The Reality of the Lizard People: By coincidence* Sarah Hoyt at Instapundit just posted a link to an essay by Eric S Raymond which discusses the problem using an sf trope.

* Not really a coincidence, because so many of our current problems are due to our foolish tolerance of lizard people.

It did indeed. And bless you, sir. May your sparkling water retain its gaseousness.

And one more time: Thanks to all who’ve chipped in, or subscribed, or done shopping via the Amazon links, including all those much too shy to say hello. It’s much appreciated and is what keeps this place here.

Cultural buffet that it is.

Given the quality of "female" talent seen so far on the thread, maybe that's not such an exciting idea.

I am currently being forced to take the Federally Mandated(tm) trainings on Sexual Harrassment Prevention, Diversity and Inclusion, and of course, Bad Whitey, I mean - Microaggressions and Implicit Bias. Luckily I am able to take these at my computer, alone.

So far I have had the videos going in the background, muted, while I'm trying to calculate cable lengths for my sensors. Diversity and Inclusion I passed with flying colors the first time on complete guessing, based on what I've seen and read here. Surprisingly, the only wrong answer I gave was "If someone alerts you that you've committed a microaggression, use it as a learning experience." I don't know what the correct answer was, but I am willing to bet it was "members of (?) groups may not want to constantly educate you on diversity etc" or something like that, which has been a theme here, and I should have known that one.

The first section of Implicit Bias was titled "The science behind implicit bias", so I guess that old study is getting trotted out again. Interestingly, the exam for the Implicit Bias course asked mostly questions about explicit bias. So I am retaking for the pass.

I have to say this here fine establishment has helped me get through this without having to listen to or read any of it. So "ping", good sir, and thankye.

Federally mandated only for government workers? Or also for all employees of private companies doing work for the government?

Depends on how badly your CEO wants to kiss DIE ass.

As an researcher at a state university, I guess I am technically a state government employee, but the university president was a boot licking bandwagon jumper who couldn't get enough of that Biden love. So anything that came off Brandon's pen was immediately adopted here, even though we have state statutes that overwrite some of the federal mandates. Because the U takes federal $$ (who doesn't anymore) the U prez deemed everyone here a federal contractor.

It's the same thing the airlines did for the mask crap - "oh WE don't want to make you wear a mask, but we have no choice because it's federally mandated." I so loathe those two words. And our fine state legislature did deal with some of the DIE crap in higher ed, but weaseled out by saying "unless federally mandated". So I was getting nastygrams from the 6-figure salary DIE admins that the deadline is fast approaching and I still haven't done my Federally Mandated training. I'm lucky I didn't have to sit through it in person.

I do wonder because I know people working for companies that have government contracts, but I rarely ask about such things. What's more, I wouldn't necessarily trust all of them to give honest answers.

ComputerLabRat

companies that have government contracts

In that case, it's almost certain the company is held hostage by the current administration. If you want that sweet, sweet government money, bend over! There are a lot of strings attached to federal money these days, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if everyone at the company from the top down to the janitor is considered a "federal contractor" for the purposes of submitting to whatever federal whim is mandated today.

Bless you. May your cupboard always contain Henderson’s Relish.

It’s sort-of summed up by the cameos, in which famous characters appear, but almost nothing is made of them. One cameo in particular could have been made special, a real crowd pleaser, but instead it feels throwaway, even perverse, a wasted opportunity.

So. Much. That.

David

So. Much. That.

Well, if you’re going to introduce that character, one of some importance to the Marvel project, and to the company’s history - and one of the most requested characters for big screen treatment - you’d think they’d get it right and make it a special moment, a promise of things to come. But instead, it’s glib and trivial, and poorly written, and the effect is decidedly underwhelming, of feeling cheated.

[ Added: ]

And so, instead of being one of the smartest characters in the Marvel universe, said character is made to do something foolish, and is consequently short-lived, in order to give the screen time to much less interesting - and much less liked - characters who fit the woke narrative on account of their sex and skin colour.

And as Marvel is now so busy lecturing us about “diversity” and “representation,” and fretting ostentatiously about “cultural appropriation,” and hiring writers and department heads who tell us that they don’t want to depict “white men” in positions of importance, it seems the studio can no longer be relied on to get the basics right.
