Two things in that story make me suspicious. In a school like that they're stealing the calculators? And second, the kids threatening to knife him in the parking lot if they didn't get graduation credit. What's wrong with people?

We have a small retail/commercial plaza in the heart of our neighbourhood. It's a bit of an eyesore but it serves its purpose. There's a quite good bakery, a child care centre, an interior design firm, a centre for autism and a commercial gluten free desert company.

The owner has made an application for re-zoning the property to allow the development of a small seniors retirement low rise (4 stories). The area surrounding the property is single detached homes except for a development directly behind it which is condominium town houses. Well as soon as the advisory sign went up the NIMBYs went in to action. People all around the site and some not so close to the site have put up "NO re-zoning" signs.

What I find interesting is that most of the people who have put up signs have been in the neighbourhood for less than 5-years. Also, I've seen the plans for the development and viewed the architect's model. It looks very nice. It certainly looks better than the plaza that's there now. They're building underground parking with more than sufficient availability to keep cars off the street. Though the townhouse people tend to use the plaza's lot as their personal overflow parking lot, which may explain their concern. Because I'm sure if they tried to build townhouses in that spot today, there would be say "NO to Townhouse" signs all over the neighbourhood too.

Anyway I've been having some fun in the neighbourhood by telling anyone who'll listen that anyone with a "NO" lawn sign is an ageist and that anyone who puts a "NO" sign on their lawn just wants seniors to die. It's been fun watching heads explode. I don't care anymore because I'm moving in a couple of months. My wife want's to have "YES" signs made up to stir the pot.

I live across the street from the strip club in our mutual town. The owner held out until a developer offered him private-island levels of money, but when the developer applied for a variance to build high-rises the usual suspects began squawking. The local ward councilor got visibly frustrated with them, pointing out that they'd been demanding for years the city Do Something about the strip club, and now that it was going away they were protesting what it was being replaced with. The deal ultimately feel through and the strip club is still there, slowly crumbling into even more of an graffiti-ridden eyesore since it's been closed for over a year.

These were the same people who seemed to think the local city councilor could somehow force a major chain to open a supermarket in Aldershot, it being too far to drive to the Fortinos (4 km away).

I graduated from a well-regarded technical college back in 2010 (BS in physics). deGrasse-Tyson was one of the speakers. Afterwards, I ran into two professors from within my major, who I greatly respected, sitting together having a beer at the post-ceremony reception/party. I asked what they thought of his talk and both gave every indication of despising him, though they kept their comments civil.

What I learned on my summer vacation last week:
1) Overnight passages at sail are very dull, and the sleep deprivation will kick your ass.
2) Isle Royale is a truly magnificent place.
3) Meclizine is a wonderful drug. It keeps my breakfast where it belongs (instead of letting it become fish food) and the dry-mouth side effect encourages me to drink lots of fluids.
4) Great Lakes freighters prefer that you not get within five miles of their projected course through the shipping lanes. They don't care how close you get if you're abaft their beam.
5) Spending five days with no internet or cell service is tremendously therapeutic. Even though I missed you all terribly.
