"Democracy dies in darkness".

The irony- it burns.

At which point, readers may wish to consider Ms Beltrán’s own readiness to mouth fanciful conspiracies, not least regarding “whiteness” and its supposed power to rob brown-skinned people of all agency.

That.

David

And if Ms Beltrán’s rhetorical contortions aren’t quite enough to lower your spirits, there are plenty of gushing endorsements, not least from fellow leftist academics.

Felicity

Lols, just after I read this post I took a quick look at Twitter, and this was at the top of my feed: https://twitter.com/ClimateWarrior7/status/1351082928860762116?s=20

Same logic illogic.

Sam Duncan

“the politics of aggression, exclusion and domination.”

“the standing of one section of the population is premised on the debasement of others.”

“feelings of freedom and belonging are produced through the persecution and dehumanisation of others.”

“the wild freedom of unbridled rage and conspiracy theories.”

The lack total absence of self-awareness would be staggering if it weren't so tediously predictable by now.

Psychologists would have a field day, if they could be bothered. It's no longer just “Lefties project”. This is outright paranoia. It's not just actual white people who are out to get her, it's everybody.

Ray

It doesn't make sense for a non-white to be a conservative, because conseratives are white supremacists. As miss Rand said, "If something seems contradictory, examine your preconceptions."

Felicity,
I'm confused. Is a non-man a wo-man?

David

this was at the top of my feed

I’m assuming it’s a parody. Though a parody of a very real niche neuroticism. Of course, we live in dementing times, so it’s not always easy to tell.

Thon Brocket

@Felicity, we may be the victims of a hoax here.

From CW7's bio: "Save the Pacific island of Ydorap"

David

Psychologists would have a field day

Again, wokeness is a kind of niche neuroticism. It promises in-group status but requires contortion, pretence and outright dishonesty. And so, Ms Beltrán bemoans racism and “the debasement of others” while casually erasing agency from anyone brownish who happens to disagree with her, and while pathologising white people as creatures of “rage.” And she denounces conspiracy theories as some kind of white vice, while indulging in precisely the same, albeit in bad academic drag.

And she is applauded for this. By her equally glorious peers.

That's easy. White is the amalgam of all the colours of the spectrum, ergo, white is inclusive of all colours and therefore superior and privileged.

And what are we to make of unmistakably White mob violence that also includes non-White participants?

I did a quick search of the article, and failed to notice any use by Ms. Beltrán of the word "coconut."

Is this an unfortunate omission by Ms. Beltrán, or just a case of excessive wordiness to avoid being accused of implying any unfortunate connotations such a word would otherwise have?

WTP

Psychologists would have a field day

Ummm...hello! Don't know if this woman is a psychologist but it would not surprise me. The logic and reasoning , so called, is standard shrink cannon. Perception is reality. Shrinks have been saying so for at least 30-40 years now. Fool.

pst314

Given last year’s scenes of rioting, looting and generally feral behaviour, and the feats of illogic to excuse such things - to say nothing of crime statistics over the last fifty years - the conceit that non-white people have somehow been excluded from participation in “mob violence” and “the politics of aggression” is faintly comical.

The claim is, however, an evergreen one. At the height of the riots, when nationally famed cultural treasures (see Uncle Hugo's) were burned, leftists were insisting that the violence was all the work of white right-wingers engaged in false flag operations. No word yet on whether the Great Cultural Revolution was also such a thing.

pst314

Via Climate Warrior, Austria now mandates harder-to-breathe-through FFP2 masks.

How long until we all look like this?

Heh. Sounds about right.

Can Trump Pardon Himself?

Well, I suppose if congress can impeach him even after he's left office, there's no reason why Trump can't pardon himself first.

*blam*

*crickets*

"Next", ordered the People's Judge overseeing the NYC purges...

Daniel Ream

It's a problem with terminology. For "Whiteness", read "Vichy".

Sines

You know, this woman could just be complaining about the multi-ethnic reach of Trumpism. Or Right-Wing Populism. Or Nativism. Or... any of a number of terms. Instead, she insists on calling this ideology of 'rage and domination' 'whiteness', despite it being proven to not being tied to a single race.

When you insist on tying negative traits to a race, even when it's been proven that it's not related to race, then just maybe, you're a racist.

The sad thing is, a lot of racists got deradicalized because they met some decent black people. However, whereas the anti-black racism of the 50s was just a background cultural thing, something that was just part of society, wokeness is a learned ideology that insists on being protected at all costs. It's a religion that can't be overcome simply with new data, but must instead be overcome only by individuals who spot the contradictions, and are willing to question everything they believe.

And with recent events... we're not getting out of this any time soon. I grew up in an age when race just wasn't a thing. I remember that Fresh Prince of Bell Aire had the hood-rat playing against the yuppie... and both were black. Carlton was a stereotypical WASP, but without the whiteness, and that didn't change a thing. And now, here we are, where racism is the dominant way to view the culture. Not because most people are racist, but because racists have gained control of the culture.

The scary thing is... I have no idea how this is going to end. There's never been a culture where there was official racism against the minority. The closest you would get is a noble vs. commoner seperation... but right now, society is still run primarily by the hated racial group. Societies can function just fine while racist, they did so for thousands of years. But what in the seven hells happens to a society that is racist against it's own majority, and the people who run it? This is a special kind of insanity that can only be found at the end of a civilization...

David

And remember, Ms Beltrán’s is the kind of attitude, and the standard of thinking, that makes her fellow Clown Quarter leftists bark with approval, like happy seals.

Bill de Haan
knows nothing of the history of Latinos in the United States

This reminds me of Trump's first forays into the Middle East peace process, and dealing with ISIS (remember them?). He was going to ignite the entire region, not only offending the Arab Muslim world, which was already pissed off at the west, but the Jews in Israel, with his attempts to move the American embassy, because of his ignorance of the Jews.

After all, it's not like a New York city real estate mogul was ever going to have any experience interacting with Jews...

Daniel Ream

Carlton was a stereotypical WASP, but without the whiteness, and that didn't change a thing

Carlton was the butt of jokes explicitly because he was an Oreo. Fresh Prince of Bel Air was a black version of Family Ties.

There's never been a culture where there was official racism against the minority.

...wait, what?

Sue Sims

There's never been a culture where there was official racism against the minority.

I think that Sines mis-typed and meant to write 'majority'. Since his comment is otherwise lucid and thought-provoking, it must be an oversight.

Ask the inhabitants of Point du Gard, roughly 500 AD or so...

Sines

Did I write 'against the minority'? Sorry, I meant against the majority. Writing this when a bit tired.

And maybe it's just my childish naivete but I think Carlton was the butt of the jokes for the same reason that Niles Crane was the butt of jokes. They were made fun of for being stuck up snooty idiots. Geoffrey the Butler and Carltons judge father were treated with respect. They were made fun of, same as everyone else, but there was a huge difference between those two, and Carlton. Carlton, like Niles, was an exaggerated upper-class twit. And many of the jokes about one could be used on the other (It's not a perfect mirror, but that's mostly because of the kind of twit they were).

Sure, sometimes Carlton got mocked for not being 'black enough', but this was much more of a problem for him than it was for Geoffrey or the Uncle, because a lot of his personality was a pretention in the first place. The other characters had cultural friction, but it wasn't a racist thing. It wasn't considered 'wrong' for those characters to be the way they were just because they were black, even if it was used as a source of comedy from time to time.

At least, this is all how I remembered it. Maybe I've got it all wrong.

Chicago to halt COVID spread by ordering restaurants reopened!

HEADLINE: Chicago Mayor Calls for Bars, Restaurants to Reopen to Prevent Spread of COVID
https://cnsnews.com/blog/melanie-arter/chicago-mayor-calls-bars-restaurants-reopen-prevent-spread-covid

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called Thursday for the city’s restaurants and bars to be reopened as soon as possible, saying that it will prevent COVID-19 from spreading through private parties, because business owners can enforce social distancing protocols.

“If we have people and give them an outlet for entertainment in the restaurant space, in the bar space, we have much more of an opportunity, in my view, to be able to regulate and control that environment,” Lightfoot said.'....

This is truly another miracle attributable to Honest Joe Biden - The Peoples' Choice. First he wins election without campaigning in a one-in-quadrillion long-shot in the most fraud-free, open election in American history. Now his impending ascendancy to office causes COVID to recede as all the feeble attempts of Trump to lock down and ruin the economy have proven disastrous and must be reversed on Day One. Next he will hasten $1400 checks to all Americans which were denied by the outgoing, totally discredited, insurrectionist, twice-impeached Trump administration (May his name be forgotten forever).

Nonsense. I'm a stuck up snooty idiot, but everyone I know is so delighted to hear what I have to say that they laugh with joy.
TDK

I think Carlton was the butt of the jokes for the same reason that Niles Crane was the butt of jokes.

Much comedy derives from a situation where "normal" characters coexist with "comedy grotesques". The latter are meant to be caricatures rather than rounded individuals. Niles and Carlton both perform that role. Frasier was a comedy grotesque on Cheers who's character became more rounded as the series progressed, albeit never lost. I read that When they made Frasier (the series) they makers realised that such a central character would not work and so they toned Frasier down but added Niles to play the old Frasier character.

Sines

Sadly, I'm glad to hear about stuff like that coming out of Chicago. Things are going straight to hell and I don't think it can be stopped, but it's much easier to tolerate the beatings when I'm allowed to at least pretend life is normal.

At least I live out in the middle of nowhere. I'll be avoiding the cultural enrichment, mostly avoid the ideologies, and simply having to deal with the local trash that the government condones and supports. Which still sucks, but it's basically just an exaggerated version of the normal "I'm from the government and I'm here to help".

WTP

Bloody hell. This is like a paranoid schizophrenic being shown incontrovertible proof their delusions aren’t real and watching them concoct ever more elaborate and absurd rationalisations to keep clinging to them

Yeah...I posted this quote from Orwell's 1984 regarding double-speak on facebook...

“To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself -- that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word 'doublethink' involved the use of doublethink.”
― George Orwell, 1984
One of my most leftist, white fragility quoting, etc. friends gave it a like. You see, this applies to us deplorables not to the goodthinkers. A circle in a spiral of an ever spinning wheel...

“If you don’t vote as I say, there’s something wrong with your blackness. It’s the only possible explanation.”

I paraphrase, of course. But just barely. As an attempt to persuade, it leaves something to be desired. But as a measure of the standards of woke academia, and its vanity and parochialism, it works pretty well.

Fair enough, but the US was using the Purple Heart decorations that were made prior to the scheduled invasions of Japan until sometime this century. (Even so, the only reason that the US ran out was due to water damage in one storage site.)

Daniel Ream

The messages in Fresh Prince aren't as blatant as in today's media (*cough*DearWypipo*cough) but they're there. As I said, Fresh Prince is just a copy of Family Ties: the formerly radical 60's activists (Phil and Vivian) grow up to become respected middle-class bourgeoisie (well, wealthy af) and their children become stereotypes of the the things they fought against. Hilary is Mallory, the vapid, materialistic consumerite and Carlton is the Alex P. Keaton (there's even a cute Jennifer/Ashley moppet). In the same way that Alex was a source of dismay to his parents for being a corporate capitalist forever sucking up to any tycoon the writers injected, Carlton is a source of dismay to Will for trying so hard to be a WASP. The show's available on a number of streaming services. Power through the first season, when most of the comedy still revolved around the Philly/Bel Air culture divide, and you'll see it.

You're right about Frasier, but it's for a different reason. One of the common formats for comedies is The Farmer in the Dell[1], where a reasonably normal, well-rounded audience-identification figure is the main character surrounded by a variety of unrealistic one-dimensional comic stereotypes. The stereotypes bouncing off of the main character and his attempts to deal with their shenanigans forms the comedy. Frasier, The Muppet Show, The Orville, Burn Notice, Arrested Development - you've seen this a million times. Fresh Prince isn't that, though - it's a family-com crossed with a bit of the Beverley Hillbillies.

[1] from the children's game where the farmer starts out in the middle of a circle of the other children, from which is drawn the rest of the characters in the verses.

... the US was using the Purple Heart decorations that were made prior to the scheduled invasions of Japan until sometime this century.

The reason being that the Allies expected a butcher's bill of over one million allied combatants if there was a Normandy-style invasion, hence the huge number of medals produced. That's one reason the A-Bomb was used: it probably saved millions of people overall, including my father-in-law held in a POW camp not all that far from Hiroshima and facing, as were all POWs held by the Japanese, instant death if such an invasion was attempted. If you watch the video at the link, it’s quite revealing. Ms Prescod-Weinstein is a twitchy, neurotic thing with tediously woke pretentions and a remarkable inability to answer a straightforward and pertinent question.

She and her fellow self-congratulating “thought leaders” are supposed to be talking about the temperaments and qualities required to explore space, a subject in which they seemingly have little interest. The ostensible topic is largely, almost entirely, ignored, and questions of even rudimentary practicalities – the first things one might ask - leave them silent and useless. And so, they opt instead to disdain white people, especially white men, and of course Donald Trump. These are the enthusiasms foremost in their minds.

And this is the standard now, at least in their circles.
