love Big Brother and they're getting their Two Minutes Hate on.

WTP

So I have a potential employer who seems interested in me. They sent me the benefits package, etc. Gave me a "logic" test that I'm fairly certain I passed...heh...but who knows? It was basic Computer Science 101 and high school Algebra type questions. Anyway, not the point. The thing was upon reviewing the benefits package something started to bother me. It's a contracting company that for whatever reason has only told me that the client is in the health care field. Which is fine, whatever. But it got to bothering me how so many consumer facing companies are expressing financial support for BLM and such, so I just asked what for me was the most awkward question that I've ever felt I have had to ask in such a situation. I Googled the contracting company's name and didn't find any support for such racist/fascist/terrorist idiocy but since I don't know the end client company's name I had to ask if they support such things. Will be interesting to see where this goes. The people that I'm talking with are out of South Carolina and the job is 100% remote so I'm hoping it's not an issue. It just bugged me in the middle of the night last night and took a while to get back to sleep until I committed myself to asking.

David

Seems likely: companies don't like applicants who raise political questions--much like they don't like applicants whose questions revolve around vacation, benefits, etc.
But I can very much understand your concern, WTP.

WTP

I suppose we will see. I'm not in a position where I absolutely have to have a job for financial reasons, though I do have a somewhat significant short-term cash-flow problem that will very, very likely be resolved by end of July. And the idiocy of US healthcare systems...though looking today it seems prices have come down a good bit. I certainly could use the mental challenges mostly to keep my mind occupied and off of this world-wide insanity. Either way, I would just as soon find physical type work, what there may be available for a moderately healthy man in his late 50's. Not that physical work does not itself present a good degree of mental challenge, it's just that I've always felt pressed to do the most intellectually challenging thing that I can. Attribute it to poor parenting I suppose /sarc. Well that and the gotta-go-to-college bullshit culture of post-war US.

Following yesterday's events in London, which saw far-right racist thugs use their pallid bodies to assault the knives, fists and boots of peaceful protesters, it was only natural to turn to Channel 4 News for enlightenment. We were fortunate Cathy Newman was able to secure an interview with one Lorraine Jones, a pastor, mother of seven, Daily Mail 'Inspirational Woman of the Year 2019', Chair of Lambeth Police Advisory Group - and expert on oppressive statuary. Her profound thoughts can be heard here (apologies for not being able to link directly to the relevant time). Her contribution begins about five minutes in. The exchange starting at about 6:06 is quite something to behold.

So what she's saying is, "I haven't personally met him."

Asking from the colonies, how come there are no "right" groups in Europe and the UK, only "far-right" groups?

Jonathan

...how come there are no "right" groups in Europe and the UK, only "far-right" groups?

Simple: because the acceptable, 'Establishment', view is now so far left that anyone who holds the same political and cultural views as the average Briton of forty years ago is classified as a Nazi.

Hal

Asking from the colonies, how come there are no "right" groups in Europe and the UK, only "far-right" groups?

Wellll . . . I believe a variety of logic would be that Duh Left is the repository of all that is utterly admired and to be worshipped and being all The Best People. And of that Being Of The Left, all such is all about one's Identity, but don't you dare notice Victimhood Poker.

Now, at the same time, as Whyte is clearly An Identity---and therefore is, by definition, [the repository . . . about one's Identity]---then merely by extension, that means that for any cries of White Power!!!, and Europeans Rule!!!, and such, being a very dedicated recitation of Identity Uber Alles, all such, by such definition, is Left Wing . . . . . errr, no, wait we're not playing Victimhood Poker here, "Whyte Power" can not be left wing!!! . . . so . . . .

What about claiming that Being Whyte is Duh Right Wing, that's the ticket . . . . except that Duh Right keeps being about Having The Correct Faith, and never mind which faith of all variations found of the right wing . . .

So at such a point, for the unfortunate devotee of Duh Left, as "Whyte" makes for the wrong identity and requires being other than left, and as there's no room off in Duh Right, then, therefore, such must be . . . ah . . Yes, Duh Far Right . . .

As I recall, the British Conservative Party largely ceased to be conservative when its upper class members realized that they could keep their wealth and privileges by embracing a socialism in which they are part of the nomenklatura. Have I got that right, David? And if true, precisely how true--how limited an explanation is that?

David

As I recall, the British Conservative Party largely ceased to be conservative...

Well, I wouldn’t argue to the contrary. The Conservative Party doesn’t seem very conservative, certainly not coherently so, and it doesn’t seem clear on what, if anything, it wishes to conserve. At best, on a good day, it’s slightly less unhinged than the alternatives.

pst314

Well, I wouldn’t argue to the contrary.

But you wouldn't go so far as to say I am right. I will take that as a reason to be cautious and not be too confident that what I read years ago is entirely accurate. :-(

David

But you wouldn’t go so far as to say I am right.

I don’t know enough about the party’s history to argue the point, basically. As to the historical causes and motives, I mean. The state of the thing now, however, is pretty obvious.
