I don't follow UK politics all that carefully, but for some years I've been getting the impression that the SNP has strong fascist tendencies. Maybe the above link should amend that to strong schizo fascist tendencies.

Marvel’s bed-shitting

In a slightly longer clip of the same scene, her diatribe ends with her turning green, then bursting out into She-Hulk form, which suggests that at some point during the production process that monologue was intended to be a set-up for an ironic pay-off.

But it goes on so long that it comes across more as the director had dozed off during the scene, only to be poked with a stick to be reminded it was supposed to be a comedy.

David

I think this might be an example of what they call “reaching”..

Oh dear.

It’s possible, I suppose, that the series overall won’t be quite as bad as it looks, but the clip above isn’t good writing. And yet it’s clearly presented as if it were. Other clips I’ve seen - also selected by the studio - were likewise underwhelming. I should point out I haven’t watched the thing - because the trailers, interviews, etc., gave me no reason to do so. I think the shift from ‘don’t care’ to ‘firm no’ when was when the writer and director were being asked about the rushed and shoddy CGI - and their response was to complain about sexism and how men objectify women’s bodies, or something to that effect.

TimT

I think this might be an example of what they call “reaching”..

Nikw211

It is rather like a regurgitated ideological furball.

As we like to say round these here parts, that.

Having left two comments on She Hulk already, a certain kind of person might be forgiven for assuming I'm exactly the kind of man-child incel type currently being blamed for it's less than smooth reaction.

But I couldn't care less about that - I've seen, maybe just 5 or 6 of what must be 50-odd movies and TV series Marvel has been pumping out and what have seen has left me cold.

Product placement, Starbucks in You've Got Mail or Pepsi in Back to the Future and many other examples that can be no doubt cited, is deeply cringeworthy, and draws attention to the fact that you're seeing a film rather than experiencing a story.

Even when it's done ironically, it's still annoying because you know it's only there because it has to be there and it's still throwing you back into the world you're trying to escape from by watching the bloody thing in the first place (I think it's one reason why historical dramas of the recent past are often able to pull it off successfully - they can legitimately be showing you what a Cola bottle or a Hershey bar used to look like as part of the setting or story while actually shilling for the brand).

That scene is product placement except with politics in place of Pepsi.

Lancastrian Oik

"Philadelphia Orchestra", explains a lot right there.

Ah- an oxymoron perhaps? Along with Oldham Athletic, Vauxhall Frontera Sport, Microsoft Works and (my favourite, this) "elegant combover".

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Ah- an oxymoron perhaps?

Not that so much as a hotbed of "progressive" pandemic paranoids.

David

it’s still throwing you back into the world you’re trying to escape from by watching the bloody thing in the first place… That scene is product placement except with politics in place of Pepsi.

Heh. That. I used to enjoy watching Marvel movies, most of them, for two hours of expensive-looking escapist confection. Sometimes they faded from memory on the way back to the car, but they were generally entertaining while they happened. And some were very good.

But we’ve gone from forgiving an occasional misfire to an expectation that whatever comes next will also be poorly written, misjudged, and littered with the tiresome preoccupations of its leftist writers – preoccupations that alienate half the audience and disrupt any suspension of disbelief - and will therefore be aggravating shite, just like the last three things.

Thing is, Marvel will have quite detailed feedback on, say, its streaming projects and will know exactly when, and therefore why, viewers tuned out. (The clunky sermonising and gratuitous race-baiting in Falcon and the Winter Soldier comes to mind.) And yet, they’ve persisted in making the same mistakes. As if the problem must be the audience, not the writers and their assumptions.

Farnsworth M Muldoon

Yet another unique shopping experience.

Men in women's sports: advocates for trans in sports ignore how big the strength difference is. Men's upper body strength is way more. For hand grip strength, I saw data showing that the curves with age for men and women do not even overlap--that is a 65 yr old has less grip strength than when younger but still more than any woman of any age. For punching and throwing, also no overlap. Men have stronger bones and can take a hit. I have tripped and fallen my share of times but never got hurt. Not once. Women slip on the stairs and break their ankle. It is "unfair" but reality is unfair.

Runcie Balspune

The car crashes were intresting in that the supercars are designed for downforce and so start nosediving when there's no road to stop them going down, good modelling technique in that game, I've had my eye on it for a while, might get it now.

Surely the She Hulk clip is actually funny because she complains about someone "mansplaining" her area of expertise when in fact that's exactly what she's doing to Hulk?

What do the following have in common: fat pride, pedo pride, trans pride, eliminating valedictorians, removing derogatory terms for criminals? It is that because a priority is that no one feel bad about themselves or their choices, we must remove all standards and the very concept of shame (oh, except that whites and men should feel shame).

Sam Duncan

pst314: “I don't follow UK politics all that carefully, but for some years I've been getting the impression that the SNP has strong fascist tendencies.”

Well, it was founded in 1936. As I always say, who might have thought a nationalist party would be a good idea in 1936? And, indeed, one of their founders was interred during the war for sympathising with the enemy. Oh, they try to distance themselves from their history now – how much they really mean it is debatable, but Sturgeon's on record as saying that if she was starting from scratch, she wouldn't even have “National” in the name of the party – and it convinces many (myself, as I said, included at one time), but it's hard to excise the soul of any political organisation. Just look at the Democrats: their racism may take a different form today (and they may, honestly, be genuine in their abhorrence of the form it used to take), but it hasn't gone away.

I should have listened to my gran. She always said they reminded her of the Nazis.

For those not following the other news, Warner and Discovery have merged, the new CEO fired the female CEO of Warner and did not replace her, and pretty much everything DC is getting cancelled. The CW is getting sold, DC comics is getting sold, every movie except The Flash and Black Adam are gone (and those two are iffy). This is not unsurprising given the new CEO's ruthless focus on cost-cutting and profitability. I think the "he hates woke" reaction is overblown; even the "good" DC properties have failed commercially.

Steven Crowder once set up an arm-wrestling match between one of his female co-hosts, Courtney, who did cross-fit and strength training, and his weedy, noodle-armed producer Not Gay Jared[1] who looked like a typical endomorphic millennial.

Wasn't even close. Jared wasn't even trying. The only way Courtney got anywhere was bracing her leg against the table and using both arms, which surprised Jared enough he lost ground, but he put actual effort in and forced her back upright.

Marvel: take the greatest money-making machine in world history, and sacrifice it on the alter of woke. Sounds like a sound business decision. Blame Disney. They started this before they acquired Marvel by screwing up the other biggest money maker: Star Wars. For example, the female jedi does not need to learn her craft, or struggle, or make mistakes, like Luke did. She just is suddenly powerful and skilled. FFS. The black guy who escapes the clone is supposed to be a clone of that bounty hunter--so the bad guys in white armor are all black? How....uplifting.

For marvel, the rot started with Captain Marvel, who is suddenly the most powerful superhero but seems unable to confront Thanos. ugh. Her back-story is lame. I've quit watching either.

Given that Marvel all started as comics, I loved most of the movies: Thor, Xmen, avengers series. It was all held together by Stan Lee who had a wonderful sense of story and humor. When Stan died, it was all downhill for the franchise. It was made worse by the woke fanatics at Disney. The insistence by radical fems that we still live in The Handmaids tale is so nuts. 60% of US college students are female. They dominate med school and all the medical fields. Single young women in cities make more than single men. 98% of workplace fatalities are men. But we are going to tell small boys in school that they are oppressors?

Quite an unusual one in Blighty, I'd venture to say. Most of us read the Beano. I'm fairly sure I didn't even realise that Spider-Man was a comic-book character at the time.

Twerking on Tiptoes.

Well, I didn't see any twerking. I don't particularly care about ballet, but I'll opine that those women weren't doing classical ballet moves. They were, however, doing something that required a bit of training. I've never even attempted to stand on my toes as they (or any ballet dancer) have, so I'm loath to throw shit at someone who is able to do something that I would find extremely difficult to do.

Should what they are doing be considered as classical ballet? Probably not.

Should what they are doing be considered as a new potential art form? Probably. You make new shit by combining bits of old shit together.

Would I watch that new art form? It's even less likely that I would watch that since I have negative interest in watching classical ballet.

YMMV.
