Joan asks, drily, “Is it performance art?” [ ... ] It’s not just the ladies, of course. Quite a few leftist chaps seem a tad unstable too

I think it is performance art.

If you use parody not to entertain, but to persuade (hector might be more accurate), then what you're left with is a travesty.

Except unlike most forms of travesty, it's the result of design not accident.

Take Leo Guinan's Today I Gave My Dad A Choice: Trump or His Grandkids and His Son and the related earlier piece An Open Letter to my Dad ahead of the November election.

I just don't believe either one of them. Like those women in their cars, like Jessica Krug, Rachel Dolezal, or C.V. Vitolo-Haddad, it feels too artful, too obviously inauthentic to be in any way credible.

Reading An Open Letter to my Dad ahead of the November election is like reading an amateur Raymond Carver wannabe trying to imagine what it would be like to be the son of a Christian Trump voter, but failing dismally because they lack what all good fiction writers need - empathy with their subjects.

"You have been victimized", Leo informs his ersatz Vater:

Along with a good percentage of the population. They took advantage of the fact that you received your information from a selection of sources. The Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, etc. selection to be specific. They have fed you a very specifically curated selection of information, in order to elicit specific responses [ ...] If you would like to actually discuss any of the topics that Fox has been feeding you with an open mind, I will be happy to do so.

Does Guinan really expect anyone to see a real flesh-and-blood father behind these lines instead of this cardboard cutout of a Trump voter?

He's selling these posts as Greek tragedy, but I'm not buying.

It looks like parody, even now I would hardly be surprised to discover that it is, but I'm pretty sure it's a case of travesty-by-design.

And whoever would put their trust in someone like that?

David

Time for dad to rewrite his will. Skip a generation.

As with Ms Christina Cauterucci, a “gender and feminism” enthusiast whose Slate article is poked at here, you have to wonder if detailed fantasies of coercion and sadistic emotional punishment, and blackmailing your own parents in order to purge them of non-leftist views – using the threat of never seeing their grandchildren - is really a sign of a well-adjusted adult. And not, say, someone exhibiting cult-like behaviour.

And remember, these things are announced publicly, triumphantly, with pride. ‘What a clever and principled leftist I am’.

David

He’s selling these posts as Greek tragedy, but I’m not buying.

Well, to a large extent, modern leftism is very much about pretending.

Time was, disaster and loss actually stimulated human reproduction rather than militating against it.

"I wrote earlier about trying to express my reasons to my dad in a calm and intellectual manner. I actually thought I had been calm and well-reasoned. I thought I might even be making progress. Today I found out he put a Trump sign in his yard. I got pissed. Really pissed. And I sent him and my mom a text message. Hands shaking, tears in eyes."

Note the arrogant assumption that a single "calm and intellectual attempt" should be enough to overturn his father's political beliefs, as if they are a layer of dust that can be swept away in a few minutes.

Heather

This is my reality now, as an American: 20-something daughter moved home with us (SoCal). Several family members (including me, and her older sibling)are staunch Trump supporters, & live nearby in a tiny community. The progressive daughter can't be exposed to our dangerous 'fascist & racist' political discussions without being reduced to tears of rage. We have tried to just talk/listen about our different beliefs - to no avail. Apparently we don't deserve to be able to express opinions, and now we -the 'brown shirts'- have to have 'secret meetings', indoors, so we're not overheard by her tender ears.

Hang in there, Heather!

Try the "California will go to Biden anyway, so it doesn't really matter if we vote for Trump" line with your daughter.

We live in NY and that's the approach I take with my "progressive" sister. There's no talking to her.

If he were my son, I would ask him where he learned this game of emotional blackmail. And if he learned it from the family, I would apologize, but I would want to see his proof. I would also challenge him as to where he learned to be so intolerant of the opinions of others. If he learned it at school I would tell him he has suffered a disservice and let him know he is owed compensation. I would also challenge him to examine the beliefs that have lead him to behave this way.

It’s worth pointing out that in the film version (I haven’t read the book) Hannibal specifically tells Starling that Buffalo Bill is not a real transsexual; he is a crazy person who latched on to the idea as a fucked up coping mechanism. He wants to “transform” to escape facing himself.

It does, I think, suggest that the relationship wasn’t entirely functional before the detection of the Trump yard sign.

It’s rather like how Ms Cauterucci, our other supposedly principled withholder of grandchildren, boasts of her woke ingenuity in making such threats, ostensibly on lofty ethical grounds, before admitting, briefly and in passing, that, “I’ve already decided that I’m not having kids.” Which invites the suspicion that an after-the-fact excuse is being aired – one that’s grandiose, self-flattering and not wholly convincing.

David

Is there something in the water?

Something in the culture, certainly. A kind of social contagion. And as Daniel noted a while ago, “We have entire institutions dedicated to producing hordes of young people with a kind of artificial cluster B personality disorder.”

Harry Powell

A certain type of person has always been attracted to politics as a means of therapy, as if changing the world is going to quiet their personal demons. It has never worked. It does work, however, to make the world as miserable as they themselves are. This sad story illustrates that it only takes a very petty kind of power (that of denying a grandad access to his grandkids) for politics to make the world a slightly shittier place.

David

A certain type of person has always been attracted to politics as a means of therapy, as if changing the world is going to quiet their personal demons.

It occurs to me that politics really shouldn’t occupy that much space in a person’s life.

WTP

Is there something in the water?

Worse. There's something in the psychology profession and the wider culture. By those 'standards' the behavior of these people is 'understandable' if not 'normal'. This has been the case for decades now. It's why reporters can stand in front of burning buildings and tell you 'peaceful' protests are going on. 'Normal' people understand these things. Please get with the program.

pst314

It occurs to me that politics really shouldn’t occupy that much space in a person’s life.

This is a fundamental reason why I am a conservative--but I never imagined years ago I would be citing raving lunatics as examples supporting my position.

Hal

Worse. There's something in the . . . the program.

Rather as noted . . .

Person number one . . . number four, sees an individual. The individual is noted as being an individual, and will be assessed as an individual, and is solely assessed by what that individual does or does not do, because when it comes to some useless left or right wing declaration of ideology, the knowledge or reactions of others is recognized as being totally irrelevant.

WTP

You could do some sort of blind test and read their outbursts, and be 99% sure they are white, slightly to greatly overweight, and BEARDED. Always bearded. The once symbol of rugged manliness is now a perfect proxy for simpering, effete cry-babies.

Daniel Ream

David

An educator, you say?

Governor Squid

One of the commenters on the latest twitter thread observed that the "breakdown in the car" selfies are a perfect way of assuring that one receives feedback only from one's social media peers. You don't see "breakdown in the Olive Garden" or "breakdown in the fitness center" selfies, because these are public places where actual human beings would intervene and tell the maniac how silly they're being.

They can tell themselves they are "normal" (per WTP's observation above), but the dead giveaway is that they don't act out these performances anywhere that actual normal people could put them in their place. Hell, even the BLM bullies don't do their thing among normal people unless they have a bullhorn and a mob to assure that nobody can push back on their delusions.

“That wasn’t real socialism.”

David

Are there any grown-ups left in academia?

In the Clown Quarter at least, our self-imagined radicals do seem uniformly juvenile in their posturing. The default moody-teen hyperbole (‘fascism,’ ‘burn it down,’ etc); the gratuitous look-at-me profanity (to let us know they aren’t stuffy grown-ups, presumably); the lack of self-possession, and the rest. It’s like some never-ending adolescent tantrum.

Hal

Oh, well done.

Hal

. . . be 99% sure they are white, slightly to greatly overweight, and BEARDED.

Genuinely bearded, or merely a bout of mildewface?

Squires

That is a real transsexual.

There are individuals who have the misfortune of experiencing a mismatch between brain development and the sex of their body. I do not argue that these individuals were the majority of self-identifying transsexuals even before the left added “gender dysphoria” to its list of Holy Disfunctions. The existence of the confused, abused, and/or groomed does not, however, make the real cases cease to exist.

Stubble Johansson above is clearly a badly damaged looney, attracted to the addictive in-cult acceptance the left offers to those who perform in an approved manner. Monkey pushes button, monkey gets a peanut.

The acceptance and appreciation is a lie, of course. It is a drug offered for the purpose of fulfilling the offerer’s desires; it is a tool for the same tactic used by common pimps.

@Daniel Ream - thread winner.

WTP

mmmK...so in the interests of Open Thread, I have this to share...

So this happened...Back in August there was a GOP primary election in my home state of Florida. As wife and I are up here in GA for the summer, we submitted absentee ballot requests for the upcoming primary election in FL back in April or May. As of early August, we still hadn't received them so I called the elections office. According to the county election office, the ballots were BOTH sent to our FL address and returned as not being forwardable. The lady checked on our requests and verified that we both had filled them out with the proper mailing addresses. Apparently they were "entered incorrectly". Wife did hers by hand/on paper, I did mine electronically. Either way, the lady at the elections office apologized profusely and said she would be putting them in the mail. Long(er) story short, we did receive them a week before the election day and after speaking with the election commissioner, he said we could overnight the ballots back and send him the bill. Which we did. Cost was $26.35. Took a looong time getting back to us but after several phone calls and the check getting mailed first to our Florida address before forwarding up here (even though I was quite clear texting the Georgia address and had confirmation it would be sent directly here), it arrived today. Just opened the envelope containing an apology/thank-you-for-your-patience note and a check for....wait for it....$50.00. WTF is wrong with me that I really would have preferred a check for $26.35? Given the political and legal chaos and BS in my deep subconscious, the thing that hits me at 3 AM when I'm not exactly in conscious control of my thoughts, I picture myself months/years from now getting crucified by some Kafkaesque Kangaroo Kourt over this.

Steve E

...I picture myself months/years from now getting crucified by some Kafkaesque Kangaroo Kourt over this.

Could happen, make sure you claim the $23.65 as income when you file your return just to be sure. ;-)

Steve E

She seems nice.

Daniel Ream

The existence of the confused, abused, and/or groomed does not, however, make the real cases cease to exist.

In #CurrentYear one has to be careful to avoid confounding the social contagion cases with the clinical ones, but 80-90% of men with sexual dysmorphia severe enough to seek self-mutilation were sexually abused as children in the same etiology that produces the cluster B personality disorders.

For women, it's effectively 100% (although there's a much higher proportion of social contagion cases in women, for the usual reasons).

As I said, these are the real transsexuals. People with some form of epigenetic brain damage that produces severe dysmorphia are rare exceptions, not the norm.

Pace Joaquin Phoenix in Joker, protracted, suppressed childhood abuse is the elephant in the room and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

Daniel Ream

cares more about what an amorphous group of people thinks about him than the love of his family

There seems to be a disturbing amount of this. I'm fairly certain these people never actually follow through with these claims; they're performative. But there are times when the performance itself is harmful, such as when outright slandering one's family as racist or posting GUN_FREE ZONE signs on one's property. There's a frightening kind of narcissistic sociopathy at play when someone sacrifices their own family for the dopamine high of strangers liking their posts.

David

There’s a frightening kind of narcissistic sociopathy at play when someone sacrifices their own family for the dopamine high of strangers liking their posts.

Variation on a theme: Sacrificing the wellbeing of one’s children – slandering and humiliating them in the national press – in order to assert one’s all-important feminist credentials.

Sam

There's a frightening kind of narcissistic sociopathy at play when someone sacrifices their own family for the dopamine high of strangers liking their posts.

True, but I imagine plain old "taking things for granted" is at play as well. As in, maybe some these people assume their family will approve of them unconditionally (they've been told as much throughout their coddling) and, moreover, their family is boring and nothing like those fierce brave celebrities they worship. I mean, what chance does fair but firm (roll with me on this) familial love have against a quantifiable amount of approval from strangers for your typical narcissist?
