Goldfish are capable of navigating on land, Israeli researchers have found, after training fish to drive. The team at Ben-Gurion University developed an FOV - a fish-operated vehicle. The robotic car is fitted with lidar, a remote sensing technology that uses pulsed laser light to collect data on the vehicle's ground location and the fish's whereabouts inside a mounted water tank. A computer, camera, electric motors, and omni-wheels give the fish control of the vehicle.

There's an old dad joke that goes something like:

Of course goldfish can drive. I see them on the road every, speeding and playing the radio too loud and cutting other road-users up.

Just because they don't look like goldfish behind the wheel doesn't mean they don't have the same IQ. Just don't let them into the flying cars when we get them, okay?

I first encountered that feminist slogan, "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle", in my teens. It was one of my first clues that feminism was not nearly as reasonable as its advocates claimed. I see the standard of lectures at Penn State has in no way been compromised.

"A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle": not only a clue that feminism was radical, but that the leaders were lesbians presuming that their personal sexual views were viable and valid for all women.
"trans science"--a nonsense term. Perhaps can be translated as "against science" which would be appropriate. I remember seeing where a college student in South Africa defended native black magic as "equally valid"--sure honey, just take that black magic telephone and use that...

ccscientist

I can try to express myself as a woman whatever that is

When I am at a party and the guys are talking in one corner and the wives in another, there is virtually no overlap in the tone, content, or style of the two conversations. Men and women dream differently, fear different things, have different aspirations, different emotions. Men do not grasp what is up with women most of the time. If a man writes fiction from a woman's point of view, you can usually tell. So how can a man claim he is a woman? Perhaps this is why it looks so fake.

"A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle": not only a clue that feminism was radical, but that the leaders were lesbians presuming that their personal sexual views were viable and valid for all women.

Those lesbians tended to actually hate men, so their assertions about how men should think and behave can be in part explained as attempts to harm men with bad advice.

Furthermore, lesbians saw men as competition and were happy to give them relationship "advice" which would not work.

Ehhhh. As I've mentioned before, a fair bit of Harlequin's library is written by men under various pseudonyms.

My experience has been that with exceptions like Nora Roberts/J.D Robb, it's women who can't write men more than the other way around. There's no female Don Pendleton.

Daniel Ream

This experiment doesn't show what it claims. The fish isn't driving anything. All they've done is connected a camera to the wheels that moves the tank in the vector the fish is swimming. All the fish is doing is swimming towards a large coloured spot. The fish doesn't even know it's in a tank, much less that the tank is moving.

They've proved that fish can be trained to swim to a large coloured spot for food. We already know this. It's how large public aquaria feed their stock.

This stinks of grant grift or else grad students having a laugh.

Governor Squid

When I am at a party and the guys are talking in one corner and the wives in another, there is virtually no overlap in the tone, content, or style of the two conversations.

A few Christmases ago, my Lovely Bride (I'm still digging, honey!) wandered into the room where all of us guys were gathered, holding the newborn great-niece we'd just met for the first time. She spoke gently to the newborn:

"All of the nice ladies in the other room love you a lot, but they're all fucking crazy. They'll tell you to be pretty, but I'll tell you to be clever. They'll tell you to pretend to be somebody else so that people will like you more, but I'll tell you to be yourself and find people who like you for who you are. But if you learn nothing else from me, learn this: you'll have a much better time at these parties if you hang out in here with your Grampa and your uncles, talking about hockey and handguns and hot rods."
In her defense -- that side of the family really is totally fucking mental. And to be honest, us guys were happy to see the newborn and to congratulate the new father without all the saccharine required when one is performing in front of the women.

(Gimme a sec, honey. Still digging!)

Darleen

She spoke gently to the newborn:

I believe I'm in love with your Lovely Bride. I grew up playing with the neighborhood boys and have always had much more interest in hanging out with the menfolk at dinner parties than with the hens (unless they, too, had a tomboy childhood and a dad who told the truth about boys to her).

Jeebuz

When I am at a party and the guys are talking in one corner and the wives in another, there is virtually no overlap in the tone, content, or style of the two conversations.

A few decades ago, I was at a party, and a dozen of us men were gathered outside on the balcony, away from the wimmen. For some reason, the subject of p0rn came up. What followed was an intense discussion on how it perverts perceptions of gender and sexual behavior and agreed the world would be better off if it were banned.

. . .

Now the truth. Nearly every man there expressed enthusiastically specific and detailed opinions about the subject. I admit that I've seen and enjoyed a lot of the stuff over my life, but I thought I was an outlier. Listening to them discuss their preference for Christy Canyon over Kay Parker or how well Carol Cummings performed a certain act, and the general astonishment over Peter North's abilities in general, was an education.

sonny wayz

When Isaac Asimov's daughter was an undergraduate, Isaac visited her and had lunch with her in the cafeteria in her females-only dormitory. That boys were different than girls. That the girl's nature to engage in emotionally manipulative games would, eventually, backfire. He told me for a long term, enduring relationship, I needed to cultivate a direct and honest manner in speaking/dealing with males.

He was also frank about the way men's nature about, and approach to, sex (and how they are visually oriented) and that it would be up to me to set the boundaries -- honestly and with no games.

IOW, I needed to keep my nature under control as much as I expected any boyfriend to control his.

And he said that any boy who could not accept direct honesty from me didn't deserve me no matter how much I "couldn't live without him."

He always answered my questions, showed me how to use basic tools to fix stuff and taught me how to throw a proper punch (while also telling me that boys were going to be stronger so avoid physical fights if possible). The punch came in handy when I had to rock a bully back on his heels, giving me time to run-like-the-wind home. :)

The fish doesn't even know it's in a tank, much less that the tank is moving.

As Saint Exupery said, perfection is attained when there's nothing left to take away - at the end of its evolution, the machine is hidden. Our attention is no longer absorbed by the tool. We forget that the machine is there - it beats like our own heart. Beyond the tool, we find nature again. It is with the air that the pilot is in contact.

Mind you, Exupery's books often end with the plane crashing, so Godspeed to the fish in its pioneer explorations of the oversea world.

I am greatly concerned that all of the roundhouse-kicking-cop-chick media aimed at teenage girls is giving them a surrealistic understanding of their chances in a real fight. There is absolutely a huge increase in female physical aggression generation-over-generation, but how much of it is due to media and how much due to the realization that the men won't hit back I can't discern.

Your father sounds like he knew what he was about. It's almost as if fathers have a crucial role to play in the development of young women.

Again, note the familiar pattern. The selfies, the immaturity, the utter self-involvement. This isn’t the behaviour of a grown woman, a professional educator, but more like that of a thirteen-year-old girl, or a caricature of one. And note the replies from other, supposedly professional educators, albeit in subjects of little repute, and all signalling their “Dr” credentials, letting us know how grown-up and important they are. While indulging in adolescent cooing, or pretend cooing.

But then, this is a man who squees about the prospect of educating teenagers while wearing earrings and a vintage dress, and who declares his need to “live authentically and with abandon,” while acting out a trite, cartoonish fantasy.

It’s a strange game.

Robert Zubrin wrote The Case for Mars (search for it using David's Amazon link) precisely because when Bush I asked NASA to come up with a plan to go to Mars, every department presented their niche as being Absolutely! Critical! to the project, regardless of whether it had anything to do with going to Mars. The result was a $9Bn plan that involved creating a massive space station and orbital factory, building a huge transit vessel in LEO, and building a Moonbase first as "practice".

Zubrin's Mars Direct plan alleges that we could have gone on to Mars in the late 70s, as all the technology strictly needed existed at the time.

pst314

Okay, here's the Dalrymple link:

From the closing paragraphs:

The American psychologist Martin Seligman introduced the notion of learned helplessness as an explanation of mental depression...

I would like to extend this observation to a condition of learned stupidity, that is to say the stupidity of people who are by no means lacking in intelligence but who nevertheless make stupid decisions that people of lesser or even much lesser intelligence can see at once are stupid. Learned stupidity explains how and why highly intelligent people, faced with a choice, repeatedly choose a stupid, if not the most stupid, option, time after time.

In order for people to learn to be stupid in this sense, they must both undergo a prolonged education or training and be obliged to perform acts or carry out procedures that do not engage their intelligence and may even be repugnant to it, while simultaneously being under surveillance for compliance and conformity. Politicians generally fulfill these conditions. They are not alone in this, far from it: A good swathe of the general population also fulfills these conditions. People who are selected for intelligence and then denied the use of it are particularly apt to become stupid.

Politicians are denied, or deny themselves, the use of their intelligence by their need to curry favor, not necessarily of the majority, but of at least the most vocal minorities. It is a human propensity to come to believe what one is obliged, either by self-interest or by virtue of one’s subordination in a hierarchy, to say. That is why, in my professional life, I’ve heard so many intelligent people arguing passionately for the most evident absurdities, with all the appearance of believing in them.

WTP

Slapper - a coarse, promiscuous woman. A slag.

ccscientist

On intelligent people acting stupid: In order to fit in I have seen people say things that are simply impossible, violate time-order of events (claiming B causes A when A preceeds B), or are absurd. Not talking here even about the current political scene where a reporter can say "mostly peaceful" while standing in front of a burning store. A hint that this is happening is when the person believes two contradictory things. For example, the Woke claim that all races are identical, but then clearly implies that blacks are unable to obtain ID to vote or locate a polling place or learn to read. Feminists who claim that men and women are identical, but that women need safe spaces and extra help (oh, and then violate the safe spaces with trans people). Or the "party of science" who also want the origin story of aboriginies taught as equally valid as the big bang and geology. Or as they say "say anything".

pst314

Feminists who claim that men and women are identical, but that women need safe spaces and extra help

See the lowering of American military recruiting standards. All the feminist women I know, without exception, have supported those changes. Among the arguments were that many soldiers, sailors and airmen serve in non-combat roles, that if something is too heavy for a woman to carry then it can be done by two women, that the standards are unnecessarily rigorous, and so on. There really should be consequences for such gross stupidity.

pst314

Zorro is being remade with a female lead:

There are so many true stories of heroines engaged in dangerous activities without this kind of nonsense of "recasting" male heroes as females.

Such women actually exploited their physical limitations as the "weaker sex" and used stealth and cunning.

ccscientist

As Darleen noted, there were women who were spies and did sabotage in Europe WWII--and were executed too.
Women in non-combat roles: in real war, unless you are stationed very far back, your position can get overrun and be in the middle of fighting. I read about a doctor (in Philipines?) whose position was overrun and killed 20 japanese before being killed. In spite of being not front line. In the Iraq war supply convoys with women drivers were ambushed. But feminists want women to be in combat roles, even though they can't carry the full load of equipment, can't carry a mortar, can't load a howitzer, and can't carry out someone wounded. When I was younger I could throw a guy over my shoulders and carry him just as a joke. These deficits will (are already) get people killed in combat.

Darleen

women to be in combat roles, even though they can't carry the full load of equipment

Women can do certain combat roles ... sniper, pilot ... roles where brute strength is not *the* key quality. If a woman cannot meet the physical standards of X position, the worse thing to do is to lower the standards. The military is not (or should not) be about anything other than fielding the best individuals for the mission of breaking the enemy. Women are not men and just can't project that physical strength and intimidation factor.

This is why too many single women lose all influence over their teen sons and why boys need strong, functional dads in the home.

Women need to lean into their strengths rather than crying that they can't be Brucelina Lee.
