Squires

...and of course UFO...for other reasons.

An engineer’s own personal boxed set of that particular series played an important role in testing out equipment that was to be installed in the then under-construction flagship of a certain young man’s employer:

I’m certain my boss at the time chose those specific recordings for completely legitimate, technical reasons.

Yes, I suppose that seals it. It was all a troll after all. This is my embarrassed face.

I have no doubt that the 14% O2 at 10,000 feet...

I was thinking that. When (much) younger and very much more fit (and more fit than these twerps) I enjoyed some time skiing at 10,000 ft and above. Climbing stairs took heavy breathing, much less slinging sandbags - which I have also done, albeit much closer to sea level (thank God). I don't give these LARPers much of a chance.

Uma Thurmond's Feet

Oddly, while I greatly enjoyed Columbo, I didn't see it very often. I believe it was not on every week but was swapped around with a Dennis Weaver show about some cowboy cop in NYC, which oddly I never got into.

Ah, the "NBC Mystery Movie" series, in which they rotated four shows: Columbo, McCloud (the cowboy cop), Banacek, and Cool Million, about a guy who took on the toughest cases for that fee (that didn't last long). One of my favorite shows from my childhood. At some point, "McMillan and Wife" was inserted, featuring Rock Hudson and his toupee with the cute Susan St. James as his wife. It wasn't until years later that I realized what a great talent Rock had for playing it straight.

The show's opening title sequence (featuring a shadowy man waving a flashlight around) led to this skit from MST3K from one of my favorite movies, the immortal "Teenagers from Outer Space."

If I can "become a man" just by saying so, why can't I become black?

Pipe down, Rachel - you were before your time.

Are you saying it was St. James who was the comedy part of the duo?

... great talent Rock had for playing it straight.

I see what you did there...

If I can "become a man" just by saying so, why can't I become black?

reminds me of the time a fan of College affirmative action told me the only reason I didn't benefit from it myself by simply claiming I was black must be because of my inherent racism.

the choices in shot and soundtrack

Back then you got Henry Mancini, today you get the Bare Naked Ladies.

WTP

choices in shot and soundtrack, adds… a certain something.

Just now had a chance to watch that clip. What impresses me watching such things from the 70's and before is how well dressed even criminal scum were back in the day. These days people will look at you funny if you wear a tie to church.

David

how well dressed even criminal scum were back in the day.

Well, Columbo did tend to spend his time among well-heeled murderers. Upscale vintners, famous novelists, faded film stars, surgeons and such. The fish-out-of-water thing.

"darkskin supremacy" woman says black people should be losers.: "i want black men to stop internalizing white dreams & desires. i want yall to stop thinking investing in stocks is going to get yall anywhere."

pst314

Also from Women Posting Their L’s Online, this entirely sane individual: "convinced my 44 year old therapist to confront her husband about not liking her instagram posts and left the session feeling so empowered by the realization that while she can’t make me better, i can make us both worse."

Please, Lord, let this be satire.

pst314

These days people will look at you funny if you wear a tie to church.

Several friends came to my mother's funeral, which was very kind. But none of them wore a suit and tie and all looked sloppy to slovenly, reminding me of the cultural gulf between my generation and the one after. I greatly greatly regret the decline of so many customs and traditions--something which I feel is important and which Jordan Peterson has discussed on occasion.

WTP

Please, Lord, let this be satire.

So much of this crap is satire, like the 200 acres at 10,000 feet. But there is so much stupid out there, soooo much that it takes much effort to discern. It's a troll, really. Hence my embarrassment at not seeing it. My question being is it a troll from the right or the left?

Darleen

how well dressed even criminal scum were back in the day.

Even stylish, one might say.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

It's a troll, really.

The "commander in chief" has been at this for years, and apparently "Black Hammer" is an offshoot of the African People's Socialist Party.

Great Scott, LiveJournal. If'n that don't bring back memories.

WTP

OK, it's a troll walking on a real leftist group. Thus it's a troll from the right. I mean there's stupid but I suspect some pics from that group have been repurposed for the troll. The 200 acres at 10,000 feet...but looking at the reparations page again...maybe not. Again, one way or another this world is not real.

Herp McDerp

And who decides what is "white"?

I couldn't help noticing that several of the "New Wakandans" seem to have declared themselves honorary bipocs, in much the same way that Japanese people were declared "honorary Aryans" eight decades ago.

I also noticed that at least one dwelling in one of the photographs seems to be either a Photoshop paste or pure CGI.

I reject your reality and replace it with my soviet socialist fantasy!

pst314

Everybody, thank you very much for your favorite 70's TV shows. This promises to be a lot of fun. I will be using your recommendations to guide me in seeking out DVD's at the local library system. Ironically and amusingly, the only series that I cannot find in the library system is the one that I mentioned at the start of the thread: Baretta. Is it no longer popular enough for libraries to keep copies? That is astonishing in a metropolitan area of over 8 million. Again, thank you all very much.

pst314

"honorary bipocs"

"Bipoc" sounds like something you'd carry in your pack when hiking, or in your emergency auto repair toolkit.

Earth bag house - the nouveau mud hut?

Luxury suburban living for future tech industry worker bees: "labor 80 hours a week for 20 years and you too can afford a 100 square foot mud hut surrounded by 100 square feet of lawn and garden...if we don't downsize you at age 35 because you're over the hill. Remember, comrade, there is an Ethical Suicide Parlor on every street corner."
