'Poll of note'

Honkx, honkicies.

Bug pronouns.

Interesting, but not new, anyone who has seen a movie with Marine basic training knows "maggot" has been a perfectly comulent pronoun for decades. In her case, however, does it have to be generic "bug", or can we be more specific like "Drosophila melanogaster"?

Joan

Some good news.

More of this.

WTP

If the principal and related administrative staff who obviously had to know something was wrong there are not fired as well, it's still a win for the commies. They're just learning where the boundaries are so that they can now devise a more subtle plan to push them further. It's a strategy many successful people, organizations, military, etc. have used often.

So, er... any outrage from the comrades on teh Twitt0rz about this, then?

[I]dentifying LGBT students and collecting records about them is not limited to Shanghai University, and is happening in other colleges throughout the country as well.

In fact, the notice from University of Shanghai mentions “relevant requirements,” which may have a national scope.

Ah, but it's not real communism, of course.

Promoting breastfeeding as “natural” may be ethically problematic, and, even more troublingly, it may bolster this belief that “natural” approaches are presumptively healthier. This may ultimately challenge public health’s aims in other contexts, particularly childhood vaccination.

They go on to note that this matters because a preference for natural things might then lead to other unhealthy preferences such as organic food, unfluoridated water, and even homeschooling.

The Long March never rests.

So in the interest of content...Odd real estate listings being a thing here...now this place is kinda the opposite of what we generally see here. This place, the inside is very nice. Not exceptional, cheap appliances and such, but a good bit of money was poured into this, formerly commercial, building. Wife tells me the former business sold hiking related products. For $399K in this area you can find much nicer properties. Maybe not quite as big but definitely sufficient and in a much nicer location with a much nicer view and still close to town if that is what one needs. OTOH, this place is right next door to the post office and the local supermarket is right in your backyard.

Marcel Duchamp's urinal* failed to win hearts and minds in Afghanistan.

Great insight on the hypocrisy of the left from the linked article:

"On Ivy League campuses, students are taught to decry ‘colonialism’, but the Ivy League diplomats who sought to remake Afghanistan in Harvard’s image were among the most ambitious practitioners of it in world history."

Something about the end justifying the means perhaps.

WTP

If it was on the lake,…

Heh. That's the even better part. It's not even on the other side of the highway that the lake is on. To get to the lake, you cross the busy highway, past the hardware store and the church that sits between the archery store and the guns/ammo/fishing store, walk past numerous other businesses, city hall, the old jail, and about another half mile down to the end of a lakeside road. And I think that's just a boat dock access. If this were on the lake and still close to the busy highway, you could get $500K for it. There's a similar size property, though with added garage space and dock and such that is right off the highway, on the lake, with much nicer appliances and much nicer interior and much nicer curb appeal from the outside that sold for that much last year. Though I suppose there's someone stupid enough, with that much money, that might buy it. I just don't get who/how someone would have sunk that much money into risking it though. Just typing this out, it just occurred to me that the city got some insane improvement loan as part of this covid insanity to develop a ridiculous piece of commercial property nearby there that itself is a huge waste of money. A very ugly space, a "historic" building, crammed between two crappy old buildings, that last I heard they were going to put an open air rooftop bar or restaurant in. Because "historic".

It is possible, of course, to believe that concerns about pedophilia are disproportionate, and one might wish to discuss policy about related issues in a disinterested way. For example, many people have noted how travesties of justice like the McMartin Preschool Case were fueled by exaggerated fears, fueled by nonsense theories of “suppressed memory,” etc. But it is a completely different thing when, as in the case of Noah Berlatsky, someone starts arguing that the real problem is not pedophilia, but rather the “stigma” attached to pedophilia. Really? You want to destigmatize pedophilia?
Karl

Give us this day, our daily pills

Daniel Ream

travesties of justice like the McMartin Preschool Case were fueled by exaggerated fears, fueled by nonsense theories of “suppressed memory,” etc.

It's significantly worse than that. The children in question testified to multiple things that were physically impossible, and yet law enforcement and the DA investigated them as if they were unvarnished fact. That case is (now) a textbook example of the state run amok, and in retrospect it is obvious that the whole thing was started by a bitter ex-wife making false accusations to wrench custody away from her ex-husband. Why anyone took her insane claims seriously from the get-go remains a mystery.

From wikipedia: Johnson also made several more accusations, including that people at the daycare had sexual encounters with animals, that "Peggy drilled a child under the arms" and "Ray flew in the air." Ray Buckey was questioned, but was not prosecuted due to lack of evidence.

Vice President Joe Biden is fresh out of the Obama White House and feeling adrift when his favourite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident, leaving behind an ailing wife and a trail of clues. To unravel the mystery, "Amtrak Joe" re-teams with the only man he's ever fully trusted-the 44th president of the United States. Together they'll plumb the darkest corners of Delaware, traveling from cheap motels to biker bars and beyond, as they uncover the sinister forces advancing America's opioid epidemic.

The software-company slack group I use for my leftwing pulse taking was suddenly silent the past few weeks, and just today have relished having a government grievance to discuss again.

Darleen

strike anyone as odd?

Well, you'd have to back up a bit and realize the timing at SCOTUS had everything to do with Texas Gov Abbott's signing of the bill.

Also, I bet none of the foaming-at-mouth pro-abortionists have taken 30 seconds to realize that SCOTUS did NOT rule on the bill, but it has everything to do with a procedural issue.

Even without this latest kerfuffle, the Pravda Media was already pivoting from Afghanistan. The Feds are "cleansing" the internet of any documentation of military hardware left behind and stories of the dead 13 are only appearing in local media. And not one story, video showing all those rescued Americans returning home.

This has got to be memory-holed and a Biden success narrative created in time for the mid-terms.

Future being now. I recently had a friend whose phone was on its last legs and as he is not particularly tech savvy was helping him get a new one (an Android phone) as private as possible. However, when the sim card was put in, he hit (despite my telling him it was not a wise choice) the "update" notification and a 'rona tracking app was installed. Time for Lineage on that phone.

a) Ramp up ahead of the midterms, allowing election fortification but inviting blame for not mitigating the worst virus ever
2) Lessen in the meantime, allowing Biden to put his foot on the coof dragon's corpse and claim temporary victory

The software-company slack group I use for my leftwing pulse taking was suddenly silent the past few weeks, and just today have relished having a government grievance to discuss again.

A former colleague, who has worked on books with a prominent software guru, sort-of (likely former) friend, quasi-moderate-to-conservative (supposedly hates communism because his dad escaped from it), and owner of a small but profitable consulting business recently announced, out of nowhere, recently posted (now apparently deleted) how ashamed he was of his home state of Texas over this abortion thing. I'm thinking....Austin? You've lived in bloody Austin...and Portland, OR as well...but nothing going on there has embarrassed you? But this does...it's bizarre.

As for predictions...I have noted for years that any time conservatives..."conservatives" or the GOP get any sort of cultural traction, the issue of abortion, abortion, abortion must be raised. If not by the D's, the R's are perfectly willing to fall on that sword. I generally don't say these things this boldly out loud but that's my prediction. Abortion from now until Nov. 2022. With some sort of gun violence related to it leading to weapons confiscation. With some extra helpings of squelching free speech. Because you gotta mix these stories up lest people catch on to what you are pulling. If you thought the last 18 months were bad...

Though I suppose there is the possibility that Islamic terrorism and such will knock them off their Narrative.

WTP

I would also throw in, should Biden die, much of the oxygen in the media space will of course be consumed with glorifying her and any criticism whatsoever will be written off to the sexist nature of Teh Patriarchy.

You can provide a photo that contains your face, your ass, and/or any other unsavory thing you want the popo to see. Given that it's the Great Down Under, the popo may show up to beat your ass anyways.

My only issue with the Texas heartbeat law (which I have not read, so my issue may very well be moot) is that an older couple undergoing IVF may have decided to do so while the older rules were in effect. Couples going through that won't throw away a potential baby away unless there's something horrible in their future. (People like to throw out trisomy-21 as the primary reason for IVF couples to abort. Trisomy-18 is much worse, but I know a woman with a Rett Syndrome daughter [that's an X chromosome linked genetic disease; males with that error don't live long at all] who worries about what will happen to that daughter.) I would hope for a short grandfather clause (around 40 weeks, IIRC) to get around that.

OTOH, someone with the ducats to go through IVF might have the remaining ducats to go somewhere else to get a horrible deed done.

Richard Cranium

The woman with the Rett Syndrome daughter had had said daughter while young (mid 20s); I don't think that anyone tested for that whilst she was pregnant. I realize that I've muddled the issue by adding her experience; she certainly did not go through IVF, so any such grandfather clause wouldn't apply in her case.

And that daughter is still alive and she has absolutely no interest in changing that. Still, that daughter has been the focus of her life for 29 years now and she's worried about what will happen to that daughter if she leaves this plane of existence prior to that daughter.

In my case, (you may think the following is bullshit; go ahead) I decided prior to puberty that I wouldn't be banging anyone who I wouldn't want to raise any resulting children; I never wanted to kill my children. Well, my experience tells me that if there is a god, it's Loki.

On the off chance that any of you feel like posting sympathetic messages for my case, please don't. It won't make the guy who looks at me in my dreams with the acidic comment "So, the best thing you could have done to your daughter was kill her before she heard her mother's voice or felt her mother's touch? Yeah, she would have been crying the entire time, but you really don't know why, do you?" go away.

Daniel Ream

We all have our crosses to bear. [ nods to bartender ] Maybe the whiskey will help dull the pain.

On a more cerebral note, it seems to be getting missed that the Texas law isn't supposed to be good law; it's SCOTUS-bait. It was designed to get challenged all the way to SCOTUS because now the right has control of the court, this is its best shot at getting Roe v. Wade overturned.
